A Terrific Watch, Even for Not-So-Active People

Fortunately, the orange "action button" and orange circle on the crown button are the only treatments that say "active person's watch".I was able to replace the trail loop band, which has its own orange coloring on the fastener side, with a third party stainless steel band that has dramatically dressed the watch up. The Ultra has a big enough screen area that I can see smaller details better than before. The screen is also much brighter outside than my Series 5 was, so I can use it in direct sunlight. I also set up the cellular feature, so now I can leave the house and still have data access and can make and receive calls. The speaker in the watch sounds much better than older models, so I can carry on a conversation in the car very easily. The battery life is clearly much better than other Apple Watches, which means I won't have to worry about the battery going dead during a long flight or after a day of very active notifications and text messages.I think Apple did a great job making the Ultra an attractive and highly functional timepiece, and I'm looking forward to the titanium and sapphire crystal's durability for the long haul. I just hope the company will support it for many years to come so I can justify its high price. I have another, more traditional titanium watch that's lasted nearly 15 years, and it's still going strong. If this one can last half that long, I'll be satisfied. All in all, I think this is one of the best and highest quality pieces of tech that I've seen come out of Apple, and I go back to Apple II days. Kudos to the designers and engineers who created it - it's truly a wonderful product and a great achievement.

They show scratches incredibly easily (see one example from my first day of wear in the pictures attached). Any time I have brushed a bevel against wood, metal, rocks, or even a plastic desk (which was what caused the pictured scratch), I have ended up with super visible cosmetic blemishes.I believe that this issue occurs because the bevels of the watch (the sharp edges) have been polished and shined. The rest of the watch is matte, which decreases visibility, but the scratches to the bevel reflect light and can be seen at any angle.I recognize that this may only be a significant issue due to my activities, but I did buy the watch because it was advertised for alpinism. There was even a panoramic of a ridge line inside the box!YMMV, but I do think that for alpinists and climbers, this is probably a 4-star product. With a couple design improvements, it would definitely be a 5.Final, long shot note to Apple: Please add a climbing activity to the fitness app! I want to use my alpine watch to track alpine workouts!

I own other watches, like Seikos, Citizens, Luminoxs, Timexs, and Casio G-Shock‘s. Though these other brands are all nice and high quality watches, you can easily get tired of some of the functionality, the way the watches work, as well as the way they look. But an Apple Watch can change its face in so many different ways, and you can add and remove different fields of data to suit your needs. The ability to make phone calls with it and also send text messages is great. I wouldn’t trade it for any other watch. That said, when scuba diving, I would still wear a dive computer, but I wouldn’t hesitate to take my Apple Watch also. I like the bands for the dive watch, the others are nice too but because they’re cloth they can get sweaty and that means there may be an odor attached to them if you actually use them the way they’re intended. Other than that, it’s fantastic. Give it a try! I liked it so well, I bought three of them as gifts since the purchase of this watch!

8 generations in, this updated hardware is a larger refresh in the Apple Watch world, but by no means brings anything too different or new for seasoned Apple Watch users. Rather, this is a more polished version of what you know and already love - just with a larger battery, bigger screen, beefier case, and more finer touches that just make it an all around decent watch. As a daily runner who’s currently preparing for my next marathon, is it going to replace my Garmin Epix2 w/ running dynamics pod and Polar H10? No - until Apple steps up their running dynamics and training recovery features (to their credit, the former of which is slowly starting to happen), I can’t recommend this for athletes who are actively training. No - until Apple steps up their running dynamics and training recovery features (to their credit, the former of which is slowly starting to happen), I can’t recommend this for athletes who are actively training. I also really wish they’d introduced a darker finish as well - the natural titanium with bright orange action button certainly makes the unit stand out a lot more. Also, while the battery life is certainly better than any other AW I’ve ever used and can last me 1.5-1.75 days per charge, it still goes nowhere close to the 15 days I get on my Epix2 (w/ all satellites mode). At the same time, it also does a lot more (and has an actually useable flashlight - c’mon Garmin), so it’s a matter of what you value most, at the end of the day. Red light mode for night use is just the typical Apple polishing touches that we have all come to know and love.Compared to the 799$ I spent back in the day on the SBSS AWS4, this is a very good value for the $ if you’re in the market for an Apple Watch, but again, it’s hard to recommend this at the moment for endurance athletes. I’m sure Apple will get there with the software; perhaps just 1-2 more generations and they’ll nail it.

