I have a Lorex NVR for recording security footage. After just a few months the included HHD in the unit died without warning. It was a complete crash. The device was under warranty and the company would not replace the drive, but rather said they would replace the entire unit with a used/refurbished unit and that it would takes weeks. I decided to keep the device and just replace the drive myself so I wasn't without a security system for that long. This drive was on sale and is more than twice the capacity of the other brand of drive it replaced. It is extremely fast when searching for past security footage. If you are looking to replace a security system drive be sure to get one that is properly rated for this task. You can't just use any off the shelf hard drive ... I actually bought this for my home security camera NVR system, after I advised a friend to buy the exact same thing for their same system and I would install it, as the existing HDD was not large enough for continuous storage beyond several days. It works great, was easy to install, came packaged very well, and the price was very reasonable. The only complaint that I have is that the drive has a very audible "click" to it as it reads and writes, which normally would not be an issue for me or my friend, but we both have the NVR systems in our office, and when it is quiet it can be a little maddening to just hear the clicking of the hard drive. I'm starting to get used to it, otherwise, and do love the fact that it has much more storage capabilities for the ... I have not seen any signs of failure, or degradation, and knowing that my HDD as well as the same one for my friend are the same item and have the same noise "issue", it puts my mind at ease thinking it is likely supposed to be that way. This could also just be a common item with surveillance system HDDs, I haven't had anything other than an SSD in quite some time, so maybe I am spoiled!

Don't have any strong complaints about the drive itself. It has worked well as do most WD products. Warranty support though is terrible. The drive died (which drives sometimes do) and I relied on the WD warranty to replace the failed drive since it was still under warranty. After days of back and forth "The drive makes scraping noise when you power it up." "Well have you checked the cable?" and so on they FINALLY decided that the drive needed to be replaced. That started on 5/1. It is now 5/23 and I finally have confirmation that the replacement has been shipped and should be here by 5/29. An entire month to replace a failed drive under warranty!!! As a comparison I recently did the same thing with a used drive I got from a company that recycle used servers. The ... MoreDon't have any strong complaints about the drive itself. Only a 2 yr warranty be replacement within 4 days as compared to a MONTH for WD.

My camera system has been slowly going downhill for years now. Finally one day it decided to stop recording. And of course, the day we went on vacation!!I got home, pulled the old segate hard drive to to some tests in windows, but i didn't have any issues?!Me fearing the worst, that it was time to upgrade to that 2 thousand dollar system that has caught my eye for some time now... lolI decided one last attempt to fix it.A new hard drive.Installed it w/o any issue, fired up, prepped the hard drive, and i was back in business! The cameras work better than ever. Before i would have the cameras randomly missing things that they should have gotten, and now things are working flawlessly.I'm thinking moving forward, I'm doing a replacement proactively every ... So Western digital representatives have told me over and over their video drives are great because of their endurance features. And while I'm sure those are fine, they are blurring the lines in the homes you don't notice they aren't really video hards drives, because they don't support the ata-8 standards. They do respond to the ata-8 read requests, but when the drive starts to have read errors, rather than obey ata-8 and deliver the stream with a time priority, they stall the stream as they retry error correction over and over. The ATA-8 Streaming command set is designed so a host system to request data within a specific window of time. It places a priority on a time to transfer the data, rather than the integrity of the data. This is important for video drives in ... This is important for video drives in DVR's.Other manufacturers combine video and surveillance features, and the drives are good in DVR's OR NVR's. However western digital will tell you that your equipment isn't compatible with the drive. Seagate, HGST and Samsung all make video drives that properly implement the ATA-8 standard. By insisting to me that this is a video hard drive, rather than admitting it really isn't, is wasting all of our time and money.I purchased the 8tb drive on April 16th, 2020. It has a Feb 16 2020 manufacturing date. It started freezing the DVR within a month, and on June 28th the DVR just started rebooting every hour or so. It is 20% full, haven't had it long enough to ever fill it with data. The house is between 68 and 72 at all times, and the fan of the DVR has direct access to room temperature air. The drive runs warm, but Western Digital's rep just got finished telling me how good this drive is in hot environments, and that it has no limits to how much heat it can handle.I asked the rep if this was an actual video drive, and before I finished explaining what I meant by that, he launched into a memorized sales-pitch where phrases like "withstanding unlimited heat", and emphasized the durability of the drive. It is very clear that they spend a lot of time defending the purple drives, and are very good at extolling their virtues. I have no doubt everything he said was true, I know and trust WD hard drives, in my day job I build massive SAN systems entirely based on WD hard drives. I love the brand, but their video drives are for surveillance and normal data use ONLY. They are not good for your directv video DVR. They are NOT ata-8 compliant video hard drives. They only work in video DVR's when the drive is running perfectly. As soon as it starts to generate late video frames due to error correction, DVR's that require ATA-8 behavior will start locking up and/or crashing.I love western digital drives in general, but their surveillance drives are awful in DVR systems.
