I shoot a lot of portraits, and have used Canon's very-capable 85mm f/1.8 for several years with great results. I bought a Zeiss Milvus to achieve potentially superior results, and this lens does not disappoint. It renders colors beautifully, and provides stunning sharpness at even the widest aperture of f/1.4. Build quality is amazing, and make no mistake-- this is a hefty bit of glass. I had to purchase a Canon power grip just to offset the weight of the lens on my 6D.

I use this lens mostly for portraits. The quality of the image makes me wanna cry: details, colors, bokeh, everything is just perfect. The lens is solid like a tank. And it looks beautiful. The only two cons: - the focus confirmation on my Canon 6D (you know that there is no auto-focus here, right?): sometimes it's not accurate and you may get some blurred shots. But it's been less than a month, maybe I'm just getting used to it. - the weight. Man it's SO heavy. If you are using it with a flash on camera, good luck. But I really love it. Best lens I have ever used.

Why can’t other manufacturers build lenses of this quality. It feels like a jewel and shows a pride and commitment from Zeiss to build an all metal with rubber band for better grip for focusing. If you can deal with manual focus, Milvus will reward you with truly astonishing results. The resolution is simply outstanding, when paired with Canon R5, the lens easily resolves its 45mp output. Beside the fact the lens is extremely sharp, the true quality lies in a total absence of CA and nasty artifacts. Those who love Zeiss looks, the signature micro-contrast and beautiful color rendering qualities won't disappoint. Milvus is not cheap but I wouldn't say overpriced, afterall, it is a professional grade optic. I am. full-time professional videographer/photographer and I purchased this lens primarily for videography and I have had the opportunity to use it a few times now and I absolutely love the image from this lens! It creates a gorgeous creamy bokeh, and has a lovely tonal quality to the entire image. The build quality is spot on and feels like it will last a few lifetimes. The action and long throw of the focus ring is perfect and makes manual focus a dream.The only downside is the weight of the lens and the fact that the entire barrel rotates when focusing, so it is difficult to find a position for a lens support. Overall I highly recommend this lens and feel it is a bargain for what you get for the price.
Call me Mr Opposite. At 63, I am getting rid of my nice Canon L Zoom Trilogy and going all primes. Z Milvus 21, 25, 35, 85, 135. Why simplify?Quality of image is my goal. After testing for a few months, my latest image sold me on my decision. Using a single row pano setup, I stitched around 10 images together. Location was Pedernales Falls -Texas State Park at the Overlook. 800 feet of scenery at a distance of 130 to 250 yards. After stitching, a 13 foot print ready file at 600 dpi left me and my friends stunned. Unbelievable detail. Color was great. Not the same color impression as my Zeiss 21, or Zeiss Otus 28, but still testing. Very impressed.
This line of Zeiss lenses rivals the Otus line at a fraction of the cost. Optic truths revealed within this heavy, yet beautifully manufactured lens. I love the images it produces. It has that punchy, contrasty Zeiss look with great color rendition and nice bokeh. Be careful shooting wide open at f/1.4. You may only get one eye in focus on a persons face if they are not perfectly squared off with the camera. I've learned to stop down a bit when shooting faces. It's excellent for portraits! Heavy to handhold, but you get used to it. It might be best for some to use a tripod or monopod for support. Also, it is a manual focus lens. Keep that in mind when purchasing as they are not for everybody. The Zacuto Z-Finder Pro is a little bit expensive, but it easily detaches and hangs around your neck when you don't need it. I highly recommend it! I was torn between buying the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens and the 85/1.4 Zeiss Milvus, but I can say that I made the right decision. I am very happy with it.
I love this lens the moment I put my hand on it. At first I can't believe how heavy it is when I pick it out from the box. My 24-70 is heavy but this one is much more heavy for the it's size. Before I order this lens i did try some manual shooting on my 50mm canon lens but it's hard because you know the lens has its auto fucos on it. But now that I have this lens and been use it for a month now focus is even more fun to do. Up until now I still can't get over of how good the end result of this lens make. I have canon 50mm 1.2 canon 135 f2 which I love so much now this one. Now to mention the build quality. And by the way I love the weight of this lens I consider it as an image stabilizer. There is hardly any grip purchase on the section near the lens bayonet and not even a textured surface, just two tiny flat sections. It also doesn't help that the entire lens barrel rotates with the focusing ring making it extremely tricky to swap out lenses.Secondly, the focus ring on my copy is ever so stiff. There is a lot of inertia so when you're turning the focus ring it feels smooth and dampened, but making small micro adjustments is a royal pain. The focus ring will bind before friction gives way and starts to rotate, causing you to overshoot by a millimetre or two. It is so imperceptible that you may hardly notice it, but it is there nonetheless. My Zuiko OM lenses feel more smooth and modulated by a tiny margin, but what a difference that makes. I live in the tropics so there is no reason for the helicoid lubricants to stiffen or dry out.At the end of the day, I'm keeping this lens. The pro's vastly outweigh the cons for my use case. This is a specialised tool for the discerning hobbyist and it has no real professional usage outside of the studio due to its full-time manual focus controls. Autofocus is no longer a luxury so if you need it, walk away. But as what stick is to automatic, there's simply nothing like the Milvus experience.
Nailing focus is tricky, but easier with mirrorless. When focus is hit, this lens resolves more than what I thought my camera was even capable of. BEAUTIFUL.Focus ring spins what feels like forever. Wish it was maybe 2/3 of what it is.Still, I can’t find a reason to pick this over the (still great) Canon 85mm 1.4 IS.
