I think it is easier to play than any of the many other guitars I own or have owned. Only a slight touch to the strings produces beautifully clear tones. The bass is not as strong as some guitars but I have become accustomed to that and don't hear it any longer. It has a beautifully balanced tone. I had read reviews saying the 1 3/4 inch neck of this guitar is slightly smaller than that measurement. I only buy 1 3/4 inch neck guitars and this neck has not been at all difficult to play. The back of the neck is fairly flat which I find very comfortable for my hand. The guitar surprisingly is louder than other small bodied guitars I own. I would certainly make this purchase again and highly recommend this guitar. It is fun to play and I find myself choosing to play it over others I have.

Better than a Gibson, Martin or Taylor that cost double

I've owned a 70's Gibson Hummingbird and many Martins including an OMC1E which was my all time favorite. This LS16M easily outperforms the Gibson or the Martin because the sound is better, quality is nicer and it feels so light and fast. I LOVE the neck even better than the OM neck which I typically prefer. The sound unplugged is heaven. It literally feels and sounds like an instrument that costs 2 grand. No clue what the reviewer is saying about neck dive. Balances great for me even with mediums.

I also have an LL16 with a bigger body. Both have a very refined sound. Unsurprisingly this smaller guitar doesn't quite have the depth or volume of sound of it's larger relative but it does have a nice refined "voice" that works well with my vocals. It is also portable and easier to manage. I have chosen to play and record with these rather than more expensive big name alternatives. I like the pickup system and prefer to use an external pre-amp so this set up suits me. No complaints, only praise for the product.

It's okay
30 January 2016

I had high hopes for this guitar but ended up returning it. First it is very neck heavy. When playing in a sitting position it doesn't balance above your leg with the center of gravity being somewhere between the 7th and 12th fret. I didn't care for this. Secondly, and I don't know if it is the body shape (I'm used to dreadnoughts), but there was not much in the way of bass response. When fingerpicking the other notes were fairly balanced but bass lines seemed thin and lacking to me. I ended up returning this one and went with a taylor 210 instead.

LS16 review

I use this guitar to teach with, and play finger style solos. I replaced the plastic nut and saddle with bone. The guitar was very hard to adjust. It took many tries to get the truss rod adjusted and the relief just right. The truss rod seemed to work backwards. I actually had to loosen it to flatten the fretboard. BUT, when I finally arrived at the point I liked, the guitar played quite nicely. The trebles are clear and clean, the midrange is very good. The bass, especially at the 3rd fret on the 6th string is disappointing. It just does not have the life and the resonance the rest of the guitar has. The bracing may be a bit heavy for an OM sized guitar. The finish could be thinner, but is very well done. I believe the LS16 is, in it's price range, a fine finger style guitar. A great student instrument. One more thought, perhaps the LS16Could be offered without the pick guard attached, but in the case so the buyer could have it applied by a qualified technician.

Rich and Consistant Sound

I really enjoy this guitar and really was not sure if I wanted a Taylor or a Martin. I had a parlor model I bought the year before so I had Yamaha was on my mind. I bought a Breedlove also and played it, but this guitar is just smooth and produces the sound I was looking for. I was not sure a Japanese guitar would have the same background as an American company. I just thought this was I could learn, use, play and enjoy. It makes you want to pick it up. They say it is a best for finger style, but I am pretty much a pick style based on my experience and it sound great and in some case I will use the side of the pick to give less of a sharp sound. I went out and bought a LS36 also after I had been playing for awhile, I come back to the LS16 every time because like I ... MoreI really enjoy this guitar and really was not sure if I wanted a Taylor or a Martin. Sounds and looks amazing, rough frets
26 April 2021

The sound from this guitar is phenomenal, YouTube really doesn't do it justice. The neck is lovely and the whole guitar looks beautiful. The only downside is that the frets came quite rough. Even when adding vibrato to notes you can hear the string scratching against them. I'm sure this will be sorted easily with a fret polish though.

Surprisedly good playability and sound

It is a beautiful instrument that play as good as some Martin I have tried, even better if you consider volume and clarity. The neck is very well designed and the string are well spaced (especially for big fingers guy like me!)The piezo, connected through a good preamp (I use the Boss VE-8), sound very convincing. The missing 2nd strap button and the use of cheap plastic for capo and saddle are minor cons.

Took Patience -- but it paid off
19 October 2016

Opened the box when it arrived; then opened the case; then unwrapped the guitar from the shroud in which it had been wrapped at the factory. Tuned it up and was instantly disappointed. Sounded flat and lifeless. Gave it a week or so to sit on the couch and breathe. It came back to life. Very happy with the build, the look, the feel, and the sound. Initially, planning to return it to MF -- now after it had a chance to come back, will not do so. Thanks, MF! I'm proud of myself, too, for exhibiting the patience needed to give this fine instrument a chance.

Yes another 5 star review
24 February 2023

I went through a lot of guitars to find this one. As guitarist who primarily plays finger-style this guitar is just what I needed, almost. Almost because what I really need is the LS56 but that's another story. If you are looking for a well balanced finger-style guitar that is made of all solid wood and great value then this guitar is a must have. Tone wise it exactly what it needs to be. Strong mid range, crisp high and just enough bass. It's not a dreadnought and was never meant to sound like one. Note separation is great and it even sounds pretty good when strumming. Perfect for recording and comfortable to play. One day I might replace this guitar but only with a LS36 or LS56.
