A stunning guitar! I am so pleasantly surprised.

I have a few parlor guitars and a midsize option. I wanted one decent full size in my collection but as with all of my guitars, I am not willing to spend thousands. I want decent sound and playability for myself as I only play for myself. I spent some time reviewing guitars and came upon this one. I waited for several weeks as they were on back order. I had a professional set up on it as I have with all my A&L's, Seagull cedar tops. My luthier has a 40-yr old Martin D18 and he put them side by side. He said the FGX5 was quite admirable up against his out of the box and offered it would only get better with play. I have had this beautiful instrument since June 2024. Thanks Tyler at Sweetwater for helping me get on the waitlist; it was SO worth it. Best purchase I've made for myself in absolute years. And I am becoming a better player because I pick this up almost everyday. If you are on the fence for a reasonably priced guitar, don't be wary about this model. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in the FGX5. Yamaha really delivered in this production. (there is no incentive for this review other than my geniune appreciation).

Got this as a restock (manufacturer refurbished from Yamaha) for a discounted price ($200 off plus $96 points credit). The only thing out of the ordinary I could see was a small 1cm blemish or area of discoloration in the finish on the back of the guitar which I've photo'd. Other than that this guitar showed no signs of use. I feel like I got a good deal. This thing exudes quality craftsmanship upon close examination. Love the satin finish- easy to keep clean. The sound is amazing- I've never owned let alone heard an acoustic that sounds this good. The tone is very woody w rich bass and good projection and sustain. Setup is perfect for me out of the box. The electronics work well and sound good amplified. Love the mic adjustment. I seriously can't stop playing this ... MoreGot this as a restock (manufacturer refurbished from Yamaha) for a discounted price ($200 off plus $96 points credit). This is a very nice acoustic guitar that plays well as set up from the factory. This is the first guitar that I haven't had to make any adjustments to so that I can enjoy the playing experience immediately. This guitar is well balanced, with a nice crisp mid-range and solid bass. I personally think the highs sparkle without sounding too brittle. I was originally looking for the FG5 without electronics but was unable to find one locally, but the pickup system has been a pleasant surprise, I just use it with my THR10II on the acoustic setting and it sounds great. I highly recomend this to someone who appreciates a quality instrument without spending exhorbitant amounts of cash. My best analogy for this guitar is like wearing your favorite pair of blue jeans, very ... MoreThis is a very nice acoustic guitar that plays well as set up from the factory. I grab it all the time and it never leaves the guitar stand in my office, very easy to play for hours. For reference my dealer also carries Taylor and Martin Guitars, I compared this to the Taylor 717 Grand Pacific Builders Eddition which is what I initially planned to buy when I went to my dealer. The Taylor was awesome with excellent build quality and playability. The FGX5 played nearly as well, for half the price. I preferred the sound of the Mahogany bodied Yamaha so I bought it. Great guitar!

Excellent guitar for the price
31 December 2023

You just can't go wrong with a Yamaha guitar... very consistent and unlikely you'd find a bad one. I ordered site unseen and right out of the box the guitar was good (very good intonation and good action). With this particular model, the sound and design is an upgrade from their $1000 and under guitars with a pickup system that sounds marvelous. Acoustically the scalloped bracing and the torrified top make this guitar louder than without. I am a studio session guitarist and will use this for some of my recordings and live performance. Understand that this guitar is not a Bourgeois, Collings or a Martin D41, but those guitars are not $8,000 better than an FGX5. Great value.

High Quality Instrument by Yamaha

Very impressed with the quality and sound. It sounds so crisp and clear while using a pick. Finger style, it's a little quiet maybe. I believe it will get better with age. This is one guitar I will never sell. Came with a very high quality hard shell case. I appreciate the instructions and recomendations on the Atmosfeel Electronics. I'm not an expert on this, but it sounds very nice when plugged into my amp, haven't tried a PA plug in yet.

I've changed my mind on Yamaha guitars

I have not treated the name Yamaha with a lot of respect. I'm a Martin Gibson fan. American made defined the quality. But. For some reason I bought a rosewood Yamaha last week and was so impressed I bought this one. Blew me away. The depth of tone is amazing. The ease of playing is so profound. I am so looking forward to playing this out.

My 1st really good guitar
27 July 2021

I have gone from a good guitar, Epiphone DR500 Mastercraft, to a really good guitar, the FGX5. The difference is very noticeable.I still like my Epiphone and will keep it, but the very warm, rich, balanced tone and resonance that comes out of the FGX5 is butter. As poor of a guitar player that I am, I can't keep my hands off of her.Due to my OCD I want to get the FGX5 set up. With that said, she felt and sounded good right out of the box. I think the action might be a bit high, but other than that, what a sweet guitar. I did change strings to Elixir #11 nanoweb. I like them better than what the guitar came with; but I l think it's mostly b/c I'm a novice. When I plug the FGX5 into my Positive Grid Spark amp it's not bad, but remember, it is just a practice amp. ... MoreI have gone from a good guitar, Epiphone DR500 Mastercraft, to a really good guitar, the FGX5. Other than that, what a sweet, beautiful, superb sounding, masterly built guitar.Oh, and the hard case it comes with is just as good. I really think you will be hard pressed to find something of this quality, both guitar & case, at this price point.

We live in an age where guitars travel halfway round the world yet still reach us well set up and almost in tune. This is not the case with the FGX5 Red Label I received today. The set up is poor and the action high. I can't simply file down the saddle because it already sits low in the bridge. This makes it a much bigger (and riskier) job. despite the high action there is still string 'buzz' so I think some fret work will be needed after I've adjusted the truss rods that at present has no relief. I will leave the guitar to settle for 2 to 3 weeks before attempting to sand down the Bridge and sort it out. Maybe I've been lucky in the past but I can't see me buying another Yamaha and I'm disappointed, and a bit surprised, by the Japanese craftsmanship. The pickup system has far surpassed my expectations. The plugged in tone is amazing! Whether on the the piezo pickup alone or blending in all the mic, the plugged in tone sounds great. The acoustic tone is exactly what you would expect a 30+ year old (even though it's not) mahogany b/s dreadnaught to sound like. Rich bass, prominent midrange and trebles that cut through the mix. Fit and feel is terrific. The matte finish feels real nice. For those looking for a cosmetically flawless piece, the hand crafted aspect of this will leave you finding a few marks on the neck where last second refinements were made, but these are surely not blemishes in the product. Resonate forever. The craftsmanship of this guitar is second to to none. The voicing of its individual highs mids & lows throughout the fret board is one finest i ever heard. Its a pleasure to play both amped or not. Play the next one you see. You will not be disappointed. But beware you are going to want it.
