A6A, The foundation for a superb Home Theater System

The A6A produces outstanding precision and definition across the spectrum of DSP processing (ATMOS to hall simulation). I used to be a stereo purist back in the day when older AV receivers introduced a fair amount of DSP noise in the signal path, but today the quality is much improved. Today's multichannel flagship AV receivers deliver a far more satisfying, interesting and emotive experience than even the costliest 2 channel Monobloc stereo systems IMHO. Here's a recipe for the best sound in Home Theater in a 12x20 room that won't break the bank. Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A6A powering eight surround channel speakers. Dual Subwoofers (12" minimum) in opposing corners of the room. I use all SVS Prime speakers and subwoofers. Just be sure all of your speakers have identical tweeters for uniform high frequency and preferably matching midrange drivers. Use 12AWG speaker wire (oxygen free copper) with 90 degree banana plugs and decent quality RCA jacks. Keep your power cables a few inches away from audio and video cables where possible. The YAMAHA's ES9026PRO will produce a clear, precise, stunning sound stage, you'll notice it immediately, and the ES9007S will complete the receivers incredible DSP driving the 8 surround channels in the A6A. The A8A replaces the ES9007S with another ES9026PRO, but I've got to tell you the ES9007S is no slouch. I heard sounds in the A6A that my 2016 YAMAHA RX-A3050 flagship could not reproduce with the same definition. My 7.2.4 Atmos reference disk really came alive on the A6A system. I attribute the higher definition to the newer ES chips and the additional wattage provided by the Emotive A3. The other noticeable difference between the A6A and the A3050 was its seamless integration with my other components, my NAS, Tidal, YouTube and FLAC file streaming. The A3050 had issues with the newest HDMI 2.1 and it was generally more temperamental because of its dated technology. The A6A loafed with everything I connected to it: LG OLED, PANASONIC DP-UB8020EB. And it handles all the different file formats with ease. The Music Cast App gives you access to every detailed setting in the receiver; I use it with my iPad.

Also, I don't like how limited the amp setting are when I choose 7.2.2 with an external front amp I cant also choose to have an additional external amp setting it still allows you to use the preouts though.Overall great system but its overpriced like everything else these days, if it wasn't for the balanced inputs I would have probably made do with my Marantz or waited for the newer Marantz receivers to go on sale.

Then the front panel display has been reduced to a barely informative small panel. They've taken away front panel access to hook up a temporary source. There is limited ability to re-assign sound inputs to video. There is only one component video input. When paired with the DefTech BiPolar speakers in a 5.2.4 system, this receiver creates a dome of theatrical escape. The initial setup took a bit of love to get dialed in. I’m not overpowering a less powerful receiver to get that big sound.I am simply dialing in the correct receiver for my level of detail. The power is simply there in spades.Of course this is not for everyone. Budgets are budgets. But, I am so happy I invested in one that will be with me for several years.

Impressive Sound, Power and Features

Really nice but has some bugs.
16 February 2023

I have replaced my Onkyo receiver which was about 5 years old. There are many features of this receiver, enough that will get your head spinning. Manual is a PDF download, would have preferred an actual manual. I have Amazon Fire cube connected and run most of the system with that. There are some bugs besides the usual Alexa bugs. Sometimes it goes to the wrong device. With the Apple TV I have had no issues and not sure if it is an apple update or another update the TV now sometimes has issues playing video from the Apple TV. It goes to a green scrambled screen and sometime bounces between that and normal picture back and forth. Stopping the movie and restarting seems to fix the issue most of the time. The cables are all new and worked fine up until a week or two ... MoreI have replaced my Onkyo receiver which was about 5 years old. The cables are all new and worked fine up until a week or two ago. All devices are plugged into the receiver then go into the TV except XBOX X. I have a playstation 5 going through the receiver. Sometimes when playing a movie from what ever device the volume indicator pops up as if I hit the remote but I did not. It usually does it after a minute or two of playing something on the screen. I would have preferred dedicated buttons for the devices rather than toggle left or right on the remote to go through the inputs. That may be what is causing issues with Alexa picking up the devices. I have had to unplug the receiver a time or two in two months to fix the receiver not responding to commands from the Yamaha remote, volume would not work one time and another time would not respond to the remote. I have Apple TV, Sony PS5, Xbox X, Blu Ray player, Amazon Fire TV Cube and a few more devices connected. The calibration in the room is really good. I have two subs and have 5 surround speakers and 4 Atmos speakers in the room. A few of the speakers were listed as being further away than they were. The surround and Atmos movies sound phenomenal. The receiver gets really loud. However although listed at 150 watts only is true of listening in 2 channels.

