These are absolutely amazing. I wanted a pair of shoes less aggressive than the Crosstrek for hiking, especially during the very rainy seasons we have here in the PNW. Me feet are dry, the shoes are really comfy, definitely heavier than the Crosstrek but you get used to it and within one day you forget about it. Nice cushion and grip and they're also freaking good looking! I usually am a 8.5 for other shoes (in between 8.5/9) and the size 8 is perfect. Easy to tie up and stays in place. Anyways - I could go on for a while. These are great. I can not assess of the durability yet since it's been a week of daily use only, but so far so good. Will report back in a year but most shoes at Salomon have always lasted ages for me.

I purchased the Salomon X Ultra 4 Wide Gore-Tex shoes in a size 7.5 to wear on our vacation in Maine for general hiking and one mountain hike. I couldn't find a wide waterproof shoe locally, so based on the reviews I took a chance and ordered these. I'm so glad I did. Maine had two late storms and Mount Chase was blanked in deep snow up to 18” deep! It was warm and sunny, so the snow was melting underneath and my new Salomon’s sloshed through, often breaking through to the mud or melted snow below. The dirty girl gaiters kept chunks of snow out, so my feet only got a little wet when they were briefly submerged in water. Pair that with a pair of darn tough socks, and you’ve got a winning combination. How is the Width?: I cut a bright orange piece of paper to match ... MoreI purchased the Salomon X Ultra 4 Wide Gore-Tex shoes in a size 7.5 to wear on our vacation in Maine for general hiking and one mountain hike. With the paper under my foot viewed from above, it isn't visible at all unless I lean slightly left or right. These shoes are the perfect width for me. I hope that helps you decide if these are the right width for you.Comfort? I had more room in the shoes than I have with any others, so at first, I wondered if my feet would slide a bit and perhaps cause blisters. I was on my feet for over 9 hours that first day and my feet did not hurt at all! They were very comfortable.Laces? I appreciated this style of laces because they don't come untied.Sole? There were some steep places on Mount Chase where I had to kick the snow with my toe to get a grip and climb higher. These shoes performed beautifully for this mid-50’s Florida native who had no idea she would appreciate the grippy outsole so much!I have never written such a detailed review, but I appreciate the design of these shoes so much and wanted to share. I highly recommend them!

I've been wearing these for about a month now, and overall I am quite happy with the shoe. They were comfortable right out of the box, and fit true to size. I like the soles, which provide lots of grip when needed. The padded tongue is good, although it does tend to shift to one side. The thing I like the least is the lacing system. I don't like the thin laces with the toggle, as they doesn't stay tightened, and despite the little pocket for storage, the lace end tends to escape. If these came with traditional tie up laces, they'd be perfect.Waterproof quality is good, and I've have no issues with wet feet.Overall, a fantastic shoe; just the lacing system is a bit off-putting for me.

