Essentials Middle Bacon Rashers. I tend to purchase shortcut bacon but, with this being out of stock, I picked up this 1kg pack of Woolworths Essentials Middle Bacon Rashers. At $10. 00/kg is is a good price but I don't believe it is Australian pork? It tasted very nice when fried and adorning scrambled eggs on toast. Made in Australia from only 18% locally sourced ingredients (hence the deduction of a star). It does comprise of 90% Pork but also contains Salt, Mineral Salts (451, 450), Sugar, Antioxidant (316) and Preservative (250) - hard to find any packaged bacon without these unfortunately!

Was just ok! Love love love my Bacon, so for $9. 00 for 1kg I happily put this in my trolley to purchase. This bacon is packed in Australia, but only uses at least 18% Aussie ingredients. So that's a massive let down. I really struggled to open this, thought there would have been as easy peel tab on packet. For the life of me, could not locate one. Mr B tried as well, he couldn't see one either so I opened pack with a knife. The pack had quite a bit of liquid come out of it, so thought bacon might have been pumped with a bit of water. Put bacon on a plate, really did think slices would have been folded. (like when you get it from the deli) But I didn't find this, it was all sort of twisted together, which made it hard to achieve full slices. Used for an Egg and ... MoreWas just ok! Used for an Egg and Bacon lunch, Pumpkin Soup and in a Frittata. Cut rind off plus fat, fried off that's when you can really see the water come out. Once the water evaporates, the bacon starts to cook and you end up with crispy bacon. Found it perfectly salted, when I cook with bacon I tend to not add in a lot of salt. As the bacon makes up for this. It is I suppose Budget Bacon, and will be great for large families. Bacon is a bit of a treat for us, there's mostly just the two of us. And I never buy a huge amount, so will stick to other bacon products. Woolworths Shortcut Australian Bacon 200g is 95% Aussie $5. 50. Bertocchi Gold Long Rindless Bacon 400g 98% Aussie $8. 50. Bertocchi Gold Short Rindless Bacon 400g 98% Aussie $8. 50. If this was more Australian bacon like the 3 above, I would buy. But will not be purchasing this again.

Convenient bacon. While I prefer to buy bacon from the deli, this is a handy option. It goes well in different dishes, cooked on the bbq, with pancakes and maple syrup and anything else you normally use bacon for. It lasts well in the fridge and frozen. Resealable bag would be handy but it works well with other methods. One question I have is regarding the origin of the ingredients, 18% Australian product. Would love to know where the pork is from.

Great for the Budget. Bacon is a much-used ingredient in our house, although I usually purchase the short-cut variety. This product was a little challenging to find as it was hidden away in a corner of the refrigerated section, near the other small good products. The change in packaging also threw me off, although I have to say that I like this new design much better than the one shown on the Bunch site. The see-through portion allows you to inspect the product you are purchasing. Upon opening the package (which required a pair of scissors), large rashers of bacon greeted me. I decided to use the first portion of this sample in an easy Sunday night dinner – my bacon, cheese and tomato scrambled eggs. There was a reasonable amount of rind and fat on each rasher, which I trimmed away. This still left me with good-sized pieces of bacon but I also felt that I wasn’t getting value for money with this product, when I was trimming so much away. The bacon crisped up nicely in a hot frying pan and was delicious in our scrambled eggs. The promised hint of smokiness was detectable but I would have been even happier if this had been even more pronounced. Even though I used 5 rashers in this meal, I was still left with an impressively large amount of bacon that I portioned up and froze. Made in Australia from a paltry 21% Australian ingredients. Why can we not support local farmers? No artificial colours or flavours. Gluten free. At $9. 00 for 1 kilogram of bacon, this is a product that would be welcomed by those on a tight household budget. For myself and my family, I will continue to buy the short-cut version (and, when I can afford it, an Australian-farmed product at that).