This drive from Western Digital was one of the few to show up in my research, that provided the feature and design points I was seeking.Offering a durable lifespan, with the concept that it's under 24/7 use of writing, it's more than satisfactory for a local home installation of cameras. The large 4TB Capacity also ensures high quality or multiple camera feeds will be stored far longer before being overwritten or requiring deletion.Utilising a common SATA interface and CMR recording, your speeds are not harmed or limited in capacity for the hardware while maintaining good compatibility with past and present hardware. The notable 256MB Cache also helps accelerate the workload and keep a sizable buffer for incoming streams. It's also shockingly quiet while under ... There are also accelerometers to help the drive predict and counter any vibrations or movements that'd otherwise throw the head off track, ensuring a more consistent performance.
Tried several hard drives TiVo couldn't format any, keep getting all lights flashing. Finally ordered WD purple 1TB and 2tb. TiVo could not format 2tb but formatted 1TB. After formatting and play the drive was very loud, but after 2 days it became very quite. Everything seems to be working perfect. I tried the WD green drives which are scrubbed clean but stopped working 90 days from purchase. Amazon refunded price. Tried a WD green 1TB. TiVo would not format. Research on drives had all kinds of answer for why these drives didn't work. The used ones had to be scrubbed completely clean for TiVo to format. Some drives come with an automatic shut off and TiVo can't handle this(PISH?). Each of the drives I tried were recommended drives. My only recommendation is just ... Review Update 8/27/2023:Hands down Western Digital 4TB Purple Hard Drive is better than Seagate's 4TB Surveillance hard drive and I WILL NOT EVER BUY SEAGATE AGAIN. Western Digital is so dang quiet and you do not even hear it running. Western Digital download rate is 4X faster than Seagate.Review Update 8/21/2023:AWESOME Hard drive. Hands down better than Seagate's Surveillance hard drive. I have to give Western Digital 99 out of a 100 stars (Minus 1 star for packaging), but overall the best hard drive purchase ever on Amazon.Spend more money for Western Digital hard drives and do not waste your time, energy, thought, or money on anything from Seagate. Will update my review once I receive the Western Digital 4TB Purple Surveillance HDD1. Making sure it's delivered in the proper WD boxing2. Make sure there is a 3 year warranty3. Make sure I did not receive the clearance WD Purple 4TB HDD (clearance WD42PURZ)4. Make sure it is not a refurbished HDDIf the HDD is delivered in anything else besides the WD or doesn't have a 3 year warranty or I receive the clearance HDD, or it's refurbished, I will return the HDD in a heart beat.Major issues with ordering Sea gate HDD's from Amazon and hopefully not the same with WD.
I installed it on my NVR which accepts up to 2 6tb HDDs. This is my second. I have been buying this brand for years (more than 10) for my cameras monitoring systems and the truth is that so far they have not failed me. I have 2 2TB HDDs of this brand and the only reason why I bought 2 new HDDs was to increase the capacity since I recently updated my camera system that now has 4K resolution. So my two 2TB HDDs were enough for around 2 weeks of recording and I like to have at least 1 month. With 2 6TB HDDs I estimate that I will have around 45 days of recording.
My first HDD was a Seagate 1-TB that came with my Hiseeu NVR. The Seagate lasted just over 1-year and Hiseeu would not replace the HDD unless I gave them a 5-Star review which I was not going to do just to get a free Seagate 1-TB HDD. Plus I would never give a 5-Star review on a junk system that I was sold so instead, I bought this Western Digital 3TB not knowing if it would work but once I installed it, it did work right away without even formatting it. I still did format it eventhough it worked as soon as I plugged into my SATA/ power cables. This product does work. It is easy to install. It's easy to format and it was delivered the next day after ordered. I highly recommend this product for your surveillance camera system. It also has a lot more storage than the ... It also has a lot more storage than the 1-TB that comes with the Hiseeu system. This HDD is quiet and I cannot here it at all. It has only been installed for about 48- hours so time will tell how long it will actually last but as of now I am very impressed overall. If something goes wrong with it over time I will update my review but for now 5-Stars.
