Yamaha FG830-AB Acoustic Guitar Autumn Burst
An Upgrade to the Best-selling Yamaha FG730 There's even more to love about this FG830, Yamaha's recent installment in their hugely popular FG series of acoustic guitars. Back is the comfortable dreadnought body style and solid spruce top that players loved in the FG730, but new scalloped bracing gives this acoustic an even bigger low end and better projection for live and recording applications. The body's back and sides are made from rosewood to give the FG830 its powerful tone and warmth. And the satin-finished slim neck with rounded fret edges gives the Yamaha FG830 smooth playability. Classic tonewood complement New scalloped bracing makes the FG830 sound even fatter and louder. This gives the solid spruce top â a feature normally reserved for higher-end instruments â an expressive dynamic range that is even across the frequency range. And its ideal stiffness-to-weight ratio gives it plenty of power for full chords, punchy single-note playing, and riffing that never gets muddy. The rosewood back and sides give the FG830 its low-end power. You'll be able to punch through acoustic mixes with plenty of articulation and detail. Yamaha FG: the best-selling acoustic guitar series in the world It's not hard to see why Yamaha's FG series is a world best seller. They were the first to offer full-sized dreadnought bodies, professional-grade tonewoods, and fast-playing necks on instruments that were affordable for beginners and pros alike. If you're just learning to play, you'll enjoy the comfort of the neck and body, the low string action, and the full sound. Seasoned players who need a quality backup will love the detail of tone, the acoustic power, and how effortlessly the guitar plays.

I have bought a couple of (very good) acoustic guitars prior to this Yamaha FG830. In 1980 a neighbor, who served in Okinawa, sold me his 1970s model Aria country/western guitar which was an exquisite copy of a Martin D18. Many years later a Taiylor 614. And now the Yamaha FG830 for my son. Although it has a Rosewood laminate back and sides construction, the sound is exceptional. I intentionally avoided electronics for the sake of purity. This is a guitar which will serve him with a lifetime of fundamental playability and tone. Great songs have been written on lesser quality guitars, so let the future begin.

Overall:I donât play acoustic guitar all the time as I am mostly an electric guy but, when I do I have a very specific tone that I like. If you ever listen to bluegrass music you will hear this super thick booming tone from the guitars. Itâs a tone that a certain brand that starts with an âMâ is known for. Having owned one of their instruments in the past, the HD-28 I am very familiar with that tone. I wonât even begin to say that this is âjust the sameâ or âevery bit as goodâ because reality is that it isnât. The M guitar has a magic to it that nothing else has, the tone is so deep and clear that words canât describe it. I had to sell that guitar due to financial hardships and I have been chasing that sound ever since. I am happy to report that this Yamaha FG830 is as close as I have gotten. Since selling my M guitar I have had a handful of acoustics, some semi pricey and others fairly cheap but every one of them fell short of what I was hoping for. A friend of mine even has one of the âbudgetâ M guitars and it is not in the same league as the HD but, this Yamaha? It is so much closer to âthatâ sound than even the more expensive M guitar that my friend has. To start the guitar is very beautiful, the rosewood look of the sides and back with the spruce top and binding make it look very much like a 28 but, this one also has neck and headstock binding which makes it look even fancier than the ârealâ thing. The finish on the guitar is a deep gloss, even on the headstock. When it comes to looks this guitar absolutely has âITâ The neck is also something to mention, itâs so good that it deserves itâs own review. The finish is satin so itâs very smooth and fast, it doesnât stick to your hand when you try to play. The fretboard is glassy smooth and the frets are very well finished. I had no rough edges or protruding frets on mine. A little lemon oil on the fretboard went a long way and now it is such a player! I also wanted to mention that there are no uneven frets or buzz anywhere on the neck! The action was slightly higher than my preference but a few minutes with some sand paper took care of that. Now, on to the important part, TONE! As I mentioned before, this is NOT an âMâ guitar BUT, this is the closest I have found and itâs less than $400! The lows are booming but clear, the highs are crisp with excellent sustain, the midrange is pronounced and makes the instrument stand out. Chords are very clear and each note is decernable, clarity is a big part of the sound that this guitar produces. If youâre doing bluegrass licks those hammer ons and slides really pop on this thing. At the same time when you tune to D the low notes just boom with authority. The guitar just thumps you in the chest and has that âkerrangâ that a great acoustic produces. I truly cannot say enough good things about this instrument. IF you have $3,000 to spend you may do better with the big boys but, if youâre like me and working on a budget I truly do not believe that you can do better than this one. I have contemplated purchasing a mid range guitar in the $1,000 to $1,500 range but I then realize that they wonât top the Yamaha. The only thing I have played that betters this guitar is the high end stuff, $3k+ So, to summarize, if youâre on a budget, looking for a guitar that you donât have to cry about scratches on, OR if you just want a fantastic instrument at an unbelievable price THIS is your instrument. Yamaha has done such an amazing job that itâs hard to believe that they pulled it off! They have made something for the rest of us, something that fills the gap that we who cannot pay as much for a guitar as for a vehicle have to deal with. Thank you, as always, to zZounds for a wonderful experience. Fast shipping, and pay as you play!