Budget bacon! Thank you for my tasty bacon sample, Woolies. I'm a massive bacon fan. It took me a considerable length of time to find this product, because the packaging had been updated. I actually walked past this product a couple of times, and decided to go back and grab a packet to test if it would scan as a free item. Success, my test worked!@gwenbunchteam, if possible, please change the pictures of this product displayed on bunch - thank you. The plastic wrapping was easy enough to open with a knife, but as you're unlikely to use up the entire kilo of bacon in one go, it would be better if two separate 500g resealable tubs were used. When consumed on its own, I found this bacon a little too salty in taste, but it cooked to a delicious and beautiful crisp, and was perfect when combined with other ingredients. The bacon had a very slight smokey flavour, but I would've been happier with a lot more smokiness. We enjoyed this budget bacon in a beautiful boscaiola pasta dish, as well as in an egg & bacon sandwich, and also in a yummy Caesar salad. We love the versatility of this product - a lot! These rashers would be great in pizza, potato salad, croissants, quiche, frittata, omelettes, scrambled eggs, savoury muffins, or even in soup... This product is made in Australia, but it was disappointing to discover that the proportion of local ingredients is a very low 18%. My sample wasn't too fatty. Fat gives this bacon lots of flavour, but I had to trim the rind off this this product at times. I actually prefer shortcut rindless bacon as it is quick and a lot more convenient to use. I will buy this product occasionally, especially when feeding large crowds, but for everyday use, I'll probably stick to a more expensive leading brand. The competition uses Australian bacon. As a consumer, it makes me happy to be able to support the struggling Aussie farmer. This is a budget bacon with a very economical price of only $9. 00 per kilo. It offers the savvy shopper unbeatable value. Give this bacon a go. You'll enjoy the lovely flavour and budget friendly price.
Where is the Aussie pork? Goodness, where to start with this one?I suppose I should start by saying that Hubby, Miss Preschooler, Miss Toddler and I actually have our own free-range sows and boar, and we grow our piglets out for meat. This includes making our own ham and bacon, so we know what it's like to eat homegrown pork that has had a happy and healthy life (muddy wallows, green pasture, kitchen/ garden scraps, and so many rubs and pats that they squeal in delight everytime we're spotted outside!)So, the Essentials bacon was a huge dissapointment (sorry Woolies, I usually love your products, but this review is brutally honest). I realise that commercially produced pork products will never taste/ look the same as homegrown, but I just felt this product was ... MoreWhere is the Aussie pork? This includes making our own ham and bacon, so we know what it's like to eat homegrown pork that has had a happy and healthy life (muddy wallows, green pasture, kitchen/ garden scraps, and so many rubs and pats that they squeal in delight everytime we're spotted outside!)So, the Essentials bacon was a huge dissapointment (sorry Woolies, I usually love your products, but this review is brutally honest). I realise that commercially produced pork products will never taste/ look the same as homegrown, but I just felt this product was barely even fit to eat. Firstly, I took two stars off because this product is actually not even Australian pork (and there is no indication of what country the meat comes from... is it Indonesia, China... who knows?) This is a major issue for me, as our country has some of the cleanest (as in disease-free) pigs in the world due to basic health/ hygiene practices. Secondly, another star came off because the bacon was so watery (as in, been injected so much) that the juices leaked all over the kitchen bench when I opened the packet. This in itself isn't a huge drama, but once the product was cooked the bacon shrunk to half the original size due to water loss. 50% loss of product = $9 per 500g (or $18/Kg, AKA pretty pricey for supermarket brand)... just some food for thought. Thirdly, I had to take another star off because the bacon stuck together after it was frozen and fully defrosted (I'm thinking this is due to how watery it is, but somebody correct me if I'm wrong). This leaves one star, which I felt the product deserved as it was easy to find on the shelf, the packaging was simple to open, and it contains 'some' Australian ingredients. One final note, Hubby actually thought the bacon tasted okay for packet stuff, not too different in flavour from branded bacon. Overall, I would love for this product to be sourced from Australia, even if it was slightly more expensive, as long as it wasn't so watery (so you actually ended up with more meat for your buck). I would then seriously consider buying it when we ran out of our own bacon!
