Your subscription includes a quota for sending text messages from the device, but every check-in (not text message) deducts from your quota, so you end up having to pay a lot more for each addition check-in or message. This is super deceptive and scammy. I should have stuck with the known and trusted brands like SPOT and inREACH. I will be returning the ZOLEO.

I have taken the Zoleo satellite communicator out with me several times including the Grand Canyon, the high Uintahs and Manti-La Sal. Each time I had zero cell coverage and each time the Zoleo sent and received text messages and GPS coordinates flawlessly. Maybe some people like a device that looks like a walkie talkie? The cost of the device coupled with ease of use and accuracy make it a clear winner. Im not sure why some others had difficulties. I’ve read numerous reviews from reputable sources and the Zoleo usually came out on top. The few reviews where they didn’t was usually due to preference and not performance or cost. I definitely recommend the Zoleo based on features, price and performance.

I can't just will my way or wish my way into an open field so that I could send in a check-in or SOS God forbid I actually had to send an SOS because they're never going to be able to find me. Zoleo support said that it tries a lot harder to find a GPS location on an SOS than on a check-in whatever that's supposed to mean, and in my opinion that's an absolute cop-out answer if I need GPS positioning I should get it regardless if it's an SOS or a check-in they're both critical and very important when you're in the backcountry. What's even more concerning about this device is I can open up my phone or look on my Garmin watch and it immediately has my GPS position so the fact that this device cannot even use those other resources or find the position itself and send it along with the message is a huge red flag for safety. If you hike in the desert or close to town where you have cell signal or in wide open spaces then this might be the device for you to be successful. if you actually hike in forested or canyon areas I would avoid this device at all costs if you value your life. I have since canceled my subscription and moved over to a Garmin inReach. Just from a safety perspective I strongly encourage you to rethink purchasing this device, they obviously have some flaws in their device technology.

Exceeded Expectations

It took a little getting oriented, and working with support (who were extremely helpful on the phone), but once I got things sorted, this device is absolutely awesome. You are required to have a plan to utilize your device, and get a zoleo email and phone number for use. Notes about activation: There’s an activation fee of $20 and you’re required to commit for 3 months. This is fine for me as I am out frequently during summer months. But heads up. I signed up for the lowest monthly plan for the time being.Once your device is activated, download the Zoleo app, and turn on notifications. Be sure to encourage anyone you are likely to wish to communicate with to do the same. App to app communication is the best use of your Zoleo. You instantly can send 1000+ character messages per text credit (if not on an unlimited plan), and also can see read receipts (double check mark). I have field tested this on my last several camping trips, and was able to get reception beyond cell range and stay in touch with my partner, friends and family — which is always a comfort when out in the field. The device battery lasts for days, and you can turn it off if you like when not wishing it to be on. By default messages are checked in 12 minute intervals (which can be adjusted), which is nice in extending the battery charge. Note: I recommend being still when you wish to communicate—find an open sky area where you obtain strong signal, and then do your comms there. Sending a message out of satellite range, will queue it for later, and automatically send when signal is obtained (as will any pending messages be received). I found a much smoother experience in staying still until messages sent, and then check at next strong signal area. If you’re deep in a forest canopy you’ll need to find some breaks in the trees or open areas near rivers. This is a realistic expectation for any satellite device obviously, since satellite signal still must reach your device. Keeping it clipped to top of backpack, rather than bottom — or finding most open space near your camping location — will ensure reliable connection. I seriously love my Zoleo and hope to enjoy this for years to come. Has totally changed my camping game, allowing me to check in with those I love, while also giving me piece of mind when far away from resources.

