The MODX is an immediate joy, superb sound and it’s great on the studio or live, specially one nighters; it weights almost nothing, all the positives are: the weight and size, for transport it is awesome, the big color screen makes it a breeze to get around and navigate the different settings, the sounds are top notch. They are amazing and you can import your own samples with a USB thumb drive, I sampled some sounds from Omnisphere and have them within my live sets ( no more carrying a laptop) the keyboard also is very attractive looking all black almost with an attitude. And... it functions as a Audio Interface using the inputs and a USB cable. Pair it with Cubasis for the iPad and you’ll be in studio writing heaven. The negatives: NONE!Well... Easily the best sub £1k synth currently. Those who know already know its pros and cons, and can research if you don't. Build quality is ok; though take care when gigging and packing away, and get a hard case. The keybed is so-so; 61 switches basically, black keys appear tapered, their contact surface area definitely less than a piano (say), innards visible through them. Emotive-wise, more a 2nd keys than a main instrument. Sounds are great. Interface is also great; a learning curve as to be expected but quite easy to handle if you're familiar with other synth engines. (Touchscreen is one-dimensional though - so you'll have to get used to poking, a lot.)

Very complicated to set up owing to an enormous set of options, parameters and capabilities, but the time spent learning it will reward. The onboard sounds are as good if not better than the most expensive software samples you can buy. Add to that an onboard audio interface with 10 virtual inputs and flexible audio/midi routing you are getting an amazing machine at a price that is a fraction of the Montage it is based on, with almost identical specs where it matters. It is also very light and easy to carry. It's probably the finest synth/workstation for the price that Yamaha has ever produced and is as revolutionary today as the legendary DX7 was in its time. After owning many Yamaha synthesizers & workstations I was quite satisfied with the MODX6+. Loads my old Motif XF & MOXF6 files & writes them to internal flash. The quality of the performancesis impressive, perfect stereo sound!Plus the light show will blow your mind!Rik

Faulty Outputs
10 November 2022

Although the keyboard sounds great, the outputs are faulty and will often change from a stereo signal to just a left signal or right signal at random. The same thing happens when headphones are plugged in, when there is a random switch from a stereo signal to a single side signal. Was going to return it but instead sent it over to the PMT repairs team as part of the warranty that came with the product. After doing some tests, they classified the keyboard as being in good condition with no faults and sent it back to me.By then it was too late to return and now I'm stuck with a dodgy keyboard!

I am the owner of 2 legacy Yamaha FM synthesizers, the TX7 and DX-200 but had never owned any of their sample based gear. For years I neglected to get any of their AWM2 synths and missed my chance at getting the advanced FM, FS1R.After playing the MODX6 at the Sam Ash store in Cherry Hill, NJ for 10 minutes I knew that I would get it one day. Well that day has arrived and boy am I sorry that I waited.Although I would probably be be happy with the quality of the pianos alone, having all of the other type quality samples that Motif and Montage players have had for years is awesomely fantastic! The addition of the 8 operator FM-X engine at this price point made this purchase a no-brainer.Add to that the sequencer, arpeggiator, the Super Knob and a host of other ... MoreI am the owner of 2 legacy Yamaha FM synthesizers, the TX7 and DX-200 but had never owned any of their sample based gear. MODX raises the bar
24 January 2019

Overall:I'm a professional keyboardist and longtime Yamaha user. I've owned the S-90 and currently have a MOXF8 and MX-61. I bought the MODX6 to replace the MX-61 and I'm blown away by the huge leap in sound quality. Perhaps best of all is that Yamaha finally--FINALLY--made a user friendly board. The video interface is very intuitive and I figured out the basic navigation in just minutes. The sound quality is not just a little better than my MX-61, but a huge improvement. Everyone in my band commented on the difference. The build quality is much better than the MX-61. The buttons on the MOX and MX line tend to fail, but I notice that Yamaha has upgraded the control buttons on the MODX series. Also, while it is light at 14 pounds it has a heftier, more solid "feel" than the MX-61. I'm a performance player and don't use my boards a lot to create new sounds, sequences, etc., so the bells and whistles don't have much appeal to me. (Probably why I don't own a Nord, although they are great instruments) That said, this board is capable of a lot. For a sub-$2000 synth this thing is loaded and sounds great. Yamaha hits a home run. Now I'm anxious to replace my MOXF8 with the MODX8.

Powerful yet intuitive
8 December 2022

Opening the box I was delighted the look of the workstation and its light weight is impressive. Although being made of plastic it seams very solid and not "cheap". Plugged in the power and outputs to my mixing desk and instantly impressed by the factory sounds. The keys are "synth" style light but don't feel cheap probably not good enough for a real pianist but great when that's what your expecting. There is a real wealth of sounds ,drum kits, arpeggios and the intuitive nature of the workstation keeps interest high. The pre set sounds can be instantly tweaked. One thing that could be a let down is no piano roll to allow editing of the music you record/ create like other workstations. So far I'm a massive fan of MODX and is a fantastic addition to my studio.

Review of Yamaha MODX6 61 Note Synthesizer
24 February 2022

Ordered this but was so blown away by its capabilities, I realised I'd sold myself short. So I returned it in exchange for the bigger version MODX7. This keyboard is phenomenal and I believe you need the extras octaves to do sounds justice. I have reviewed the MODX7 too. Any serious keyboard player should have one of these babies in their set up!
