Best bang for the buck for single channel recording/mic/pre

I got this brand new for less than $70 for our good friends here at B&H. This sounds fantastic and is PERFECT for a single channel desktop OR field recorder. The low cut filter totally eliminated my computer fan and aquarium pumps. It passes the high quality audio right into my camera's input for no post processing video creation. You can use it as an audio interface with earbuds in for pro quality. And one bonus is it will do auto recording based on a decibel level you can choose. I'd buy it again for sure.

The cover to the battery compartment has broken already from normal use. This is a very thin, cheap plastic construction. Now I have a rubber band holding it in place. For the price of this device, I would expect something better. You also can't leave the batteries in it when it's not in use because the device drains them so fast. You absolutely need rechargeable batteries. You'll find this out when the batteries they include with the recorder die so quickly. If I had known these things, I wouldn't have bought it. So far, the sound quality is OK.

Great for recording live bands!

I used this H1n to record a live band jam, and it worked as I had hoped. No clipping because you can set the volume level using the volume dial. Sounds nice and warm. Definitely better than the mic on a cell phone or digital camera. I set the volume dial to about 3.5 to 4, and didn't even need to use the auto-level feature or the limiter. Later on, I can just normalize the levels to about -1 dB with a program like Audacity (free), etc. I also like that when in a hurry to record, turning the unit on is simple if you remember the process. Just slide down and hold the setting dial (which has a little groove if you can't see it or have trouble reading without glasses) for a couple of seconds, then release. Some of the other recorders out there are bulkier.

Happy with this purchase
26 April 2022

I record birds out in the desert. I use a more sophisticated shotgun microphone and plug it in to this little recorder. I bought this recorder mainly for the battery life. My old recorder was going through AA batteries and I just couldn't afford that all the time. This little unit plugs into a wall charger. Seems to last the full day okay. Sound quality is good. I have trouble seeing small print and the file info is a bit tough for me because my eyesight is bad. I also had to watch a youtube video on how to reformat the micro sd card. Figured it out though. Fits in my pocket and I can carry it almost anywhere.

High-quality and easy-to-use audio recorder
21 March 2023

Last year, I purchased the Zoom H1n Handy Recorder, and I have been thoroughly impressed with its performance. As someone who records audio frequently, this device has become an essential part of my setup. The H1n is incredibly easy to use, with intuitive controls and a simple menu system. The compact design makes it easy to carry with me wherever I go, and the built-in microphone provides clear and crisp audio quality. What's more, the H1n also has the ability to connect an external microphone for even better audio quality. The device also has a range of useful features, such as automatic level control and low-cut filtering, that help to ensure that my recordings sound their best.

It has its problems but I guess it's okay, for the price.
15 December 2022

I haven't had the Zoom H1n long but I've already noticed a few problems. To start with, it sounds a little tinny. Also, it picks up any movement of the unit itself, so I would only suggest using it for stationary applications. Additionally, the unit is made of plastic, which includes the screw mount, so you need to be very careful with the threads, so as not to strip them. And finally, the buttons feel flimsy, like those found on an ancient cut-rate cell phone. All of that being said, you get what you pay for and it was cheap.

More Than Pleased
8 August 2022

I bought the H1n mainly for recording some things off another device. I was hoping with the input it has that I would get clean audio and I am more than pleased with the quality of the sound it recorded. I recorded in the .wav format so the files are quite large but for my use that is fine since the quality is so good. The H1n picks up the highs and lows very well. I can't say how it records in the traditional microphone way because I haven't used it that way but I can only assume that it would do quite well. Are there better recorders out there? I'm sure there are but for the price this does very well.

Nice entry level recorder
2 May 2022

I want to record nature sounds, but none of my cameras or microphones do a great job of it. I bought the Zoom H1n to see if it would work. I tried it this morning to record birdsong, and I like the results. I could clearly hear the birds. It captures real stereo, so when a car went by, I could hear it on the recording moving from one speaker to the next. I tried one voice recording, and that sounded okay too. I'm not an audiophile, but I could easily hear the improvement between the Zoom H1n sound and what I usually get from my cameras. It's small but easy to operate. It's very sensitive to handling noise, but as long as I kept a steady grip, that wasn't a problem. I think it's going to do what I want to do.

Perfect For My Needs
13 July 2021

A couple years back, I got a very popular 8 track recorder and ended up putting up for auction just a few months later. I just want to hear how I sound doing rhythm, lead, and bass in my home. I don't want a 150 page manual that requires weeks of study to get proficient at. Enter the Zoom H1n. It doesn't get any simpler than this. Just arrow to the file you want to overdub, hold down the play button while hitting record, and you're off and running. When you hit stop, it automatically saves the overdubbed file as a new one. Perfect for those of us that have no aspirations of becoming a recording engineer. You can even adjust the input level prior to your project to balanced the sound. really easy to use and great sound quality without editing
4 November 2021

I have used to record my synthesizer and my guitar by placing it by my speakers or guitar amp. I am amazed at the sound quality and ease of use. I can record myself playing, offload the MP3s via USB and share with friends and family very easily. Battery life is pretty good. I was reluctant to record because I didn't want to have to mess with editing or music production. I like to just play. I am really happy with the sound quality, no weird compression or clipping. Picks up reverb trails but seems to keep out any background noise really well. I do not detect any noise from the device itself. No problems with 60 cycle hum, it actually records less than my ears pick up off the amp from my single coils.
