(137 reviews)

Yamaha has developed an excellent 3-way floor speaker system with bass reflex technology and a dual-woofer configuration, the NS-555. The EF series (EF stands for elliptical form) features wave-guided horns for the mid-high frequency range, PMD woofers (with polymer-infused mica diaphragms), and top-quality internal wiring from Monster Cable. This ensures maximum listening pleasure, whether for music or digital film sound. The speaker is presented in an elegant cabinet with a perfect piano finish.

Some people say they sound good, some say they lack of lower frequencies... So I decided to give 'em a try. I was planning to buy a subwoofer in case they lack of base sound. I have Yamaha RX-V573 receiver (I know it's old one, but it still fits my needs), and it has bi-amp feature (not bi-wire), and ns555s can be connected in bi-amp schema. So, they arrived, I connected them to receiver, turned the music on and...felt down from coach trying to lower volume and lower base frequencies! Oh, boy! The sound was so loud and so powerfull! I do not know why people complains on lack of base.. they have lots of clear base sound! My Yamaha RX-V573 receiver has adjustable crossover, equalizer, and tone adjustment (high and low frequencies). The lower frequencies were at 0db, I set them on -3.5 db and I still have a lot of base! I set equalizer 400hz to -6db, 160hz to -3db, and 60db to 0 db, and I set crossover to 60hz. And now base guitar and drums sound like in live concert, no barrel echoes! And I do not need subwoofer anymore! :-))) Oh, and, by the way, scene is wide enough - no complains. None of the speakers of this size and price range in the store can beat ns555. I was wondering why this speakers not selling in store? And answer is clear - if people would hear them they wouldn't buy anything else, but ns555s! :-))))

The dual bass drivers provide plenty of low-end punch, while being careful to allow room for the other components to do their jobs. The NS-555's instantly reveal secondary instrument sounds and nuances in backing vocals that seemingly were not there before. The definition is astounding across all analog and digital music formats, including streaming. These Yamaha's offer excellent sound staging. The separation provided by the high-capacity crossover system effortlessly makes room for all vocals and instruments. We initially researched Bi Wiring these, as they have 2 positive and 2 negative poles per speaker. Do not do this. Purchase a high power 2 channel receiver or amplifier and Bi Amp them. The results have been amazing. The NS-555's are power hungry and run flawlessly at the upper end of their wattage ratings. The words " for the price" should not be written in a review of this speaker system. They more than hold their own against speaker systems costing $1,000.00 more. Trust us, we have compared them personally. Yanaha's customer service has been strong and very helpful with set up questions. These loudspeakers should be a great addition to your audio system.

In a word this system is "phenomenal"! The NS-555s are not as good as the Dynaudios but they are probably 80%+ at 1/5th the price. They do so much so well that I am astonished at how reasonably they sell for. The fir and finish is very good, they are very well made! They can comfortably compete with designs at over twice their retail price. The only caveat that I will mention is that they have a moderately low sensitivity of 88dB 1W/m, this means that they like a fairly powerful amplifier. I would recommend a true 75-100 wpc to get the most out of these fine speakers. If you are considering these speakers I give them my very highest recommendation, they are worth every penny. They look expensive, but better yet, they sound expensive, smooth, suave and refined, amazing!

Never disappointed with these speakers, they outlasted my RX-V665.Now they are connected to RX-A780. Paired with NS-C444. They produce a warm home theater sound. Now listening to the Toby Keith Aerican Icon special, these speakers rock. I do have 50W Sub for a little kick.Plus two Atmos speakers. But these NS-555 speakers hold their own. I hope they last another 21yrs.

These speakers are in fact excellent even without sub (although it does seem that the current ones are not exactly the same as the ones i purchased- these having a lower frequency response and a different country of manufacture). The acoustics of the room i was using them in was quite bad and canceling out all the punch of the bass. Im very happy with these speakers and do recommend them.-the D.A. is corrupt

Selling for twice the original cost!
28 June 2017

Even selling now for twice the original cost of just over $300 for the pair...YES...just over $300 a pair, the NS-555's are a very good sounding speaker system that also sports a nicely finished housing simulating piano black lacquer! But be aware that over the a period of about 4 years of use this covering will start to pucker at the top and bottom of the speaker. But that has been the only real problem I've had with them, as they still deliver very good high end sound needing no sub-woofer regardless of what anyone else says!

Picked up a pair used for $60, best deal ever. Bi-amped them off our Pioneer Elite SC-71 in the office and with an Apple HDMI adapter playing lossless audio and they really rock in stereo mode!! They do need power at least 100 watts and they really excel in bi-amp setup. Very happy with them and the look black piano gloss, ordered a NS-C444 off ebay for the center and to complete the 3 speaker set.

[Rewarded Review] Beauty in The Ear of The Beholder

First, the audio: When it comes to audio, beauty is in the ear of the listener. I debated the 555 versus the 777 and purchased the 555. No regrets. When the Yamaha RX-V4A receiver in front of the speakers was fine-tuned, these speakers cover the complete range of audio output and do it well. When the drummer smacks the sticks into the rim of the snare drum, it is as clear as being there. The bass produced is clear, certainly adequate and not a muddled boom.Second the physical: The assembly is easy, the support foot attachment could be improved with pre-installed nutserts and machine screws instead of wood screws attaching the feet to the cabinets.
