API Bacterial Fish Infections Remedy, 237 ml, (Pack of 1), 11H

(915 reviews)

API MELAFIX fish remedy is an all-natural antibacterial treatment that works to treat infections in fish. Common bacterial infections are open wounds and abrasions, tail rot, eye cloud, and mouth fungus. MELAFIX fish remedy also promotes regrowth of damaged fins and tissue. Product may be used when adding fish to an aquarium – particularly to smooth the transition from store to home – and if an infection is suspected, but not yet diagnosed. Some fish bought in pet stores are already carrying diseases at the time of purchase, which may be difficult to detect in its early stages. API MELAFIX fish remedy will not adversely affect the biological filter, alter the pH, or discolour water. Instructions Add 5 ml. for each 40 litres of aquarium water. For disease or wound treatment, dose daily for 7 days. After 7 days, make a 25% water change. Continue treatment, if necessary. For adding new fish, dose daily for 3 days.

Don't use in a tank with snails!!

I bought this for one of my guppies who was acting off and dosed the tank with the amount recommended and didn't remove the snail since it says that it is safe for invertebrates. Within 12 hrs my snails were putting out lots of slime and acting stressed. I took them out immediately and put them in an emergency tank and did water changes every day for 3 days. Unfortunately it did not help and they both died today. Up until that point they were completely healthy and active so that was the only difference. The shrimp in the tank are totally fine but please be careful if you have snails!

Excellent Results!!

I bought a beautiful betta from Petco. But just one day later I noticed that he was acting lethargic and sickly. I took him back to the store, and one of the associates there recommended this product. And it worked like a charm!! Just one day later, he was swimming around and acting like a healthy betta. I continued the treatment for 7 days as indicated. This product should be a staple for pet fish parents, and an overall good natural product to use when introducing new fish to your tank.

My doubletail halfmoon beta fish, Pablo, has huge fins and I noticed a hole on his top fin that got bigger after 1 day. I started used this and he seemed to be feeling better. 2 days later either he is the Wolverine of fish or the medicine worked because the hole repaired itself; there was no hole anymore. Just be careful with dosage. He seemed to freak out when I think I put a little too much in. His appetite has slightly decreased but at least he seems better and to not have fin rot anymore. Thanks Melafix

Generic Brand In Store
21 August 2017

I ordered this product online but chose to pickup in store & it's not the API brand! It's a generic brand by a company named Mars Fishcare. Disappointed! If the item pictured online isn't the exact one they have in store then there shouldn't be an option to pick it up. My plan was to use the API MELAFIX along with the API PIMAFIX (purchased elsewhere) since the company says it's alright to use them together. But instead I'm now using this generic brand of MELAFIX with the API brand of PIMAFIX which doesn't seem to have any apparent negative effects so far. But I'm curious to know if the single API brand would've worked more effectively & efficiently since it's made by the same company. Just thought I'd inform my fellow fish owners before they end up surprised like I did.

Is it working?
28 December 2021

First time fish owner. Have a Betta. The fish has fin rot and losing fins. I called my local Petco. They told me to use Spring Water and Betta water with almond extract only. In addition, I should be using aquarium salt and Melafix. I followed the directions on the bottle, removed the carbon filter and doing what I can. After the 7th day, I did the water change. However, I am still using the medicine. I am not seeing any results as quickly as the other reviewers have experienced. Don’t know if I am doing something wrong or if the medicine is just not as effective as I was hoping it would be.

KILLS PENCILFISH
21 November 2022

It is so irresponsible for API to not have a warning but Melafix KILLS pencilfish and I'm not the first one this happened to! I lost 5 pencilfish from using this and wanted to warn anyone else with pencilfish to please not use this! Shame on API for not labeling this!

Killed my fish
1 April 2021

DO NOT USE! This product was marketed to me as a cure for a blood streaked fin. I put a minimal amount of Melafix into the tank and within 2 hours my fish was on his side. I took him out of the tank and put him into fresh water but he is likely dying unless he can fight this. Prior to putting the product in the tank he was perky and swimming.

R.I.P. my Goldfish
21 May 2019

I recently purchased this based on the symptoms my goldfish had and some recommendations I found online. I treated for the recommended 7 days at 1 tsp for a ten gallon aquarium. My gold fish died today, the day I was suppose to do the water change. We saw no changes in symptoms or health during the treatment. I thought maybe I had misdiagnosed, but when I described the symptoms to an employee I was recommended the same medication only a different brand and was told the one I had purchased was effectively like pouring rubbing alcohol into a wound. Basically I put my already sick fish into shock using the dosage recommended on the bottle.

Re: Generic Brand in store

I just picked up and researched this off brand melafix that the other reviewers mentioned. While it looks like a knock off of the API brand Melafix, this is truly, essentially the same product. It has the same ingredients and is even made by the same parent company, Mars Fishcare. The only difference is the API version is about $2 more than this Doc Wellfish version. The reason most likely due to the packaging cost and the fact API is a more popular, thus, a more in demand brand. They can and will charge more for that fact. With that in mind, the off brand version is just as good and you can get a deal out of it, too!

Used This For My Cats As Part Of Conjunctivitis Treatment. Excellent.
12 December 2016

I gave this to my Cats one is a Feral Calico who I adopted and I already had a Siamese. The Feral Calico had conjunctivitis when I got her and I didn't know. She gave it to my Siamese who was an indoor cat. He caught it quickly, so I had to google to try to treat it. I put API Melafix Antibacterial Fish Remedy, 8-Ounce into their drinking water and also cleaned their eye directly with a cotton ball to heal the infection and it worked. I also added as recommend L-Lysine Treats. They didn't like the taste of the L-Lysine at first so I would mix it with the food and they got use to it. Now they are Right As Rain.