While the cosmetics get compliments, its important above anything with the sound these instruments get.I am very glad I did not need to pay up so much more because the sound from my FG830 really to my ears sounds just as good if not better. It's fun and sounds so nice with not even half a year playing into it yet.So with the solid spruce top, and as I take care of it and age with it, I'm really excited to hear how it sounds as it "opens up."The tuners stay in tune no problem, there weren't any issues with finish, fret heights--- I don't feel like selling it ever. I know people learn on these and I am a seasoned player who can see that for beginners or experienced players also, you do not have to "fight with" playing this instrument at all. It sort of plays through you, in a way. It encourages you to keep learning. Hard to put down.Again, at the price, this is so fun to play and I'm really impressed.I play mainly blues, and acoustic rock that can handle strumming with some oomph, and songwriting on this guitar.
This guitar looks amazing but sounds ordinary. Behind 7th fret it is dull. Bass sounds dull with metalic. First string is too much loud. Plastic nut and sadle are for nothing. Only elixir strings fit it well. It is good guitar but overrated. Materails were not dry and two or three years it did not give a sound wanted. Now it is better but first impression was not so good.
Being on a budget, I have been looking for a new guitar that touches my soul when I play it and this guitar just does it for me. I played all the Martin guitars and yet I found myself coming back to this one guitar. The comfort of playability and bright tone make it sound and feel like a 600-dollar guitar. Also, the silhouette and colorway of this guitar are sexy. I have the natural colorway and it is an absolute trophy. Either way, it is an absolute steal for its low price. I would buy and buy again but since I can't, go ahead and buy one for me!
Sound:This sounds like a mix of the big two, Taylor and Martin. Itâs got the fullness that other guitars simply donât have in this price range. While it doesnât have the huge harmonics of a Taylor, itâs also a bit more lively than the Martins. What it doesnât have is that hollowed tin can sound that low end Epiphones have. They sure are pretty to look at, but this will please your ear far more.Value:Per dollar, this is the most bang for a buck outside the Rosewood J Mascis Jazzmasters or Ibanez RGs in the electric world. The Wow Factor:The appeal of this guitar is either for a beginner to learn on a stellar instrument. Or the best d*mn beat âem up campfire/poolside guitar for a pro. Living in Houston, I will only use laminate back and sides when playing ... MoreSound:This sounds like a mix of the big two, Taylor and Martin. My first acoustic was the pervious iteration, an FG730S in 2005. Guess what Iâm still playing in 2023? Yup. Still gig and record with it. Thereâs even a hole in the side that is taped over. The FG 830 sounds just as good. If you can afford the A1 models, go for them, or grab the TA version of this. If you just need a back porch picker that can take a beating. This is it.
Oh man, I can just go on and on about this. I have owned at least four other Yamaha's, two were laminated bodies and were great, one was the FG 150 back in the 70s, and then I became fortunate enough to be one of the rare owners of a handmade FG 1500. I had that for 50 years. It was stunning. Unfortunately the neck was too narrow for me and I couldn't play it so I sold it. I've always thought Yamaha were incredibly well made by a company that's an instrument maker first. I found this guitar at a lodge where my wife and I were volunteering in Montana and it was sitting out on a stand in a window and must've had 10 year old strings on it. I restrung it with some d'Addario's, and I was blown away. I currently have five Furch guitars, a handmade nylon string and TW o ... MoreOh man, I can just go on and on about this. And that's without elixir strings! Fantastic action, great tone, gorgeous, fit and finish. I mean we're talking about about a blind fingerboard here?
I bought an FG830 from Sam Ash while waiting for my Martin D-35 to be built. It sounded pretty good in the store, and at home in a quieter environment it was even better... but THEN I changed the saddle and bridge pins to bone and put on Martin bluegrass strings, and WOW! It made a huge difference, improving on an already great sound. After my Martin came and I've had time with both, I'll say - this Yamaha is just as good, but in a different way. I can clearly tell one has a layered back and sides, but both have lots of personality and amazing tonal characteristics. The top on the Yamaha is extremely well done with phenomenal bracing you can feel on attack. And the back is beautifully finished. The top on the Yamaha is extremely well done with phenomenal bracing you can feel on attack. And the back is beautifully finished. The whole thing looks like a more expensive guitar than the Martin at 1/10 the price, and is very rewarding to play.Obviously the Martin can do things the Yamaha can't, mostly because of its solid back and sides, but this FG830 is not 1/10th of a Martin D-35. It's just as remarkable, but different. In fact, it's easier to mic because the low boom projects forward more and is not as overwhelming to a microphone as the D35. I highly recommend switching to bone on the FG830 though. It really brought out the richness in this beautiful scalloped top.My only negatives - I don't like the 1 and 11/16" nut width. And, being really picky, where the neck binding meets the headstock binding looks a bit like an accident. Also, if you're on the fence about one, watch the YouTube video of the Yamaha factory in China. It was built by Yamaha exclusively for their own instruments, and those people really know what they're doing.
Just received and unboxed my tobacco burst FG830, and wow.First of all, looks. It is quite a bit different from the pictures. The pics make it look very red, with white binding. In person, it's much more amber/brown - think '50s Strat 2-color sunburst. The binding is much yellower, an aged ivory look, edged on top with a BWBW purfling. My pics don't quite get the colors right, either. The abalone at the soundhole is striking, with saturated colors and a lot of contrast - beautiful. The rosewood back and sides are much more visible and dramatic than the muddy brown in the pics. The outside layer of the back is 4 pieces with nice bookmatching. There's also a thin spruce end graft. The end pin is black plastic to match the bridge pins, and the treble side of the heel ... MoreJust received and unboxed my tobacco burst FG830, and wow.First of all, looks. No cosmetic flaws other than some fuzz on the braces that some 400 grit sandpaper will take care of next string change. The sound is very strong and sweet with great sustain. Strong bass, but not boomy or unbalanced. The intonation is just about spot on. I haven't played expensive guitars to compare it to, but it sounds every bit as nice as my Seagull S6 Cedar, if not better. Very much looking forward to playing. The neck is thin in section and comfortable. Playability is great on the lower frets. I haven't busted out my gauge, but action seems a bit high on the upper ones, so a lower bone saddle may be in the works.Definitely glad I got it.
