My FG840 is a keeper. These guitars are a fantastic value, believe the hype. The guitar is perfectly constructed, feels good in the hand, plays easy and sounds great. No, it does not compete with my Martin and made in Japan Takamine. Those guitars are worth a thousand dollars more, and sound it. I only say that because some reviewers of relatively inexpensive instruments make such claims. However, I truly believe you can't beat Yahama in the marketplace for the price. I had it setup and re-strung with D'Addario EXP coated phosphor bronze lights. Sounds terrific. Played it for 3 hours when I brought it home. Very balanced clear sound, with good lows, mids and trebles. I've heard you won't get a lot of sustain from maple bodies, and that seems to be the case here. I ... MoreMy FG840 is a keeper. Excellent hassle free and speedy interaction with PMT. Like most who spend money on a guitar it was bought after weeks of indecision and repeatedly reading the reviews. In the end I took the plunge - and boy am I glad I did. The guitar itself looks beautiful, the finish is flawless and has the wow factor. More importantly it sounds great with a sweet action that makes playing it a delight. I nearly bought a guitar costing twice as much - glad I didn’t as I am more than happy I selected this one

I have played for 50 years, some years of duo/trio acoustic miked giging. I have about a dozen acoustic 6 strings. I bought this Yamaha for about one tenth the price of a Taylor I bought a couple of years ago.The reason for buy this yamaha was so I could have a instrument that I kept out, on a stand in my music room and just pick it up and play it anytime. My expensive guitars are on a high wall or in the cases put away because I have kids and grandkids that are here often and are always interested in my guitars. I wanted to not freakout everytime they got near my guitar. For the money this is a GREAT guitar. I did a short setup on it when it arrived about a week ago. Playability, intonation, neck and looks of 840 much surpass any guitar I have played in this price range. The tone woods are good and the tone/sound rivals some very pricey 6 strings.I read some reviews (and remembered a FG300 I had in the 70's) I am very pleased with this purchase.

This guitar is much nicer than I thought it would be. My guitars are in storage while I am looking for a new place to live and I forgot to keep one out. I was not able to get one and have a few Martins and Taylor's. I did not want to spend a lot of money and always thought Yamaha's were good deals for the money. This guitar cost a lot less than those but sounds almost as good. Hard to believe it has laminated back and sides. The top is solid wood. The neck is satin finish, and the body is gloss. I give it a big thumbs up! :-)
Incredibly well made from what look and feel like premium materials. Sound is on the warmer side if you're after that jangly sparkly vibe - maybe different or thinner strings could solve that. Quite a big body so not super comfy but that's because I'm used to a parlour style. Ordering process and in-store attention from PMT was first class.
An easy playing guitar for a beginner like me. The rich tones in all ranges are what I would expect in a much more expensive guitar. This guitar has not been professionally set up yet and can not wait for it to get a few years in age after the set up. I'm expecting a real winner and keeper here.
I forgot to mention in my previous review that the scale length listed above in the features is wrong. It shows 24.84. inches. According to Yamaha's own website, the scale length is 25 and 9/16 inches. That's the same as the FG800,830, etc. This is not a short scale guitar.
First time purchasing and dealing with this store. Would advise anyone with a music background to entertain yourself and visit. We bought the above guitar for our son.The service is top notch. Plenty of informative and courteous help. My of all the guitar was a absolute hit this Christmas. Also had a case ordered by sister-in-law for him from the same store. I am sure he will be back
I chose this model because of the flame maple back, which gives a slightly brighter tone. The sound is still warm and full, but cuts through in a pleasing way.The guitar is immaculate. I have never owned a Yamaha acoustic guitar before, but the reports of high quality from the build to the finsh are all true. A very nice guitar.
Bought this one and love it. I had it setup by a really good luthier for $100 as I wanted to lower the action. It was bright but kind of thin so I put on some Ernie Ball aluminum bronze and got a lot more sustain out of it. It may not be a Martin but it punches above its price point
