Audio quality first rate for the price

Used with new Samsung 64" plasma with all HDMI connections to TV as well as Sony BRP, Roku, Channelmaster OTA DVR. Speakers are Energy Take Classic 5.1 and the sound is pretty amazing from the little Energys and that is also a function of the quality of the Yamaha - Very happy with the combination and no plans to upgrade either the Yamaha or the Energys. Room is approx 15x22 with panel on long wall and front channels within 1" of TV side frames and beneath. The auto equalizer mic/system apparently works quite well and is very easy to set up - have fun with it!

We just purchased a new TV and my previous receiver wouldn't pass through the 3D. I had a 4 year old Sony STR-DG 920 and I was never pleased with the performance. I wanted a receiver that met my needs at a reasonable price. I did research on the web and it was clear which receiver to purchase. Not having a Yamaha of any type previously was no concern. I had read over the years the quality of Yamaha products. Now that I have this receiver I can say awesome receiver over and over again.

Chose Onkyo TX-NR535 first. Difficult to set up, terrible sound, could not make the HDMI inputs keep working after 3 days. Returned to retailer and traded for Yamaha RX-V477Running perfect in 15 minutes of setup. Sound is awesome, can really hear the separation of channels. BASS YES!!!!! Airplay works great from I Phone I pad and MacBook Pro. When using Airplay you don't even have to turn the receiver on, it just start playing, AWESOME.Remote easy to use. This installation has wired ethernet connection, works like a dream connecting to network. Wish it had bluetooth, but AIRPLAY works great, especially from a heavy MAC user with all the toys.

Excellent value. Terrific Receiver
9 April 2015

Upgraded from a Denon 3805. I didn't want to spend too much $$ this time around due to upcoming changes with 4k coming out and the whole HDMI 2.2 etc thing. After looking at several different receivers, I opted for this as I would be able to maximize all of the features. It sounds great, airplay is terrific. I use it not only with my iphone but with my Windows computer to stream music. You do not really need bluetooth but would like to have the option built in. This is the first receiver for me where I do not have to turn on the receiver when watching tv. I have everything going thru this and it does not have to be on to get signals from my dvd player, dvr or other connections. Minor complaints.Buy this now, such a great deal for a great little receiver. I don't think you will find a better receiver for the price. I know you can all find it on sale somewhere.

HDMI settings should input specific
26 January 2015

RX-V477 is set up for home theater, then audio playback from analog or CD. The HDMI pass through allows the TIVO controller to turn on the TV and then the RX-V477, aka the unit. That's nice. However, the analog music source, when selected, also turns on the TV. That's irritating, but to my knowledge unavoidable, because the HDMI setup is for all sources, and two of them don't require TV. I'll note that when asking about the setup that I got one grumpy Yamaha tech on the phone. He seemed irritated that I made references to guidance from the unit's manual and there was a fair amount of jumping around there, e.g. see page 81 for more information about... I got help a week later from another tech after sorting out some of the setup details myself. Note that I waited 24 hours for a call back, then called again. I have a Sony receiver and don't have trouble with getting techs on the phone. I selected the unit because of the VIRTUAL CINEMA FRONT feature which works modestly well with surround speakers up front (my wife wanted less speaker clutter). I note for the record that Cinema 3D, when selected, does not allow trimming the surround channels (not in the manual).

Quality sound maker
30 October 2015

I wanted to eliminate some of the wire jungle that had sprouted in my home office, and the Yamaha allowed that thanks to the Airplay feature. Unlike some bluetooth components I have used, Apple Airplay seems to maintain the sound quality. That is improved even more by the Enhancer.I was replacing an older Yamaha that needed an Ethernet connection to my computer.Overall, the sound it great and the discounted price I got because the model line is being discontinued made it a deal that could not be ignored. (Moral of the story: Buy good products when they are being updated.)

Solid Receiver for Basic 5.1 System
23 December 2014

This is a solid receiver for anyone with a basic 5.1 system, a few HDMI connections, Apple devices, and ability to connect by ethernet to a home network. The receiver does not have a front panel HDMI input. You need to pay extra to add Yamaha devices for wireless network or bluetooth audio. Consider other options if you need or want these connections. The set up is easy enough and you have enough options to adjust settings if you are inclined to do so.The sound quality is excellent when matched with decent speakers. I like the Apple AirPlay option and the network streaming is acceptable. The graphical interface (on the TV screen) is functional but not outstanding. The value for price is a bit tricky since you are paying for the Yamaha sound quality and not the full range of features that you might find at this price point. I cannot speak to reliabilty as I have not run the receiver enough to do an evaluation. Again, this is a very good receiver for what it can do, but it does have limitations if you are looking for more flexiblity in wireless connections.

This receiver could be better
28 July 2015

I bought this product as a replacement to my VSX-60 receiver (broke down just after 2 years) in my media room. The controls are great, simple and straight forward. Set up was easy and seamless. The sound quality is respectable but not exceptional. Voice clarity is good however the low frequency signal output to the sub are a little lacking. The thumping base is there but a bit harsh to the ears. Even after adjusting the crossover frequency and sub DB levels, it just about reaches an acceptable level. This works for me because I do not this unit too frequently.

Works well
30 November 2015

I bought this to replace separates - a Video/Audio surround processor and Amp. It works incredibly well. I used the included microphone to automatically tune it to my living room. The results were amazing. The center channel was so much clearer. But best of all, I got great audio at low volumes. My living room has wall-to-wall carpeting which makes speaker setup very difficult. This receiver does the job incredibly well.

Yamaha RX-V477 Sounds Great
5 June 2015

I bought this unit to replace one that had recently died. I did a lot of research looking for a quality unit that would sound great not just as a Home Theater unit but also a sound system for playing my music. I love music and want it to sound as good as possible. I have even gone to great lenghts of buying and restoring some of the great audio recievers from the past. Pioneer, Marantz, Kenwood, and some Yamaha's. This unit really suprised me with how good it sounds. Movies sound great and music is better than any other unit I tried. Maybe not quite as good as my restored recievers, but close.