Great backcountry insurance - helped hurt hiker
5 September 2022

I have been a fan of satellite messenger and had a SPOT 1.0 device back in 2008 that I retired for the Zoleo. It is small and taps a great network. On my first hike this season, I just activated it from maintenance (the $4 per month mode) and updated software via satellite at the trailhead. About 1.75 miles in, I encountered a group slowly escorting an elderly man who fell in a very rocky section and who had a broken arm, likely concussion and who knows what else. A nurse had patched him up, but they had barely made progress in 45 minutes. I pulled out my Zoleo, acquired a signal and messaged the details to my wife at home and said to call Snohomish Sheriff for Search and Rescue. After some explanation, help was sent to the trail (no cell signal within 10 miles of it). An aid car and rescue team got him stabilized and down the trail from not far where I found them. It probably meant help for him 2-3 hours faster than if someone had to drive to a signal and explain it all. Separately, a good friend and his son recently became separated on a backpack trip and was able to use it to contact help after not finding him at camp 2 -- rangers found his son late the next day in very hot conditions (he missed a trail junction and kept going too far). He was pretty dehydrated but all ended well there. Again, it probably bumped finding him up 1 day. You never what what can happen to you or others in the backcountry.

I am shocked by some of the negative reviews. I bought this for peace of mind while solo hiking but also used it recently on a trip to Africa where I was deep in the bush with no cell or WiFi service - it worked beautifully, especially once I figured out how to turn off the sounds (which indeed are annoying). If you are looking for something that mimics your smart phone and allows continuous texting and instant communication, then you might need to re-think your outdoors priorities.

I love my Zoleo

I love my Zoleo. It allows effective and simple communication with the outside world, even in the remotest settings. The app interface is simple, minimal, and efficient - exactly what I want. The plans are affordable and competitively priced.I do believe that some of the negative reviewers for this (and in fact all) satellite messenger have unrealistic expectations. One must have a clear view of the sky for the Zoleo to communicate with the Iridium network. With a perfect view of the sky, I have found the Zoleo to send and receive messages over minute time scales or less - comparable to SMS messages over my cell phone's network. However, as the one's view of the sky becomes smaller - for example by increasing tree coverage - it can take longer to send and receive messages. This is because a message cannot be sent/received until a satellite passes within the field of view of the open sky, which happens less often when the region of open sky is smaller due to tree coverage etc. In fact, one can see the signal strength in the app fluctuate on time scales on the order a minute or so due satellites transiting across the sky! All this being said, if your messages are not quickly being sent/received, it is almost certainly due to a narrow view of the sky. The simple fix is to move to a more open space.I recently took my Zoleo on a four day solo trip in New Hampshire. I used the device everyday to send/receive approximately 250 messages. I only turned the device on when I was resting, cooking or at camp. During this trip I only used about 30% of the battery. I ended up taking an extra day to complete my trip and exited at a different point than I originally planned (due to a mildly sprained ankle and knee). Being able to communicate with my friends and family, and keep them updated, was truly reassuring for both me and them. I will not go backpacking without this device.

Sticking With The Inreach Mini

This is a good device and excellent first iteration. The device itself seems tough, lasts just over a week, and recharges in a couple hours. A bit of a bummer that its USB-B aka micro USB when everything is switching to USB-C. The app works very well and the seamless messaging between satellite and cell data (when available) is a nice feature for long trips since you can tell everyone to simply text your Zoleo number without worry of missed messages as you go in and out of coverage. Satellite messaging reliability has been good which is to be expected since its the exact same network Garmin uses.Ultimately though this device has some cons that made me keep my Inreach Mini. The main ones are that the device has no screen/UI built in and requires a phone to function as a 2-way communicator. If your phone battery dies or you lose/break your phone then the Zoleo becomes a 1 way communicator with SOS/Check-In only but you have no idea whats being sent back. This isnt great particularly with the SOS function which contacts IERCC which is a routing center so no phone means you cannot tell them the nature of your emergency. With an Inreach Mini you can use the device with or without your phone. Without a phone the UI is basic and composing messages is slow but it can be done so its a redundancy which is a big selling point in a safety device like this.My other gripe is with the plans. They are more expensive than Garmin for any type of plan, particularly compared to Garmin's annual plans (Zoleo has no reduced plan pricing for a yearly subscription). There is also an upcharge/add-on to add unlimited track markers and, more importantly, make the simple "I'm Okay" check-in message unlimited where all Garmin plans include the unlimited use of 3 customizable check-ins. I find the latter much more valuable since you can compose your own check-ins like "I'm safe, running late" or "Setting up camp, all is well". Ultimately the Zoleo really is only better than Garmin if you want to text a lot then you get something like their mid-tier plan (250 messages per month) and do app to app communication (massive 950 character limit instead of 160). If you're simply shopping for an emergency beacon and a device to send simple one or two sentence updates to family/friends then the Zoleo plans are quite a bit worse in terms of value compared to Garmin. In addition to the upcharge for unlimited check-ins, Zoleo has a higher minimum plan charge, requires 3 consecutive months of service at initial activation, and has a small maintenance fee to hibernate the account which you want to pay otherwise you pay the activation and 3 consecutive months of service penalty all over again. Point being dont just compare the up front costs of the devices because if you factor in the costs of the plans over the projected months/years you plan on using it that cost savings may go right out the window. In the end I do like the device but the requirement of a phone to really function as intended and higher subscription costs are a put-off. It would be nice to have a higher end device option with the ability to directly compose messages. In the short term, and at a minimum, I'd really like to see them adopt similar unlimited customizable check-ins and add those into the plan costs without the hefty upcharge and also roll out a more cost competitive plan structure. As it stands I could really only recommend a Zoleo to people who want to send long detailed updates or have lengthy conversations which is the only area it truly excels. I'm sure some people will find value in that, particularly solo hikers on a long thru or trip abroad, but for shorter trips or day trips the Zoleo isnt doing enough better to warrant its extra service costs.

