Background: I purchased the Prios in March of 2022 and have worn (abused) them an average of 8 hours a week for the last two years. I bought the Prios following a severe high-ankle sprain I sustained while running in a maximalist foam shoe. After I graduated from my crutches the Prios lended themselves well to daily physical therapy, and were instrumental in helping me retrain my proprioception. Since then I have primarily used the Prios for amateur boxing training (jump roping, sparring, shadow boxing, and high intensity calisthenics). I also wore these shoes for short runs (≤3 miles), weight room sessions, slacklining, and running errands around town. For reference I am 190 lbs (86 kg) and wear a men's size 11.5. It is finally time to replace my Prios, and while ... MoreBackground: I purchased the Prios in March of 2022 and have worn (abused) them an average of 8 hours a week for the last two years. It is finally time to replace my Prios, and while I'm curious about other Xero models my experience with the Prios was so positive than I am reluctant to switch styles.Read on for pros, cons, summary, and suggestions:Pros: The shoes were comfortable out of the box and ran true to size. True to Xero's marketing I did not wear out the outsole. Boxing footwork puts tremendous lateral and rotational stress on shoe sidewalls and soles respectively. In my 8 years of boxing I have worn a variety of footwear, and the Prios were as durable and comfortable as any shoe I have abused, with the added bonus of being a barefoot trainer. Being able to root and connect to the ground helps with my balance and power transfer, and the thin soles are essential for maintaining the agility required for ringwork (the vast majority of wrestling and boxing shoes tend to be low-no drop for this reason, but most of them are stiff and cram your toes into a tight, pointy box). The fact that this shoe survived two years of this type of training is remarkable. I never had a lace or strap break, the mesh upper remains intact, and I experienced only minimal flaking of the leather toe cap. This shoe is very breathable, and even though I sweat through them every session (my coach insists on keeping the gym at 90 degrees F (32.2 degrees C)) they were always bone dry the next day. Unlike the rest of my boxing kit and other shoes I've worn, the Prios resisted funky foot smell admirably and are easy to wash. They also travel well and pack into a gym bag or suitcase better than any shoe I've previously worn. While serious powerlifters seem to be all about high-drop platforms, I felt grounded, balanced, and explosive while wearing the Prios for weighted single-leg exercises, sled pushes, box jumps, deadlifts, and squats. Likewise the protection and connection of the shoe is well adapted to slacklining outside when sharp sticks and stones are too much for bare feet.Cons: About 18 months in I did wear a hole clean through the honeycomb insole where the ball of my foot swivels while throwing my cross (dominant hand punch). This is not unusual or unique to Xero shoes, and I considered just buying a replacement pair of insoles (found under the "accessories" section of the website), but found the shipping cost to be prohibitive relative to the cost of the insoles themselves. Given the discrepancy in durability between the insoles and outsoles, it would be nice if shipping on replacement insoles were free. Instead I toughed it out with holy insoles for another six months, during which the uppers began to slightly separate from the outsole creating a mild (~5mm) flapper. This wasn't a failure of the sole itself, but an inevitable breakdown of the adhesive that joins the upper and outsole together. Other boxing shoes I have worn have had physical stitching connecting the outsole to the upper which may mitigate this issue better than glue alone.Summary: I suspect Xero was striving to put the "-prio," in proprioception when they conceived these shoes, and overall they did a fantastic job. The combination of biofeedback and protection provided by this shoe strikes a highly functional compromise that is great for physical therapy, agility, HIIT, martial arts, balance, and general fitness training. You can expect better than average durability out of these shoes, accordingly you can expect to wear through the insoles before the rest of the shoe is ready for retirement, so plan and purchase replacement insoles accordingly. Overall this is an outstanding piece of equipment for the money and I will be buying a second pair. Strong work Xero shoes!Suggestions: Xero, if you're listening, please provide free shipping on replacement insoles, and considering offering a free replacement pair per shoe purchase. The life of the outsoles is great, but holy insoles are no good! Your shoes are surprisingly durable, but if the connection between the uppers and outsoles were reinforced (say, by integrating high-tensile connective stitching in addition to adhesive), this shoe would be truly bomber. Lastly, if your shoes were carried at an in-person retailer (say, REI stores) I suspect it would be a win-win for your companies, and a win for consumers as well. Being able to try on your shoes in-store would introduce more feet to relative freedom, with the ancillary benefit of expediting returns without cumbersome shipping arrangements.*If you found this review helpful please click the thumbs up in the lower right corner of this box so others can find it. I shred shoes. I could get nine months out of a pair before I got turned onto Xeros. I've been wearing this pair (second prio, third pair of xero kicks) for TWO YEARS now... walking, running, full time outside work, rain, snow, mountaineering, backpacking - I've had to apply some glue a couple times to keep the uppers and sole together, but they remain intact, wearable, and comfy. The only other footwear I use are sandals and heavyduty snow boots. I went Xero five years ago because I'm mega prone to recurring injury due to blown out ankle ligaments, and my footwear (a popular canvas sneaker) contributed to a bad one while just stepping off a curb onto a crosswalk. I love my light blue Prios. I am over 70 and have had trouble with my arthritic feet for a long time. It has been hard to find shoes that allow enough room for my toes but don't slip in the heel. I have a small bunion on my left foot and my big toe has been sliding under my second toe on both feet for a long time. I really feel like these shoes are giving my feet another chance to behave normally. My only objection to these shoes is that most colors come with a white sole. I wear them out in my garden and yard - walking dogs, etc. I wish there were more colors available without the white (navy blue in particular but a green would be nice too). My arches were a little sore at first wearing these all day but that seems to be going away. I'm preparing to order a couple ... MoreI love my light blue Prios. My arches were a little sore at first wearing these all day but that seems to be going away. I'm preparing to order a couple more pairs - one in leather for when cold weather arrives. I'd like to branch out and try some of the other styles but the Prios are just so awesome. It's hard to tell from the descriptions, which shoes are similar or the same - more or less padded - more or less toe space. The only way to guess is by reading the reviews. I'd also like some waterproof boots but the reviews scared me off.
