Zoom H1n Handy Recorder (Black)

Very good home recorder for small band practice. Reliably records voice, guitar and bass guitar. No distortion. Auto record level works well when recording music with even volumes, but where there are large changes in volume the auto level makes too much difference, so when the quieter passages return they are too quiet. You can use auto level or manual level. Lots of options like hi pass filters, track marker, wav v mp3 at various qualities. Very easy to use. The XY microphones are as good as larger microphones, so no real need to plug in an external mic unless access is difficult. The mics record in stereo, and pick up all the voices and instruments. Does just what it should

I'm on #2 of these, a first gen and a 2nd. Def improvements in the user experience with gen 2.These things are great. Crystal clear, well defined audio, super easy to use, weighs the same as a TV remote. There was a time when I recorded everything our group did, club shows, street busking, house parties, whatever, and this was perfect, fire and forget. It just lived in my bass case. On one occasion I miked up a live eight piece band, four (expensive!) mics, didn't get the sound I wanted at all. But I had one of these running in the back of the room and caught some excellent performances. The crowd noise in the (very) full room just worked with the material, and last I heard that was one of the tracks that got released.

1) regarding the headphone: it is of high quality & very suitable to me as a licensed HAM radio operator. It working very well with my ICOM7100 transceiver. It is exactly what I need, only headphone without mic ..... 2) regarding ZOOM H1n: it is beyond my expectation ! I searched for about 5 years for hand held audio recorder that support both LINE LEVEL OUTPUT & INPUT to use it with my Tecsun H-501x radio which is a meltimedia player also, & has Line Out & Line In ports, but has no built-in recorder. ZOOM H1n is doing exactly what I need. The ZOOM H1n has automatic record level option. But, big surprising (a very happy surprising) that NOT documented in user manual is that the ZOOM H1n will AUTOMATICALLY adjust it's output level when you connected it's Line Out port to In port of external device so that ZOOM H1n audio out will be match other device (will be at Line Out level if you connect it to Line In port, & will be at Mic level in if you connect it to Mic in port & will be at suitable level with headphone if you connect it to headphone so that sound will never be low [Line in], nor being distorted [Mic In] due to being high, nor injurious to your head [headphone])! Good quality with lots of features but no accessories

The only protection that comes in the box is a tissue-thin fabric cover, which was disappointing. The H1N seems robustly made, however, and it survived rolling around in my bag for a couple of weeks until I bought a case.Other things missing from the box that surprised me were batteries, a usb cable and a detailed instruction manual. For a beginner like me, the amount of features on the H1N is intimidating, so only including a guide to the basic functions was frustrating. Creating and managing recordings is easy, and the onscreen level monitoring helps reduce the chance of audio cutoff (there is an automatic feature for this too if you aren’t able to control the H1N while recording). So far I have only listened back to recordings using the built-in speaker (which, confusingly, doesn’t respond its own audio test), but I’ve found that voices are clear and there is very limited background noise, making transcription easy.Despite my initial disappointment when unpacking it, I am happy with the H1N. Even though I spent money for features I will probably never use (or understand), it’s strong build and intuitive display make me confident I will be satisfied with it for years to come.

But I sometimes need to support recording of two events at the same time so I purchased this 2nd Zoom H1n.I need a recorder with wide area sound pickup, and good sound quality, and with good signal to noise ratio allowing me to boost up volume in post processing when needed. And I need an intuitive user interface for setting up and monitoring recording volume. The Zoom H1n is perfect.Just the right amount of configuration settings (not overloaded with useless fluff, and easy to select and verify important setting such as recording format). Batteries seem to last forever.One important thing to note: the recording will not work with SD cards larger than 32G. This is not a problem since 32G card can record 10 hrs even with the highest bit rate file format, but you won't want to purchase a 64G or larger card for use with this audio recorder.

Surprisingly good sound

I was initially skeptical of the sound quality of the onboard microphone due to the overall build quality and the price, so tested this recorder in a variety of situations after getting it. I was a little disappointed by the noise floor -- the amount of white noise picked up when recording a quiet sound, but that's not a big deal, really, given the price. That changed when I tried something a lot louder. It delivered shockingly good results when recording high volume music. No clipping, even though I'm a beginner and had no idea what I was doing when I set it up. It sounded much better than I expected from a budget recorder. Definitely a solid purchase and perfect for an entry-level recording device to get you started. Haven't had a chance to use this extensively, but at an entry level price it does the trick for something I can just throw in my bag and fire up for quick field recording wherever.Something to be aware of before you buy is that the built-in mics are very sensitive to wind and bumps. If you're holding this while recording you have to be very careful or else it will pick up the noise of your hand rubbing against the case, headphone cable moving, etc. It does have a mount for a stand or handle on the bottom which might help in that regard, but you're definitely going to want to get a deadcat or cover if you're recording outside. works as expected. i purchased a Zoom R4 MultiTrak for my kid to record stuff as a Christmas present. While I understood the R4 was 32-bit enabled, i did not realize there was no way to actually change the resolution of recordings to be lower quality (8-bit/16-bit/mp3). The R4 will *only* record tracks at 32-bit float and the wav files are HUGE.Since I already had to upgrade my google storage seeing 30-40 minutes of a kid recoding stuff take up 2GB-3GB per 30-60 minutes made me realize I'd quickly run out of storage, so I bought this cuz now they can record at 256kbpsmp3 and record for hours without taking up gigs of storage. this recorder you can choose what resolution you will record in and is saving me storage space in the long run for audio sketches my lil ... Moreworks as expected. i purchased a Zoom R4 MultiTrak for my kid to record stuff as a Christmas present.