Good bacon overall. I rated this bacon three stars which, I believe, is still good. The bacon itself costs around $9 for a 1kg pack and can be found in the fridge section of your local Woolworths beside all of the other bacon products. I found the product quite easily and there were four packs left for me to choose from. I don’t particularly like lots of fat on bacon, so this is part of the reason for my three star review - there was a lot of fat on all of the packets of bacon that were in the fridge! I wouldn’t mind this if I was making something like carbonara, but, personally, I do not enjoy lots of fat on bacon and I don’t like paying for something (fat) that I am about to throw in the bin. Anyway, I chose the bacon pack that had the least amount of fat as I wanted to try this out as a breakfast meal of bacon and eggs, just so that I could give a full opinion for this review of flavour, how it cooked etc. I went home, cut off as much fat as I could and put the bacon on the grill. It cooked easily and quickly and crisped up quite well. It went nicely with my scrambled eggs (and a cheeky little pancake on the side). I would consider myself to be a bacon conisuer and with that in mind, it didn’t taste as smoked as I would like from a ‘smoked bacon’, hence the three star review again. That said, it was enjoyable overall for the price per kg and I would likely buy it again, particularly for carbonara, but to also have as part of my weekend breakfast meal. Worth a go!
Hmmm Woolworths you need to fire your mathemetician. Made in Australia from at least 18% Australian ingredients. Ingredients: Pork (90%), Water, Cure (Salt, Sugar, Mineral Salts), Antioxidant, Preservative. If the main ingredient is 90% pork how on earth can you claim that 18% of the product is Australian? The fact that Woolworths has a Made in Australia symbol and claim with only 18% Australian content really irks me. This is totally misleading to the consumer and very dishonest on Woolworths' behalf. If the product is 90% pork and the Australian ingredients are 18% then you can safely assume that the pork is fully imported, unless of course they are using left over bits from Australian pork???Shame on you Woolworths.... this should be referred to Choice for a ... MoreHmmm Woolworths you need to fire your mathemetician. OK, that aside, the product itself was quite tasty and cooked up nicely. At $9 for one kilo that is really good value, however, I would not buy it as it clearly is not Australian Pork. The packaging really needs to disclose where the product is from. Please note the product packaging is slightly different to the packaging in the Bunch promotion, however, this is the new, updated packaging and the product scanned for free as a Bunch sample. I would rather spend the extra and support Australian producers.
Good Flavor and Good Bargain. I have been using Woolworths Essentials Middle Bacon for several years. Typically I cut off the rind from each rasher of bacon then then wrap each one in plastic wrap before storing it in the freezer. That way I can grab just one or two rashers at a time to use in cooking. I enjoy the bacon in several different types of recipes and meals. Twice a week I have bacon, fried eggs and toast for breakfast, my favorite meal. I like my bacon crispy, so I take my time cooking up the bacon just the way I like it. I also use the bacon for a BLT sandwich (bacon, lettuce & tomato) which I serve on toast with mayonnaise. My recipe for pumpkin soup calls for 1 or 2 rashers of bacon. I dice the bacon and fry it with onions and garlic before adding in the pumpkin and chicken broth. The bacon really adds a good flavor to the soup. Another family favorite is a recipe we call "Rippin' Strippin' Chicken". I wrap a chicken breast in bacon and then brown them. The chicken and bacon are then baked in a sauce mixture of Cream of Mushroom Soup mixed with sour cream and black pepper. It's a no fail recipe which makes a great meal!It would be nice to have the bacon packaged without the rind on it, but I don't mind taking the time to trim it and I realize that it has a bargain price which precludes removing the rind. My only complaint about this bacon (and ALL bacon I have cooked with in Australia) is that it appears to be injected with water. It is pretty obvious when you watch the bacon cook and see the fluid come out of it and can see how much it shrinks as it is cooking. To me, that is a sign of a "rip off". But the bottom line is that I reckon this is a fine product with great flavor and a good yield (12 or 13 rashers per kilogram) and I will continue to buy it and eat it.
