Very good solid product.Took a while to get into the many features available on the device but more than happy with the quality of the recordings produced. Has come a long way from the archaic methods of recording in years past and such a small carryable device to use anywhere.

This thing is very simple to use and is great for capturing ideas and writing on the fly. I was considering the Tascam Portacapture X8 until I learned you can't use the metronome in the main recording mode for multitracking in sync. As soon as I gave up on finding something small to record and stack ideas and harmonies in remote locations this little guy drops. 32-bit float is an amazing touch for the price.

I have been traveling to LA and Nashville and wanted a recorder that is easy to use, convenient in size, and compatible with my Zoom R24 studio workstation while being affordable. The R-4 meets all those requirements and records at the same pro quality. It's a great addition to my production chain.
I wrote earlier about the practice recordings sounded really good. Took it to a show and a lot was happening around town thought it would be a great time to record. My wife was there, and I asked to press the red button when the show starts. She asked what else? I said that's it. DUDE, it sounded great with the built in mic. Of course, it's no studio recording but everybody came out clear. Still the manual that comes with it does not give it JUSTICE at all. OH' and yes, it is a battery eater, but it lasted our 2hr. show and still had plenty to for the next day outside of that I wouldn't push it It does so much more than the little manual tells you it does.
Do Not Buy This! I bought this as a backup to my main MixPre III as a recorder when we have 2 teams shooting on the same day. This thing failed me HORRIBLY as it has some insane flaws....1. The recorder WILL record over itself. When Recording & Stopping, most recorders create new clips. I found out, AFTER a project...this records over the existing file, with NO way of creating new clips, unless making a new Project? The fact that this can happen is insane and a major flaw.2. This XLR input is not locking, and is so loose, the XLR can slip out so easy.3. The switch to move from XLR to Mic is so soft and flimsy, it can easily be hit during handling, switching it over to the internal mics...with no visual indicator that it has happened.This product is downright ... MoreDo Not Buy This! With 32-bit float recording and limitless bouncing in a portable form factor, this is exactly what I was looking forward to owning. I have long been a fan of the Zoom performance-price fit. I am not impressed witht he feel of the buttons, but it's just a personal preference and I'll get used to it. :)
Got to say I'm very impressed. I wanted something small with excellent sound quality to record ideas quickly from the out on my mixer, or direct recordings from various electronic instruments. The results are outstanding - especially the bounce feature which allows you to build multi tracked recordings without loss of quality. 32bit float is impressive. Wish my Zoom F8n had this feature, though to be honest, the sound when balanced correctly is mind-blowing.The R4 is equally as good at line level, but not quite as pro sounding via the Mic pre Amps.Regardless, this is good kit.