Some months ago, I ordered a pair of Gen 1 HFS shoes in my usual size of 11.5 (US). These fit perfectly, like a second skin, and are my favorite pair of running shoes. My HFS's are bright red though, and I wanted something a little more neutral, so I decided to try out the black and white Prio's.Xero currently recommends "ordering your usual size" on the product page, and I know the size 11.5 HFS fit me perfectly, so I ordered the size 11.5 Prio. After a single, 30 minute tennis session, I realized that the Prio's are too big. My feet slide around in them, both side to side and front to back, making doing anything athletic basically impossible. Meaning I am now stuck with a $100 pair of shoes that I cannot use unless I wear two pairs of socks. Two stars because the quality seems fine and I still love my HFS. That said, I have read other reviews mentioning these shoes running a little large. I think Xero either needs to update their sizing recommendations for this model, or perhaps consider revising their return policy. I do not know how they expect people to determine if a shoe meets their needs without, you know, actually using them.
I got these just to wear as a weightlifting shoe but I got converted and now I take them everywhere. The red, white, and blue color is very eye catching and stylish. The zero heel drop and wide toe box means I am much more stable on my feet. I used to have bad balance and really bad supination, and these feel better than the sole inserts I bought for these issues. Now I can put weight in my heels instead of my toes and I barely even wobble when lunging, squatting, deadlifting, standing on one foot, anything. I don't run but they are great for walking and for the gym. For shoes under $100 you would be hard pressed to find better than these. The shoe is still steady though and does not shift around on my foot with the laces tied as the midfoot and heel are tighter to the foot. I wear them with and without socks.I see a lot of negative reviews on Xero's and I think that they come from people who have no idea what they are getting into. Research barefoot shoes and adjust to them slowly or else they will hurt. Understand that the wide toe box will look and feel odd if you're used to conventional shoes. Realize they're not for everyone. Try them on in person before buying.
Overall I'm very pleased with these shoes. It's my first experience with zero lift shoes so I had certain expectations going in, which matched surprisingly close to my first experience. They are very comfortable, fit well and the sizing is right for me. As I walked in them, there was a noticeable difference to my prior walking/trail shoes that only had a 7 degree lift, which is relatively low for any walking shoe except the zero lifts. My calf muscles definitely needed to adapt, as they were sore the next day and it took about 5-7 days for the soreness to stop. I was alerted to this possibility, though, from the information included in the box with the shoes, so I started with short walks and wearing them around the house. I was alerted to this possibility, though, from the information included in the box with the shoes, so I started with short walks and wearing them around the house. I have worn them both with and without socks and the comfort insoles. There is a definite change in feel as I successively remove these comfort layers. Now to the minor issue - shoe string length. Based on how I lace them, the strings provided are too short, by about 2-3 inches. They are difficult to tie as there is not enough length to handle easily. However, I am using the extra top lacing hole that is optional to use. I prefer to use it but may change that, because without the extra length to use this top hole I would probably have more than ample length to tie them easily. I noticed in the newer Prio Neos that they eliminated this top (and extra) hole, so seems like I should just avoid it.I've only been wearing these for about 10 days so I can't speak to their durability. Certainly, based on their warranty alone, the sole will prove to be very durable. What remains to be seen is how the rest of the shoe holds up. It looks like quality materials and production but I'll know more in a year.Overall, I'm happy and definitely recommend.