Finally an Apple watch for me
2 October 2022

I basically wear g-shocks exclusively, unless I’m dressing up, so I don’t like small watches. I’ve always hated the small and almost feminine look of Apple watches until now. Now the price point is probably the only set back on this thing but it definitely feels like a better quality watch than any other series I’ve seen. My girlfriend just bought the new series 8 and that thing feels cheap to me.The large face on the ultra actually makes it possible for me to use it and the battery life is great. I had this thing on for 12 hours the first day and my battery was at 74% when I took it off (straight out of the box, never charged). The action button is a neat add-on and the white ocean band seems to be top-notch quality. The action button is a neat add-on and the white ocean band seems to be top-notch quality. It is very secure on your wrist and that’s good for me because I don’t like when a watch is constant sliding around while your doing stuff throughout the day. It’s also comfortable, so snagging your arm hairs or anything and I went to the gym with no issues whatsoever. If you are super outdoorsy, I would definitely recommend looking at Garmin before buying this. Garmin battery life is usually at least a few weeks on a single charge with very similar features. For an extra $100, going Garmin will get you a very comparable device with like 28+ days of battery per charge and also offer solar charging. I only went with Apple for the flawless compatibility between the devices and maybe for a little extra flash. If you’re looking for a hardcore rugged lifestyle watch, Garmin is probably the better brand for you. The Apple Watch Ultra is very robust for an Apple product but I wouldn’t recommend spending the money if $799 is going to be a stretch for you. Side by side with the series 8, there’s not really $400ish in differences, more build-quality than anything else. I only did it because I had a device to trade in and a $100 gift card, otherwise I just don’t know if I would have pulled the trigger. Overall, very solid product and I don’t have any legitimate complaints thus far.

Finally, a worthy upgrade to the Apple Watch Serie
26 December 2022

I received the AWU as a Christmas present from my beautiful wife. Finally, Apple has produced a Watch that I felt offered enough of an upgrade to the AW Series 3. Yes, Watches since the 3 have great new features, larger, brighter screens etc. but functionally and aesthetically I found all of them to be too similar to what I already owned to buy a new one. The Ultra is a large watch but it feels like the screen size finally allows you to legitimately perform actions that previously could only be done on a smart phone: text, dial phone numbers, read emails, view photos etc.I have a medium sized wrist (around 7 inches circumference) and this is a perfect size for me. It seems it would last a couple days between charges but if you’re needing an extreme watch with a few days worth of charge, this isn’t the watch for you. I work out but I’m not an extreme athlete. I wanted this beauty because of the looks, screen size, tough titanium and sapphire glass construction, improved battery life, wayfinder face, etc.All in all I am thrilled with the Ultra and won’t need to look for an upgrade for another five years or so. I would strongly recommend you try this watch on your wrist in person. Most photos online are taken phone cameras that distort the dimensions and make it look comically large. In reality, it’s a great size and it may be perfect for you.

The greatest Watch ever made!

Let's get the obvious stuff out of the way. Yes, this is an Apple watch that needs to be charged and costs $799. With that out of the way, let's get right to it. First, the larger face and better battery life make this watch completely superior to any apple watch ever made. This is a flat-out game-changer. It took apple watches from being a chargeable toy to a TOOL. I have had Apple watches twice in my life and the one thing they never did for me is replace my standard watches. This flat sapphire anti-reflective screen changed all that. The way it feels and looks is vastly different without the rounded edges of the simpler Apple watches. And as far as battery life...I go 4 days without charging it. I never have to worry about bumps and or breaks with this model and having every single feature apple has on their apple watch only makes this even more needed. Fall and crash detection are a must-have. Being able to make a call from your wrist without the phone is a flat-out killer. Backtracking and the customizable button are welcome addition to my life. So while other watches like Garmin may claim to have better this or that, they still don't have the apple integration that makes this irreplaceable. Things like Siri and an actual color display and OS that allows me to add more and more apps and features just in a league of their own and at $799 is still a bargin.

