ZWO ASI174MM USB3.0 Monochrome CMOS Camera

(33 reviews)

The ZWO ASI174MM Monochrome is a monochrome camera that uses Sony's latest Pregius IMX174 CMOS sensor. It combines several features making it suitable for capturing lunar and solar images, high-resolution planetary images at long focal lengths, or even as an autoguider. The Sony IMX174 chip has a large sensor size of more than 13mm across the diagonal, high quantum efficiency of 78% at its peak, very low read noise of only 6e, and an extremely fast frame rate - effectively freezing moments of steady seeing. The global shutter and no fixed pattern noise make it a reliable choice. The camera's sensor has a pixel array of 1936 x 1216 with 5.86 μm square pixels, making the diagonal measurement of the chip 13.4mm across.

Convenient set!

I purchased this for my school's astronomy club, and it was absolutely perfect. We are in a light-polluted major city, so we are mostly taking Moon, Sun, and planet photos and didn't want to deal with cooling and power supplies and perfect alignment and tracking and all that. But I still wanted high resolution and I wanted the students to get some experience with filters and LRGB stacking, so a mono planetary camera with automated filter wheel is the ideal set. The learning curve was pretty shallow; everything worked right out of the box and even novice students were able to get quality photos quickly. Image quality and transfer speed are excellent—not a single dropped frame so far. We are very happy with the purchase!

I'm using this as a guide camera on a Celestron OAG. Works great and very sensitive. Easy to get a guide star or stars anywhere.

I use this with a Lunt LS80. The entire sun fits easily into the field of view, but significantly undersamples the scope with the rather large pixels. The big advantage for daytime astrophotography is the global shutter feature.

Good imaging

I have used the ZWO ASI 174 MM on my Lunt LS60THa solar telescope. I collected several AVI videos using the Astroimager software, follower by AutoStakkert stacking and RegiStax wavelet processing. I was pleased to catch filaments in the south East quadrant on 01/03/21. These were reported in NASA video observations and the coronal mass ejection was predicted to hit the earth on 01/06/21. I have sufficient data to show time dependence, but have yet to learn how to stabilize video on a frame basis, without stacking (which removes the time dependence). My main beefs are (1) the dearthof native Mac OSX capture and processing software. Great little camera

Have only had it out one night so far, with my 115mm refractor, but seems to be a great little camera. Can't wait to try it out with my C9.25.

Perfect for small APO Solar and Lunar imaging
9 August 2021

I use this camera mostly for Solar and Lunar imaging and with its ability to reach high frame rate and a global shutter it's pretty much the best camera in this price range for what I do. The sensor size allows me to get a full disk on a 81mm F/5.9 APO with space to spare so I can reduce the frame size via a ROI and get to 170FPS on the Sun and Moon when capturing.Great camera, software works well and ZWO keeps improving it.
