Absolute best 10x42 binocular

They do.They have the same first rate optical quality as the Swarovskis and the same great stray light rejection as the Leicas. None of the three absolutely lack purple-green fringes at the field edge and some white stray light with the sun dangerously close to the field, but these binocs are at least as good as the absolute best.Other reviewers obsess over ergonomics or eyecups or having an extreme field of view or even won't fit in case with strap attached (which they actually do, barely). If you had zero to 100, these are a 97 (there's room for six eyecup detents rather than just 4).

Total satisfaction. And as advertised, my new bins surpass any I've owned over the years for the first half-hour before sunrise and the last-half-hour after sunset. One final real world experience with them given their focus range and ability to look way out and then quickly close in. Just after dawn I was viewing distant birds in a wetland on a nature Reserve, standing 15 feet from the water line. It is March. Alligators in Florida mate in March. I am aware of this and always position myself cautiously near water. The grumble/rumble sound of a big bull had me focus in immeditaely near the shore, easily spot a pair of gator eyes and move decidely, quickly backwards out of the social/distance/range of the gator. Maybe Zeiss designed binoculars originally to spot uboats/periscopes in WWI & WWII. I was able to quickly spot a reptilian threat of a nearly submerged G-boat if you will.

Fast to focus, excellent balance, great color rendition, nice capture on the objective & ocular covers. Since I'm rating the binoculars, I must say that I have ordered a new case and will be sending the hardshell clamshell case to a landfill; it's totally worthless as it is too small ( won't hold the glass with any kind of strap). These are keepers and my other binos will become loaners for guests.

Even better than I thought

I recently bought and rated these binocs as 97/100. But I've discovered they are even better! (except they still rank 97 because ofthe too-few eyecup detents).Today we have perfect clear weather and I was looking at some close birds. I noticed something. That is ... and as far as I can tell, no other reviewer of any binocs or refracting telescopes has noticed this ... the to me infuriatinglateral chromatic aberration (red-blue primary or green-violet secondary fringes) away from the center depends on the subject distance. Presumably it also depends on the setting for the focus distance difference between your eyes, which for me is zero so I can't check that.None of my top binoculars are designed so that this aberration is zero at infinity focus. Its something in the range 15 to 50 feet. For these Zeiss ones its actually zero at about 15-20 feet. Beyond that its green-violet and closer its red-blue. Still, at infinity its better than the competition. So, at one focus distance, the optical performance of these is actually truly perfect visually. I've done a bit of optics design in my time. Getting that and the small variation with distance is really amazing, and it really does costs what these cost.

I've Come Full Circle
31 January 2024

I bought my first pair of Zeiss binoculars as a college student to use while doing shorebird surveys on Alaska's North Slope in 1990, and now I decided to buy these binoculars in celebration of my recent retirement. With more time to dedicate to birding now, I wanted to buy the finest binoculars I could get. I've yet to use them for more than short local birding outings, but they're very impressive so far - they provide bright, clear views of birds even in low light, they have ample eye relief for use with eyeglasses, and they're surprisingly lightweight considering the fact they're quite long. They seem very comfortable in the hand, but some multi-day birding outings later this spring that will have me using them for many hours a day will be a better test of that.

Perfect, except for eyecups
29 September 2022

Optically and ergonomically this binocular is perfect. They are sharper, more comfortable, and lighter than my previous 10x42 Victory and 10x42 Swaros. But, the eyecups keep falling off. I have owned a dozen binoculars over fifty years - Nikon, Swarovski, Bushnell, Mirador, and currently three Zeiss and a Vortex. I have never had an eyecup fall off any of them. Never. The eyecups have fallen off this binocular several times and have often been found loose. I called Zeiss and their rep Everett told me I was not tightening them enough. He told me to tighten them more and don't worry if they break, Zeiss will send new ones free. I tightened them as tight as I could, far tighter than I would deem safe, and tighter than I haver ever done on any other bin. Solid all around but didn't notice a huge improvement
14 July 2023

I recently did a side-by-side comparison of these, plus the Swarovski NL Pure and Leica Noctivid. I am a very active birder and have used the $1,000 Nikon Monarch HG for 3 years. At the time I bought those, I found that the Monarch HG plus the $1,000 Zeiss Conquest HD were the best you could buy without going to the $2500 level.I had read some reviews comparing these favorably with the Swarovski NL Pure but for image quality, the NL Pure is on a completely different level. For me, I couldn't actually notice a huge difference in these versus my current Nikon Monarch HG or the Zeiss Conquest. For me, I couldn't actually notice a huge difference in these versus my current Nikon Monarch HG or the Zeiss Conquest. Maybe I don't have the best eye for optics quality but going back and forth between the models I just wasn't seeing a huge improvement.Another issue was with the overall size. All 3 of the models I tested were a little heavier than my current, and these were actually lighter than the Leica, but the larger size of them made them feel heavier when using. This might be a plus though for people with big hands, or when using gloves.I actually didn't have any issues with the ergonomics, they were pleasant to hold and build quality was decent, they just felt heavier due to the size.Compared to the Leica Noctivid, I did notice an improvement in image quality with the Leica being better. The Leica were actually heavier but a more compact size, and build quality on the Leica was maybe a little more solid, so I enjoyed holding the Leica a little more.So I guess if you're considering these I might compare to the Nikon Monarch HG and Zeiss Conquest HD at $1,000, see if you really do notice a difference. Or consider testing the Leica Noctivid at $3000 to see if they're worth the extra cash. For image quality though, the Swarvoski NL Pure are on a completely different level. I found them really annoying to focus though when going from near to far, but if you're using them for hunting or viewing at a more constant distance, the Swarovski NL Pure might be worth the extra.Compared to the Swarovski EL which are about the same price, I would definitely buy these. The image quality is about the same but the EL have the same horrible focusing mechanism as the NL Pure.

Unexpected fidelity and design

These are touted as the world's best and to be frank, I expected them to be so for the money I paid. But it did not sell me just how world's best these 10x42 actually are until an unexpected, but fortunate event occured, that proved these binoculars deserving of their title. I just received them and was standing in my yard excitedly taking in first impressions and looking at treetops, when an airplane came into view in the sky above where I was not looking for it. The image can only be described as perfectly lifelike, neither uncannily sharp nor soft. It really looks that good. These binos are profoundly stable, and very very easy to hold still. They are designed so the weight is in the back by the eyepieces, so your own forehead acts as a brace. You will not struggle to twist your hands backwards to press these to your face.I will be keeping these. Thanks B@H!

Worth every penny
16 January 2024

I contemplated buying these bins for quite some time. They are expensive (1/2 the price of my first new car) but worth every penny. Total game changers for my birding as far as the quality of the optics go. I was using 8x42 vortex vipers before purchasing the zeiss 10x42 bins and there is no comparison. The clarity of detail is incredible. It is a bit of an adjustment to get used to the narrower field of view for the 10x compared to the 8x when it comes to following moving birds through dense greenery but I would make the same choice if I had to do it again. So glad I finally caved and bought these!
