Zeiss Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras

(33 reviews)

The Planar T 1.4/85 ZF-lens is a short, high speed telelens for the exacting SLR photographer. It provides an unusually bright and clear image in the finder. Even at full aperture, it delivers top image quality. Its angle of view and exceptional performance make the Planar T 1.4/85 ZF the lens of choice for portraiture on location or in the studio. Its shallow depth of field at wide apertures allows the use of selective focus to emphasize the primary subject by defocusing the background. The lens's bokeh (the imaging of out-of-focus zones), resulting from optical design and the 9-blade iris, is outstanding. Geometrical distortion is imperceptibly low, allowing high quality documentation photographs, both analog and digital.

This was my first MF lens that i had yearned to get for quite some time and needless to say, i'm very happy that i have decided to buy it. The bokeh is truly legendary. This is a pretty fast lens and it is just a matter of time to get used to the manual focus. The focus throw is excellent. Focusing is not difficult wide open, but it only takes time to get used to very shallow depth of field. Stopped down to F/2, the sharpness is unmatched and the color rendition is something that you crave for. I was little apprehensive about the focus ring and throw before i got this lens to hand but trust me, the focusing is very smooth and damped. This lens stays on my cam for almost 80-90% of the time and i have got so used to manual focusing that i've started MF on my AF lens ... MoreThis was my first MF lens that i had yearned to get for quite some time and needless to say, i'm very happy that i have decided to buy it. That too only in heavy crops. You can find some sample images with this lens below please check Carl Zeiss 85mm F/1.4 set@

What can I say about this that hasn't already been said? EXCELLENT! SUPERB! Yes it is heavy and expensive (but so are all Zeiss lenses) so you just have to deal. The trade off is worth it. Initially I was very hesitant to purchase such an expensive lens but after I rented a set of Zeiss primes for a shoot, acidicmetabolics.com, I instantly became a convert. Whether its filmmaking or photography, they are all I use now and my 85mm has rounded out the set. CA is pretty ugly at certain f-stops, that I didn't expect to see, and I find it on my 35mm f/2 as well, so just do some testing and work around it. Shooting an event with Zeiss primes on my plasticky T3i next to a 5DmkII and supposedly superior Canon L glass there was no comparison, my footage definitely looked ... MoreWhat can I say about this that hasn't already been said? I know that's not a scientific comparison but wow, I was pretty shocked

Made in Japan but the German technology is there! This is my first Carl Zeiss lens that i purchased, and i dont regret it.As my late father told me, Carl Zeiss lenses are the best!I used this lens primarily for portraits in schools. Even though manual focus only, you can still feel the touch of its softness and clarity when focusing. Even though expensive i do not regret buying it especially i was able to get a discounted price of $150 from BNH. Thank you BNH for the great services you have given me for the past years.

Great purchase. Probably my favorite lens.
26 December 2018

Just a great lens. Color is awesome. Super sharp. Background is butter when wide open. I couldn't be happier. No auto focus, but that isn't a big deal to me for shooting portraits. Image quality is superb, especially for the price.

Beautifull micro-contrast and plasticity. This's not a swiss knife though. Defenytly soft for the close-up wide open shots. One stop down it's perfect for head-shots. Wide open magic on the mid-range. Also, girls love the design of it. It's beautiful to look at :D

Simply amazing

I am an independent filmmaker and I use this lens as a companion to a cinema lens adapter. The resolution is awesome; the quality and durability of this lens is a testament to why Carl Zeiss lenses are a leader in the industry. The out of area focus (bokeh) makes filming with a camcorder look like you are filming with a professional grade 35MM film camera just without spending the money that comes with it. The lens may be pricey but it well worth every penny and does more than it needs to do in terms of product life, consistency, clarity, durability, craftsmanship, and style. This lens also produces some really good pictures as well. I'm not a professional photographer but seeing the pictures that I've taken with it would make you think otherwise. The focus ring moves smoothly and doesn't feel loose or too tight. The weight is about 570 g, which isn't a bad thing, it just shows how tough the actual lens is. If you are a photographer, I recommend this lens. If you are a videographer or filmmaker and you are using this lens with a 35MM adapter, I strongly recommend this lens as it really does provide the professional look that you are trying to acheive.

Ultimate Classic Portrait Lens
18 October 2018

Zeiss glass is pretty much the standard for microcontrast and "3D pop." The Planar 85mm is no exception. I'm getting great results on my Nikon D750. It's also much sharper wide open than the Planar 50mm 1.4. Corner sharpness isn't great wide open, but for portraits the character and rendering of the lens is superb. Stopped down, sharpness is pretty good across the frame. This is a manual focus lens so I'd recommend shooting on a tripod in live view if critical focus is important.

Versatile portrait and landscape lens
24 November 2015

While many purchase this lens for it's wonderful rendering and bokeh for portraits it is also a very nice lens for landscape when stopped down. I did an entire Engagement shoot with the lens, something it is very suited for, without any lens changes at all. In landscapes it produces very sharp neutral images. Night shots have the contrast, color and sharpness with them. Most recently one of the pictures with this lenses was included in a local exhibition. I am very happy with it. At the price I paid it was worth every penny.

Wonderful rendering, sharp and bokeh
25 August 2015

I purchased this product for portraits and landscapes mainly. It is a beautiful looking lens, but the output is amazing. Color rendering is bright and actually "gives life" to subjects. The lens captures something more, in color, sharpness and rendering. This is hard to explain and better described in pictures, a few of which are attached. The focal plane is razor thin a large apertures, so be sure you are in focus, even a small difference can make one eye in focus and the other way out. So chose your apertures carefully. It's heavy and manual focus, but you can take action pictures by pre-focusing and careful panning.

You will love it!
19 February 2018

This has to be one of the best 85mm lenses from any brand. It envies nothing to the other 85mm f1.4's; be it Sigma or Sony. Super solid construction, balances great on FF bodies. It will last several lifetimes. I can't understand the reviewers that state that this lens is not sharp at f/1.4. I've been always more than satisfied with the lens wide open. They must have gotten a lemon. Highly recommended!