Tough, Terrific Communicator
29 March 2023

I have used this device for about 1.5 years, and it has changed my perspective on 4WD and hiking adventures. I have taken my vehicle and myself much further from pavement than I did before having a satellite communicator. I did not have any particular problems with the initial setup. Users will need to read and follow the instructions, as the proper setup requires using Bluetooth and cellular/WiFi connectivity before doing any satellite check. Users will need to read and follow the instructions, as the proper setup requires using Bluetooth and cellular/WiFi connectivity before doing any satellite check. Enter contacts before you leave the area of secure cell coverage and make sure contacts have installed the app on their phones for best results. It is important to do a test of satellite communication outdoors with a clear line of sight to the sky before going off the grid. In the backcountry, if the user is somewhere with a large portion of the sky hidden behind buildings, rock walls, or large trees, the small Zoleo antenna may not be able to contact satellites to enable communication. Using the device for messaging can get expensive. I pay about $40 per month when the device is enabled so that I can transmit a few tens of messages per month + locations. Prices rise with the number of messages desired. Just using it for a potential SOS would be >$30/month, I believe. It is worth it to me for safety and regular contact with anxious relatives. When I am not adventuring during a month, I suspend service, reducing the charge to about $6 per month. Re-enabling service from this price point is easy. I have had good signal everywhere except in deep canyons and under a solid roof. Device has been tested in the Sierra, Rockies, Idaho, California deserts, southern Utah, Arizona Strip, and cell dead zones in the Southeast. Tents do not block the Zoleo signal. The battery lasts for days, especially when turned off between communication sessions, and it recharges quickly. The device itself has been very weather and fall resistant, and it would be quite difficult to accidentally trigger the SOS. I do wish it was easier to swap paired cell devices with the Zoleo. Very satisfied user.

My 23 year old daughter works in the outdoors and enjoys taking solo trips when she is off. She has had a lot of training but regardless, she is traveling alone. She took off for a 3 week truck camping trip out West last November and I did the research for satellite communication. Zoleo came out on top for her use. She wasn’t looking to be able to chat with people over it; only have something for emergencies and give her Dad and I some peace of mind. REI was our go to and we found one on her route and it was ready for pick up when she got there. I don’t love that she is forced to pay 3 months subscription at a time but it’s better than paying for it every single month like most others. She did a 5 day thru hike at Zion NP but the rest of her hikes were day hikes ... MoreMy 23 year old daughter works in the outdoors and enjoys taking solo trips when she is off. She did a 5 day thru hike at Zion NP but the rest of her hikes were day hikes through Arches NP, Black Gunnison NP, Canyonlands NP and Zion. She was looking for nature and quiet and she found it. The Zoleo was there for any emergencies which is all we were looking for.
