500GB Game Code Bundle is Worth It

Installation for the 500GB SSD was easy and didn’t take me long to install in my desktop. My motherboard had the right specs so no other modification was needed on my machine. Note that no screws were included in the package for the install. For reference, I am a beginner level nerd. As a precaution I always like to back up my files just in case something goes wrong, in this case I had no problems after installation. My machine continues to run smooth; it didn’t crash at any time. Load time was super-fast most games loaded under 10 seconds, which is a considerable improvement. The game was what I expected modern weapon gameplay. For the price point and the performance, it is worth purchasing in my opinion. I was considering Samsung but opted to give this one a try to stay within my budget and the fact that the Battlefield game was included.

I bought this new SN750 NVMe drive to move my OS from a Crucial SSD. This drive is noticeably faster. Installation was easy, but I did have trouble cloning my OS to this drive without corruption errors. I ended up backing up my pertinent files and fresh installing windows. Since the motherboard or CPU didn't change, Windows recognized my computer and I did not need to repurchase the OS. That being said and really at no fault to the drive, everything else has gone smoothly. PROS: - The drive is fast: The box says read/writes up to 3400MB/s sequentially. However I've found mine, without any cache enhancements, to be about 2900MB/s. Still very fast. With RAM caching of 4GB (which is what I typically use), read/writes came in about 8000MB/s. However I've found mine, without any cache enhancements, to be about 2900MB/s. Still very fast. With RAM caching of 4GB (which is what I typically use), read/writes came in about 8000MB/s. See the attached benchmark images for no enhancement runs and with enhancement runs. For reference, with caching my Crucial SSD where the OS used to be would average about 800MB/s. - Temps are solid: My motherboard included a m.2 heatsink which I am using for this. The m.2 slot on my board for the NVMe primary slot is right under the graphics card. So, when that starts putting out some heat, this thing will heat up a little as well. Even with that temperatures are in very respectable ranges. After running my benchmarks for the drive, the average was 41C and hottest was 44C, as seen in the image. After a gaming session, the peak temperature I've seen for the drive was 55C, but typically stays under 48C. - Price: The prices for 3D NAND drives have been coming down and probably will continue to do so. Last year at this time, a 500GB drive was about $250. I picked this one up for $120. These will probably come down some more from there. All good news for us consumers. CONS: My only con would be the issues I had with cloning the drive, most of which are not really related to this drive, but more related to the cloning software and my OS. My final thoughts on this are: this drive performs very close to the Samsung 970 Plus drive. They are also about the same price. The Samsung and this are about the fastest drives you can buy at this price-point and are essentially interchangeable. The SN750 is vastly superior to an SSD, and the differences are noticeable in everyday use. WD products in my experience have been reliable with no drive failing for me in the past. So to anyone looking to get this, I would recommend.

30 September 2022

Pros: Faster than it would appear to be from the headline read/write specs. Throughput is decent enough for large file transfers (a rare occurrence for me), but where it really shines is for deep queue micro transactions/operations (important for gaming/Windows platform) where it stomps all over my older Force MP510! Obviously there are better drives in 2022 for gaming, but for the low price it is excellent performance for your money against the cost of something like an SN850. With the free game code thrown in it is even better value.Cons: Doesn't seem to dispense chocolate milk or popcorn, other than that it's fine!

Got back into pc gaming a month ago and started out simple with an HP omen. (Best Buy was running a great deal) Only issue I ran into right off the bat was the 256 GB SSD it came with. Filled that with 4 games. Did a bunch of research and picked this up knowing I will be building a full rig after next gen graphics drop. Everything is great now that it's up and running. I did have issues with cloning the old SSD because as I found out HP was not as upgrade friendly when it comes to the SSD. I've been away from PC building for 5 years so I know my knowledge isn't all there with the new tech but I ended up having to use two different apps to clone the way I wanted. From what I gathered on the forums HP may not like people cloning their OEM drives out of their PC's. In the end I paid for Acronis but it wouldn't clone the drive so I used Macrium (free) to clone the drive then swapped back to Acronis to deal with the partitions because for whatever reason neither would do both. Even with the learn on the fly approach I was able to get everything done in about a half hour with the clone process itself being 15 mins. I picked up the Asus Arion for the enclosure which I know was over kill but Im using the old SSD as a flash drive and like the enclosure. Ran ATTO and went from 144MBs write 722MBs read old drive to 2.8 GB/s write 3.2 GB/s read on this. I'm still in awe as I compare this to my old Sata SSDs in Raid and barely hitting 800MBs read...

Installation was easy, simply install the drive in the m.2 slot, and secure it with the screw that's included. The [up to] read/write speeds of 3470MB/s are as advertised, I average around 3400MB/s for the read speed, and 2500MB/s for the write speed when benchmarking with CrystalDiskMark. It would of been a nice gesture to add the heatsink by default, although the temperatures are average for an NVMe m.2 SSD. Using the drive as my OS drive the idle temp is ~37c in my mid tower sized case with gaming mode enabled on the Western Digital dashboard. There's no extra bells and whistles, or anything that would make you say "wow" but I can't come up with any valid unique reasons to not purchase this SSD.

Pros: ITs a Gen 4 drive with a free game so whats not to like when getting it on special offer.Solid performance, OS starts in a blink and fucntions perfectly I have installed a large MMo on it and load times are impressive . I have the SN850 as a gaming drive with other similar games and its hard to notice much if any difference in screen load times and game performance.Cons: All good , though 500gb does fill quickly if your storing large games and media the 1TB is probably a safer option though as a primary OS holder with extra admin space the 500GB performs excellent and as a Gen 4 is fast for those operations.

Good news first I haven't gamed with it yet but as for booting times and overall quickness I give it 4 thumbs up. My boot time has gone from 5min to about 30 seconds. Opening basic programs like discord and steam has gone from slow motion to fast forward. I can comfortably call myself an idiot for not getting an ssd as soon as they were available. Now here is where my novice skills came in. At first I could not get windows to install on this, windows registered the ssd but my mobo bios did not. So after trial and me only assuming driver and bios version issues I had to contact a friend. My assumptions were right and the bios was out of date so we flashed it and boom the ssd registered on all fronts and install was a breeze. So if you have my mobo gigabyte sold this backwards. They made the M.2 Pcie ssd technology available but did't make the mobo able to utilize it right away. It looks like it took 4 versions of the bios until the ssd could be read which really confused us and is kind of backwards, so thanks gigabyte... not wd's fault. So with this said, this thing is super fast for my build and I'm absolutely in love. Can'y wsit to see the load time on high demand games. BUY IT!

Works as expected

Bought a 1tb version to replace my 250 gig nvme and certainly does what I expect. The software is a nice touch, making updating the firmware easy albeit the software isn't much to look at and could use a GUI overhaul. I opted for the heatsink, for the added cost I don't mind the look. I can't really say that the heatink helps all that much, previous nvme ran around 38-40 degrees c without a heatsink under load and with heatsink this one run 32-36. This is mostly dependant on other factors though like position of it on motherboard and airflow of case etc. So keep that in mind. I have yet to have any issues and will certainly be investing in other WD Black products in the future. If you buy this I think you'd be satisfied with the product.
