Honestly, I was expecting to have to return these hiking boots. I have had so many boots I have tried, and that just made my feet miserable. But these, these are pretty miraculous. For the first time, my feet do not feel as if they are about to suffocate, and I can actually see myself wearing them for the comfort the bottoms of my feet feel. However, I do have one issue that does not seem to be resolving, which is where the ankle rubs on my right boot. It may be because I have had many a twisted ankle on that side, so there could just be some weirdness that makes my ankle set in the boot rim weird. Anyway, I have a blister, and it’s annoying. I want to push through it if I know the boot will eventually not give me a blister there anymore. I would be curious to try ... MoreHonestly, I was expecting to have to return these hiking boots. Comfortable, and they leave my feet dry even after spraying with the hose, while I'm wearing them. They are nice and protective, while being a more than decent minimalist shoe. That said, there's not so much play in the shoe that if you like to push down with your toes, and propel, these will allow you to do so in barefoot-like comfort. These sacrifice a bit of the foot movement for protection. That said, I'll have no qualms taking these into snow, or rain, or moderate mud paired with gaiters. They are sturdy, and by far the best of my shoes for thermal regulation, cold or warm, without being purpose built for extremes in either. The lug shape really picks up debris, but the entire shoe is easy to clean by spraying down. Still, these seem excellent for my four season purposes and the ever repetitive chore of watering the yard. It's hard to cater to the barefoot minimalist crowd and check all the conventional boxes of special features, but I think this company is hands down, the best at delivering such products. Vivobarefoot, or Vibram fivefingers, have caught either my imagination and admiration, or my patronage as I've tried to outfit my wardrobe with the fewest shoes possible to cover the most circumstances, and I think when it comes to the practical, utilitarian little details, they both fall behind Xero Shoes. Somehow, I don't find myself facing fall and worrying the shoes I'll be relying on will mold in the toe box if they don't get dried religiously, or that a bit of of inner shoe will be rubbing a blister into being just as I pass the mile of no return, or that the uppers will be peeling away from the sole of a very expensive pair of shoes within the year. I'm the kind of person who can mark eras of my life by the shoes I've worn. As a kid, I wore shoes until I outgrew them, and I usually wore one pair of shoes for years at a time, when I wasn't barefoot. The whole notion of a practical wardrobe for occasions, or seasons? Yeah... flexible- extremely whimsical, but committing to minimalist footwear was something deeper. It was like standing up or taking a deep breath for the first time, and telling myself I was never going back to stooping or shallow breathing ever again. It turns out, you need partners to support a grand goal like that, especially when faced with the ever present practicalities of society and nature. You do what you can. You live in bright blue shoes... You become grateful for every bit of cooperative boldness that helps you meet your own goals, and then you meet out in the world people who work the problem, like you can only imagine doing in your wildest dreams! Barefoot shoes have been a dream for my feet and spine. When looking for hiking boots these caught my eye because they seemed reasonably priced and I like the look. My usual size 10 fit well and feel great gripping the earth while hiking. However, I had a couple disappointments. Within three wears the seam ripped on one of the shoelace eyelets which seems unreasonable as I’m careful with my gear. The other issue is the complete lack of water resistance. The first time I wore these in the wild I walked through a dewey meadow at daybreak and by the time I crossed that 2/10 mile field my shoes, socks and feet were utterly soaked. This was just condensation on grass, there had been no recent rain. I think the issue is the lightweight materials as well as the loose ... MoreBarefoot shoes have been a dream for my feet and spine. Other hiking boots secure the tongue under the laces preventing it from sliding and allowing an access point for water/dirt to get in. I know these aren’t waterproof, but I was really surprised how soaked they got on my first walk, I had to wring out my dripping socks after removing them. On the upside, the boots dried relatively quickly in the sun… I really like the fit and feel so I added a waterproof coating that I hope will help, but when I get a chance I will invest the extra dollars in hiking boots from my most trusted barefoot brand, Vivo barefoot.

I was blown away by how these boots felt! With the design, I could actually feel the trail more in a way that I was much more aware and surefooted. I initially bought a size 9.5 which is a half size up from my usual- that still wasn’t enough so I got a 10 instead. That was PERFECT. I just came back from doing the Presidential Traverse which is just over 20 miles (I added a few to do two additional summits) over three days. If you’re familiar with the White Mountains it can be ROUGH and very rocky. I was so surprised that I barely thought about my feet! I only have the SLIGHTEST start of a blister under one of my big toes and that’s … honestly to be expected from hiking in the Whites from just a few hours. This is my 5th pair of Xero shoes, if you don’t count my attempt to make the DIY sandal work (I have extremely narrow feet, and the precut ones are too wide and tend to flop around, so I ended up with a pair of 5-finger vibrams that I use instead of sandals all summer). My biggest gripe against minimalist shoes is how they let in the cold through the sole, but I can tell that these hiking shoes won’t. They don’t need to be broken in; I went for a walk/jog around the local park with them this morning and they were wonderful! Just what I need for running and walking in the winter here in the northwest. I bought a half size larger than I usually wear to accommodate thicker socks. I can use other shoes for hiking in the summer, but these fit the bill for the northwest, which gets more rain than snow in winter. These and the Speed Force are my favorites, depending on the time of year. The Speed Force are too low to keep my feet dry when it rains, and they tend to be slippery on smooth, wet rocks or concrete, so I can’t wear them in wet weather. These hiking shoes will definitely be what I wear when exercising outside this winter!