First pair of Salomon's I bought was in 2020. Unbelievably comfortable but not cute. I still wear them but there's a small rip in the mesh and one of the laces is about to break (after 4 years I'd say that's a good shoe!). Now these are cute but NOT comfortable. I'm always a women's size 7. These basically latch onto your foot (with the new laces) and leave your toes and heels hangin. The insoles are NOT comfortable. Not sure if you'll last hiking in these for long? Unless you have a higher ankle bone? It's already digging into my inner ankle bone after 2 hours. In addition, I doubt I will get 4 years out of these shoes. SO disappointed! Why did you remove the comfort and quality?!!!
I was excited to get these, as I loved my 5 year old pair of Salomons. I’m usually a size 6 that is a European 36 or 36.5. These are a 37+. Interestingly, although they were too long in the foot, the lacing system made them feel comfortably snug on my foot. I have a moderately wide foot with a very high instep and the shoe was comfortable in all those places. The problem was the arch support. I need a good arch support but this one started too far back in the shoe for my foot, so it felt like I was walking on a bump under part of my foot. This could be a “me” thing, I think, though, as I have had the issue before in shoes that were a 36 or 36.5, too. I’m detailing it here in case others might have the same issue! Sadly, I had to return them a week ago. Still waiting ... MoreI was excited to get these, as I loved my 5 year old pair of Salomons. I’m usually a size 6 that is a European 36 or 36.5. I just got these, but so far they seem great. They are super-comfortable right away, and I love the distinctive quick-lace feature. The red is really cool. I realized that my last pair of Salomons were probably five years old. It really is a testament to how well-made Salomons are that they still felt as good as they did. I happened to look at the soles and noticed that they tread had totally worn down in places--then I counted the years and realized how old they were. Salomons are built to last! I think my last pair were actually a trail running shoe, but these hiking shoes seem super-light, too, with a slightly rounder shape and more substantial chassis. Looking forward to trying these on the trail soon!
I’ve been a solid Salomon customer for a long time now. I am replacing my x ultra from seven years ago. They’ve been on many adventures and many miles and they just started wearing out now. I decided to try this new x ultra and it is not my favorite. Very stiff shoe with a much narrower toe box than before. I find the shoe pinches my foot around my ball joint when I walk. I’ve used these shoes for a couple months and 20-25 miles at this point and they still don’t feel broken in. I also bought the Solomon X ultra 360 Climasalomon at the same time and I find this is a much more comfortable shoe… very similar to previous styles. No breaking in required and comfortable from the get-go. As for the waterproofing, I cannot judge as I have not used them in the rain yet. When I opened these I was surprise at how good looking they were. When I ordered them I thought they were a bit ugly but I liked med the features, especially the lateral support. have bunions and am 5 months out from knee surgery and have had a hard finding shoes that fit. I have sent back several pairs of shoes with the super thick soles because they pinched my bunion or did not have enough arch support. These felt perfect when I first slipped them on. I have been trail walking a mile or 2 a day. These are comfortable, supportive, and have great traction. I would definitely buy them again.
Searching for a waterproof low hiker for my daily dog walk on a rails to trails. This is my 3rd attempt to purchase a low hiker that is actually waterproof. I threw these in my bag as a last minute gamble on a recent trip to NC and after seeing a park ranger wearing the mid-style of this model and asking her about how long she had been wearing them and if they were still waterproof. She said 4 years and yes they were. She wears them every work day. I had just trashed a pair of low hikers in another brand after 4 months they were no longer waterproof and showed much wear. I am hopeful these will last a year. I log a lot of miles. They fit pretty much right out of the box. Salomon run large for me, I usually wear a 40 EU 9 US, but for hiking I size up for socks. I am hopeful these will last a year. I log a lot of miles. They fit pretty much right out of the box. Salomon run large for me, I usually wear a 40 EU 9 US, but for hiking I size up for socks. No need to size up for thick socks. There is plenty of room and the lacing system doesn't start until past the toe box so the roomy toe box is constant. I have walked in river and wet fields and they kept my feet DRY. My last pair of (other brand) hikers were waterproof but the shoe was wet after hiking and had to be dried each evening in order to be able to hike the next day, that isn't always possible. With these X Ultra 4, my feet are not sweaty. Big points for waterproof and breathable. The profile is slimmer than a big clunky hiker and I found the grip to be enough to manage slippery rocks and river edges. Wore them daily for 8 hrs right out of the box. They are winners.
I bought these shoes because I have the same pair in a hiking boot and I absolutely love them. My hiking boots fit wonderfully and are a size 7.5 so I assumed these would work perfectly for me in the same size. I broke my ankle about 9 years ago so I need a lot of ankle support and the Salomon brand has been my go to. Unfortunately, despite these being the same size, they are too wide and I think I'll need the next size down, size 7. I wore the boots for a 2 mile trail walk to make sure they worked with my foot/supported my ankle and realized they were a bit too big. When I reached out to customer service to try to make an exchange, I was shocked to learn that the Salomon policy is no returns if the boots are worn outside. I am truly shocked because this brand is ideal for outdoor use. How would one know if they fit right without trying them out on an incline/outdoor terrain? As someone who works hard (educator) for a living salary, investing in these shoes took some time and thought not to mention, they are pricey so you'd hope that Salomon would be on board with helping someone in my situation. Super bummed.