Here's a quick rundown of the pros and cons to the watch as it relates to my own usage (YMMV):Pros:- much better battery life when compared to the Series 6. I can easily get two days of battery life doing my normal activities (a couple of GPS tracked runs and workouts and my regular daily usage of looking at my notifications etc). Oh and the watch went from 100% to 56% when I ran the Chicago Marathon last Sunday. Thats a lot of battery leftover.- love the new flat screen design that takes elements of the current iPad Pro and iPhone design aesthetics. From edge to edge, the screen is flat and I love it.- The action button is much appreciated in terms of quickly getting to the pre-assigned action- GPS tracking - LOVE the accuracy. The dual GPS frequency tracking is great. It's also not clear if Apple is leveraging what it knows about city streets from their Maps app but the tracking is incredibly accurate even around dense tall buildings. I ran the Chicago Marathon last week and wore both the Ultra and my older Garmin. While the Garmin told me I ran nearly 28 miles b/c of the buildings, the Watch Ultra told me I ran 26.58 miles - the closest I've ever come to 26.2 on any GPS tracked marathon ever.- GPS lock - wow this thing locks on a GPS signal fast.- Size. Yes I think the larger size is a pro. If you're coming from the Sports fitness world of Garmin Fenix's - the 49mm size isn't that bad at all. The larger size brings about the larger display (which is a godsend for my aging eyes) and the larger battery - all really great features. My wrist got used to the bulk in a day.Cons:- Larger battery - slightly longer battery charging times (granted this is using my current charging hardware and not the included charger)- My wrist isn't the thickest wrist out there for a guy and thus getting a nice snug fit can be difficult with the Apple Watch. This sometimes affects the heart rate measurements for some reason (Watch Ultra won't pick up my heart rate which is a pain for long runs)- Because of my wrist size, the watch can sometimes ride down towards the lower end of my wrist which is only a problem when I'm doing Yoga. When I'm doing certain poses such upward facing dog, the back of my hand can sometimes press the right button and make the Watch think I'm requesting SOS :/Really thats all I can think of right now. This watch is a great improvement over the regular series watch. Don't get hung up over the size if you're coming from the world of large sports watches. If you have a super tiny wrist or are using the smaller 41mm watch tho - this might be large for you.For me - this is a great great watch that I'll use for almost all occasions going forward.

What an AW should’ve always been
25 February 2023

I’m writing this review after a few months of wearing it and I’m still impressed. I’ve owned a couple other Apple and Garmin Watches and I feel this is what an Apple Watch should have always been. The rugged form factor is eye catching and really feels like it’s built for the outdoors. Not much of a leap in terms of the software features compared to other AWs. But the physical attributes are what make it shine above the rest. The screen is big and bright and I never have to squint to read the display. I was a little concerned that it might be too big on my wrist. Surprisingly it’s not much different than my Garmin Fenix 6. I’m pretty careful with my watches and have inadvertently banged and scraped my Ultra a few times on hard surfaces. Not a scratch. I’m pretty careful with my watches and have inadvertently banged and scraped my Ultra a few times on hard surfaces. Not a scratch. However I still wouldn’t wear it for something like rock climbing. Stainless steel has a slightly higher hardness than titanium, so it still will scratch with enough force.I’m not a diver, but the dive app is a cool addition. I don’t use the native workout app, but seems to sync well with other fitness apps I’ve used. So far the only thing I’d like to see would be more preset options for the side activity button. Looking forward to what future updates might introduce. I was on the fence about the price tag, but with the “built” looking titanium case, seamless integration with iPhone, and versatility I get it. Definitely worth it.
