If you need this, you are probably wanting to do something that Apple does not want you to do. They would rather you buy new equipment and not try and make your legacy equipment work. Sometimes Apple literally blocks the drivers of third party manufacturers so that it won't work. For example, I've had equipment not work at all with this, but it shows up as a connection in System Report, so the connection DOES work, Apple just blocks it. Just beware that even though this seems like it should solve your problem, it might not.

This Apple Thunderbolt 3 Male to Thunderbolt 2 Female Adapter is needed to connect your older Thunderbolt 2 Mac computer with limited stations to a Thunderbolt docking station. The docking station providing youThunderbolt 3 connections allows you to run your external hard drives or solid state drive at higher write and read speeds of 20 GB ps. Card reeders connected would download high numbers of larger raw photographic files and diminish the time to download or upload your photo or movies In short this adapter can speed up your workflow on the older Thunderbolt 2 Macs without enough stations to connect all of the devices. Great product. Thanks to B&H for keeping the older Macs working at up to 20 Gb ps speeds.

Moving from a pair of Macs with Thunderbolt 1 ports to a pair with Thunderbolt 3 ports, I needed a way to quickly migrate files form the old machines to the new machines. While not cheap, it did the job with flying colors. The alternative would have been from Time Machine backups over Wi-Fi which would take many hours...I've done it before. This adapter allowed me to transfer the entire contents of the machines in a half hour each.I also own a single Thunderbolt 2 SSD and this adapter allows me to keep using it with my new machines. If you're a Mac user like me who only upgrades to new machines once every ten years or so, this adapter is worth it's weight in gold.

I bought both the Apple Thunderbolt (TB) 2 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and the Apple TB 3 Male to TB 2 Female Adapter for use with a 2017 MacBook Pro (MBP). This MBP has four Thunderbolt (TB) 3 ports but no inbuilt ethernet (or Firewire) ports.I prefer the security of a wired connection and the MUCH faster file transfers speed of GigaBit ethernet to the MBP's normal wi-fi connection. TB2 and TB3 connectors are different sizes. Therefore, to use the ethernet adapter with the TB3 ports on my MBP, I had to buy both adapters and connect them in series with my ethernet cable. It looks kludged, but it works fine.By the way, I also use the TB3 to TB2 adapter with an Apple Thunderbolt To Firewire(FW) Adapter to connect my Firewire devices to the 2017 MBP. I use my 2017 iMac for music composition and recording. I wanted to connect a fast USB 3.0/Lightning hard drive to be online with the iMac all the time to use as a dedicated hard drive for music recording. I have a USB audio interface and MIDI keyboard controller connected all the time to the iMac and I found that the four iMac USB host ports were completely occupied when doing a Time Machine backup to another USB 3.0 external hard drive, so I wanted to move my dedicated music hard drive (G-Technology G Drive Mobile 1 TB USB 3.0/Lightning drive) to a Lightning 3 port on the iMac. I wanted to utilize a Lightning 3 port and also to free up a USB 3.0 host port. The Apple Thunderbolt 3 Male to Thunderbolt 2 Female Adapter allows me to do just that. This can be used in either direction. i.e. connect a thunderbolt 3 device to a thunderbolt 2 computer; however, in this case the device can not receive power thus the device needs to be self powered or further down the line and draw power from an upstream device. It can also be used to connect a thunderbolt 2 device to a thunderbolt 3 computer and in this case the device can draw power from the host computer.
Let's be honest; if you're looking at this adapter, chances are you also have the FireWire to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and you're looking to get some adapter-on-adapter action to do DV/Digital8 tape captures.Good news: this adapter works for that. I'm using a Sony Digital8 Handycam with my M1 MacBook Pro, and it works for capturing both from tape playback and straight from the camera. Device control in Premiere Pro doesn't work consistently with my specific camcorder, but it probably does work for most DV camcorders (and more stable editing software, wink wink).Bad news: only Apple makes this adapter, and it's $50 brand new. That price tag seems a bit ridiculous to me, but there are sadly no alternative products. This is the least expensive bidirectional Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter available. It works well for Thunderbolt devices it supports.I bought it to use the Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter I already had, worked like a charm, plug and play.It does not work for bus powered devices, such as bus powered Lacie Rugged hard drives, or Blackmagic design mini recorder. This adapter doesnt receive power over Thunderbolt, so you cant charge your Mac by connecting the adapter to an external Thunderbolt display or other device that delivers power over Thunderbolt. - from Apple’s product info page.It does not work as a USB C to mini display adapter, Apple lists this right on the package. There are less expensive adapters available for that.I don’t get the negative reviews for a product that explicitly says what it does and reviewers want it to do something it explicitly says it can not.I’ll admit that the shape of the ports all being the same is not a smart move, a bit of diligence and you won’t choose the wrong adapter.Hope this helps.
This will work in conjunction with Thunderbolt 2 Male adapters like a Thunderbolt male to FireWire 800 female adapter; I successfully connected these two adapters together between an external drive and a MacBookPro M1 Max to transfer over a terabyte of data in a reasonable amount of time. I haven't tested this product with my Thunderbolt male to Ethernet female adapter yet, but will update this review if possible afterwards. This product says that it does NOT work with certain Apple displays; I will test it with my BenQ display and update this review if possible afterwards. Happy (and relieved) that this product worked with another adapter!
I purchased this to connect a high-speed P2 card reader to my new Apple laptop. The drive lights up but the P2 cards do not mount. Upon further research, the card reader does not support this connection adapter. Wasted my money & have to use the old slow USB reader on the new super fast computer. I'm sure the adapter is great for other purposes