Stick with Yamaha - that gorgeous warm, flat sound
15 February 2023

After buying the Onkyo TX-RZ50, the Denon AVR-X4700H, and then the Arcam AVR21, all returned, we bought the Yamaha RX-A6A - the best purchase ever! The Onkyo was too thin sounding & the power plug fit loosely on the unit. The Denon had zero musicality and was also thin sounding. The Arcam was very forward vocally - too much so, but was built like a tank - I would reconsider the Aracm if our room was much bigger as it handled movies very well.We opined on "why we just couldn't upgrade our existing Yamaha RX-V3900 with Dolby Atmos, etc. and sound just as good?" Once we purchased the Yamaha A6A our wish came true! The A6A sounded just like our original Yamaha but with much more accuracy and that warm, amazing sound! Upgrade From A4A To Add Rear Height
12 January 2023

Have the A4A and should have bought the A6A to begin with. Atmos is encoded for front and rear height to get the panning effect we all know so well with DD/DTS. This makes a pretty big difference with spatial awareness. Auro 3D allows for up mixing of DD streaming sources for a larger sound field that brings a large library of streaming content to life. The smartphone app and more so the web editor for adjusting the unit is fantastic. Being able to directly access settings without going through menus or needing the TV to adjust parameters is sweet! Appreciate the manual EQ for all speakers.Would be nice to have the center spread function for surround in music. Appreciate the manual EQ for all speakers.Would be nice to have the center spread function for surround in music. I understand this may be a licensing issue but other manufacturers have reimplemented this feature after pulling it. Also, there is an annoying sound delay when surround content is being played. No big deal when starting a movie but if a movie is paused, the delay makes you miss dialog. It's like the receiver is analyzing the signal every time. It's about 2 seconds for Atmos content. If this is the reason would be nice to have a feature lock into Atmos or DD/DTS so you wouldn't lose dialog after a pause and being forced to rewind. My understanding of the new chipset in the latest Aventage line should allow for many enhancements to be made through firmware updates...This is my 4th Yamaha in 4 decades and the experiences have been great! I liked Onkyo's I've had in the past but reliability has hurt that relationship for me.

What an AV Amp!

My old reference Yamaha AV amplifier failed after 25 years so I called Richer sounds Watford branch for a demo between the award winning Denon 3700 and the Yamaha A4A, they booked me in that afternoon. I’m not sure what these media people are listening too but there was a clear and obvious winner to me and the salesperson Sam. The Yamaha, it provides a much better soundstage, richer tones, plenty of bass with clear mid and high’s. The Denon sounded soulless, non immersive and meek by comparison. Don’t get me wrong, it had good mid and high’s but average everywhere else. Sam ordered the A6A to be delivered next day to my address and said I could test the amp within my own home setup and no pressure to buy. He obviously knew the larger A6A version would surpass what I had already heard and would be keeping the unit.I also got £100 of interconnects within the deal due to a promo richer sounds we’re running at the time, I opted for the Chord shielded after taking advise from the store. All in all a great experience, good value for money, sound advise and great customer service as alwaysThe booked me in the same day and against all media reviews the Yamaha was

Yamaha did not deliver

I love Yamaha but this receiver did not deliver on the 8k or 4k120 claims promised and advertised. Yamaha has advised that there is an updated board for units that were manufactured without right part but this is a major inconvenience. The sound quality is spectacular but not enough to salvage this unit. The control are absurdly complicated, for instance, you cannot directly access specific inputs as with previous generation Yamaha receivers. Instead, you would need to scroll through several inputs to find the right one. Lastly the LCD screen on the front from my perspective is too small. This depends on your sitting distance but I imagine the majority of customers who buy such a powerful unit do not sit right in front of it so they can read this screen. I am not sure the value of such a large volume knob in the middle of the unit. In my view, increasing the size of the screen has a practical use case for the operator.