I have struggled to find the right Xero shoes for me, and thought the DayLite Hiker would be the one. They were just a bit snug on my slightly wide feet with thicker socks, but I figured they would break in to be just right. I was mostly correct, in that my left foot feels great in them. Apparently, my right foot, is slightly wider with a slightly higher instep than the left one, and this is causing problems and pain for my foot. The seam/stitching on the top of the shoe presses into the top of my foot at the base of my big toe when I walk, causing pain. I was excited about the possibility of these shoes, I do a lot of walking and love the idea of barefoot shoes, but it’s just not working out for me. Maybe I should have custom ordered and tried a men’s shoe for the right foot, but I’ve never had this issue before so couldn’t have known. Unfortunately, I’ve worn them in an attempt to break them in, so am ineligible for another exchange. (I already exchanged 3 pairs trying to find the right fit and land on the right pair for my feet and lifestyle.)
I’m still unsure about this purchase. Straight out of the box they felt to short. My right foot big toe was jammed all the way up against front of the shoe. I ordered a half size up from usual as suggested. That was just at initial try on. When I went to actually wear them and had them laced up my foot was held back in position where it should be. There’s a bit to much padding in the ankle part of the shoe and that was pushing my foot forward before lacing. After wearing for about 8 hours the right shoe felt like that padding was really putting pressure on the Achilles’ tendon just above my heal. They were a bit snug in the width across my toes. But I really don’t want a hiking boot to be loose at all. I wear thin socks. I’d suggest ordering up a full size if you ... MoreI’m still unsure about this purchase. And again with my right foot, the width was putting pressure on outside part of my foot near my toes. Between the heal pain and pain due to width I was definitely glad to get them off after the first 8 hours. Soles on these are rather thick and stiff for barefoot but as a hiking shoe that’s probably better. My barefoot sneakers in another brand are so responsive to the ground that small rocks definitely feel like barefooted when stepped on. Ouch! I’m expecting these to give more protection against rocks on the trail yet have my foot close to the ground, with a little flex, to prevent rolled ankles.Gave 4 stars due to width.I’m really hoping after break in period these will work for me.
Last summer I bought my first pair of Xero shoes, women's HFS, to backpack Europe. I love them! So this year, I decided to retire my traditional rigid hiking boots and try Xero styles. I ordered the same size as my HFS, women's 9.5. I bought three pairs (all women's 9.5): Prio Neo, Xcursion Fusion, and DayLite Hiker Fusion. The Prio Neo and Xcursion Fusion both fit great, just like my HFS. However, the DayLite Hiker Fusion were HUGE, at least a full size larger than my actual size. I could not believe that they would fit so differently than the other 3 styles that I verified whether or not they had packaged the wrong size in the 9.5 box. I did not take the advice in the description and order half-size larger, I ordered my true size. Shoe Size: I read a lot of reviews that mentioned the shoes ran small, so I ordered a size up and that was the right call. I recommend others take that into consideration when buying from the company.Breaking in: like other reviews, yeah, it's not about the soles needing breaking in. They don't. It feels light and easy to step and move around. They are easily forgotten while on the feet. Interestingly, the top part of the shoes are what I'm working on getting used to. There isn't a lot of give to the lacing or the opening around the ankle. It's not uncomfortable at all, but it's noticeable in that it feels secure and immovable. These are also the first shoes I've ever owned (with laces) that refuse to let me slip them off while the laces are still tied. These are also the first shoes I've ever owned (with laces) that refuse to let me slip them off while the laces are still tied. Not that I can't be an adult about it, but it's funny that I am having to get used to tying and untying my shoes every time I want to put them on. I consider this a good thing, because it means that even if the laces were to come undone, it seems unlikely that the shoe would slip off, say over uneven terrain.Style: It's so seldom that I can find a well-made pair of women's shoes that are good for every day use, are a reasonable price, and that also happen to not be some variation of pink, teal, or white. I want a dark color to match everything. I'm stoked that these fit the bill, being black with just a little bit of smoky purple.Quality: As far as I can see, the shoes look and feel incredibly sturdy for how light they are. The title of my review is part of my one concern, which is longevity. The company boasts a 5k mile warranty, which is cool, but my test of time has always proven to be within about 6 months or less before the outer soles are shorn to bits, the inner soles are ground down to the base, or parts start flapping that shouldn't. I am a fan of all-purpose shoes, and outside of boots, everything else seems to have an expiration date of 6 months or less with me, based upon my use. It eats up a lot of money. And while these shoes were a great price for what they offer, and it looks like they will legitimately hold up, only time will tell how solid they really are.Bottom Line: I really love them, they feel great, and I hope they last a long time.
Great for everyday use. Already put about 78 miles on these since I first received them. I opted for the 10.5 just because I prefer to wear thicker socks. I wear a liner and good hiking socks. Pay attention to how you tie your boots. It does make a difference. Experiment with socks and terrain every chance you get. Helps with ankle stability even if not tied at the last loop. You become more aware of your steps because they are lightweight. Very comfortable for all day wear. Perfect on and off the trail. Stylish with a tread that bites down on the surface to keep you going. There is a waterproof version, I haven't tried those yet but I'm pretty sure they will be just as comfortable and durable.