During an intense three days of demo on a home rehab in Denver - wearing my heavy work boots - my left foot "locked" up and became very painful - even to the touch - I could not even wear flip flops. I could not walk without some pretty severe pain. After a visit to an orthopedic doctor with xrays - nothing was broken but we needed an MRI to figure out next steps. After the MRI my doctor recommended a foam diabetic boot so I could at least get around until we had the MRI results - I was in the middle of a home rehab. This boot was still far too painful, Crocs were far too painful, flip flops etc...Finally I googled for a solution and stumbled upon Xero Shoes. The reviews and marketing sounded like they might have something that would work for me - and they were based in Denver and had an outlet there - after having spent the day with my son driving me around looking for a shoe to get me back on my feet - we arrived at Xero Shoes with 30 minutes to closing. When we arrived at Xero Shoes there were two customers already there - when it became apparent that I was "new" to Xero they both engaged - neither one of them could say enough good things about how Xero shoes had actually changed their lives - they each already owned multiple pairs and were back to purchase another pair.I explained my situation and they both recommended the Prio. With limited time to closing I immediately tried on the Prio - tears came to my eyes as I slid the left shoe on - it was very painful on the top and bottom of the foot - but once it was on - I COULD WALK - the pain was still there but I could get around, I was still limping but there was definitely less pain than anything else I had tried.I chose a color, thanked my two friends and bought a size 12 Prio and walked out of the store with them on my feet.I was merely looking for a shoe where I could get to my feet and finish the home rehab - what I got was far more. After three days of wearing nothing but the Prio the pain was reduced and my foot was flexing - not frozen anymore. After one week most of the pain was gone, and I had virtually full range of motion in my foot. After two weeks I had no pain, better range of motion than I ever remember having. I was working 12-13 hour days on my feet at the construction site - I was there for another three weeks after that - after over six weeks on a construction site wearing the Prio everyday - they looked like new and more importantly my feet felt like new.I had always had some nueropathy in my right foot which led to my right foot feeling like it was on fire by the end of a long day on my feet. The nueropathy is still present but I no longer experience the pain I used to.I now wear nothing but Xero shoes. I even golf with them - I can literally feel the greens. They seem to have helped my general overall balance. My wife now wears them, my 88 year old mother and 91 year old father now wear them -it is helping with their balance, my cousin now wears them - and we are all experiencing the straight simplicity of the shoes in our own ways.I still can not truly understand how a shoe could accomplish all of this but when all else fails - getting simple is usually a good first step - no pun intended.I just purchased a pair of your hiking boots and I am looking at your sandals and casual shoes.Thank you very much for getting me back on my feet!
Shoe is great, when they fit! Super comfortable, and they hold up ok. I've got 2 pairs of the fusion light hikers, the kelso, these x2, and the leather version for work. The insole has a habit of moving around which I use a dab of shoe goo to stop.If you attempt to use the free exchange program, ensure you get a tracking number. From what I can discern, a while back the shoe mold was changed and the size 12's I bought that fit perfectly were too snug when I repurchased. Maybe my feet grew a bit? At 37 years old, I doubt it, but who knows?Regardless, after following the return/exchange instructions, several weeks went by with no response/update. When I wrote to customer service, they said they couldn't find the shoes/package. I no longer had the tracking ID ... MoreShoe is great, when they fit! Super comfortable, and they hold up ok. When I wrote to customer service, they said they couldn't find the shoes/package. I no longer had the tracking ID number, and got no more traction with support. So, either UPS lost the package with Return Number properly affixed, or Xero has room for improvement in their customer service/returns department. Either way, moral of the story: make sure you follow up your return with a tracking number if you need a return/exchange.The soles on my most worn prios are shot after a lot of use. I would've replaced a while back but after the above experience, burning $90 for the shoe and $30 for return shipping, I've been very leery about reordering directly from Xero. Might be worth buying from someone like Amazon to have some other third party on your side if you need exchanges.
Unfortunately these shows don't do it for me. Wish I could return. First, the sole is too slippery, that plastic-y type rubber. I'd rather be barefoot, but I wear the shoes when the ground is too cold or spiky, and I want maximum engagement with the ground, to feel and hold it with my foot, and these soles don't facilitate that. Second, the shape/fit: It doesn't quite match my foot shape. This probably isn't true for everyone but makes the show too tight in some places and not tight enough in others, again disrupting the 'barefoot' feel and engagement I seek. Finally, the look. I hate to say it, but this is one of the worst parts about preferring zero-drop wide toe box shoes without fluffed sole (barefoot or minimalist): aesthetic options are limited and frankly ... I got the blue, and they're not shockingly ****, just somewhere between sorta goofy/unattractive and really blah.I'm on a years-long hunt for barefoot/minimalist shoes to hike in (waterproof, good sole), go around town in, and run long distances in, and I just can't find any that really hit the spot for me :'(
