I had my Version 3 2012 era AppleTV connected to a Samsung 75 inch smart TV since early 2014. It was always my goto device for Netflix and Prime as well as the Apple content because the app was so much more responsive and userfriendly than the Samsung Smart TV apps. I also loved having my pictures as the screen saver but was always frustrated that loading them took so long and it seemed like despite having several thousand pictures in the cloud it only played about 100 or so of them. I also didnt like that the version 3 didnt have the ability to get new apps. I had subscriptions to the DAZN boxing app, Disney, etc that I had to either Airplay to the TV from my iphone or Mac or use the clunky Samsung apps which, incidentally, could never seem to synch the sound to ... MoreI had my Version 3 2012 era AppleTV connected to a Samsung 75 inch smart TV since early 2014. I had subscriptions to the DAZN boxing app, Disney, etc that I had to either Airplay to the TV from my iphone or Mac or use the clunky Samsung apps which, incidentally, could never seem to synch the sound to the screen perfectly. Then the screen saver started resetting to the default apple pictures every time the hockey puck went to sleep and I got really frustrated. I wanted to change to a different streaming device I was so upset but after searching and reviewing all of the options AppleTV still seemed to be the best for me. So I bought the 4K version and decided to go with the 64GB in hopes that it might help with the screen saver.WOW It SOOOO Exceeded my expectations First, let me talk about the setup. I was dreading the need to go through the wizard, dig up my wifi passwords, icloud passwords, other accounts, etc. Let me tell you Apple has, again, set the bar so much higher than anyone else. You plug the new hockey puck in and turn it on. It tells you to bring your iphone close to the device and BAM youre doneThen I was STUNNED by the picture quality I could NOT believe the difference. I THOUGHT my 4k TV was getting 4K content from Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Apple but it wasnt either through the smart TV apps or the Version 3 device. The video quality is AMAZING. Then I went to the app store and found apps for ALL of the subscriptions I have. My wife called me to lunch and when I came back my screensaver was on with pictures Id never seen on the TV before I dont know whether its because of the 64GB or just the upgraded device and I dont care wowAnd talk about a responsive app The new remote took a LITTLE time to get use to and its very sensitive but in now time at all I was flying around the screen whether its surfing youtube videos or just flipping between Netflix and the CW. OH, did I mention how easy it is to use the voice commands on the remote Hold down the button and say Lois and Clark and BOOM, youre watching superman. Dont wait another second, Im sorry for every second I wasted ... go buy one of these puppies TODAY

But I recently upgraded my home cinema setup to include a Dolby Atmos sound system and wanted to be able to take advantage of the Atmos enabled programming on Netflix and Amazon Prime and thats where things get tricky as only a few devices actually provide the Atmos signal from these services. But I recently upgraded my home cinema setup to include a Dolby Atmos sound system and wanted to be able to take advantage of the Atmos enabled programming on Netflix and Amazon Prime and thats where things get tricky as only a few devices actually provide the Atmos signal from these services. Even TVs and streaming devices such as the Amazon Fire Stick that are Dolby Atmos capable do not provide the Atmos signal on Netflix and Prime. Apparently in Netflixs case at least this is due to them getting paid by certain manufacturers to use Atmos for their devices. Out of my setup the only device I have that allowed Dolby Atmos from the Netflix app is my Xbox One X and thats not a device I want to use on a daily basis for watching TV on. So I purchased the Apple TV 4K 32GB box the internal storage is purely for apps so not much point buying the 64GB version as its unlikely most people will ever install that many apps to need it and replaced the Fire TV 4K stick in my setup with it. Now you might find when first loading up Netflix that it still appears that Dolby Atmos isnt working for some reason you need to start playing a Dolby Atmos enable program and then the Dolby Atmos content will start being identified by the Dolby Atmos logo on the program details. The sound and video quality of anything you stream is superb. I find that Netflix and Prime streams look better through this than the same apps on other devices. So for the purpose I bought it for I am more than happy but an unexpected surprise is everything else. Its such a nice interface that brings together all your streaming platforms and apps into one interface and actually then pulls programmes to continue and suggestions on what to watch next along with content you have purchased through iTunes onto a front page. Its like a TV guide for every possible content you use and makes it so easy to continue watching the things you love across various different platforms. Another surprise was the great value of the movies in the iTunes Store. Most films are much cheaper than through other platforms and a lot of the content now includes Dolby Atmos sound and 4K HDR video and if you purchase something that doesnt currently have these features you automatically get upgraded to the best version if they add those features at a later date. With the latest movies between 9.99 to 13.99 in 4K HDR Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos sound its a great alternative to 25 4K HDR Bluray Discs. Obviously the quality on a 4K Bluray Disc will always be superior to a stream for many films the difference wouldnt be noticeable unless played side by side and its a cheaper way to get 4K HDR with Dolby Atmos for the films you want a decent version of but dont need to own an expensive disc for. The remote you get is a stunner. Tiny, slim and typically Apple. Includes a built in Mic and you can use Siri to search across your platforms to find content. When you do search for content maybe surprisingly the Apple TV will always priorities the Free or Cheaper options first even if that costs Apple a sale through iTunes. Its great as you know you can trust the search results and wont then find it cheaper elsewhere. I cant really comment on the gaming features as I havent tried them yet but there are also games in the App Store that you can buy and play. Many just using the included remote and some that you need to buy a compatible gamepad for the good news there is they are adding in support for Xbox and PS4 pads soon so if you already own one of these you dont have to spend money on a new pad. In summary I absolutely love this box, the image and sound quality are the best I have found on any streaming device, the interface is like most Apple interfaces, just perfect, simple, functional and attractive and the build and design of the device and remote itself is again typically Apple, modern, simple and stylish. Its not cheap by any means but its worth the money.

So I finally grabbed this, after a friend who uses it said he doesn't have any issues. Setup was SO SIMPLE. I stopped using Apple laptops about 10 or 11 years ago, but I still use an iPhone and have an iPad. LOVED that it asked me to simply get the iPhone close to simplify setup. Also love that if there's a popup for me to search or authenticate, I can also do it all on my phone, it pops an instant notification I can simply click on, rather than having to type with the remote on a keyboard on the TV. These are HUGE steps forward in my opinion. The Tablo experience is much better than on the Cube. I have less clicks to get to my live station. Plex worked well as well, and I've been playing with Plex (I have a Synology DS1821+ in the basement with 8 bays and about 60 terabytes of data) and it's been flawless so far. My OLED TV was recognized and dolby vision worked just fine. I still use my Logitech Harmony Elite remote with this since it's just easier, but the touch / trackpad type of control on the top of this worked OK too. For anyone streaming, can't go wrong here, so far it's by far the best I've used.

Let me start by saying that my household has many apple products. We have an Apple Watch, too iPhone 13 Pro Max, and a MacBook M1 air. I figured the Apple TV would work great in this ecosystem. Unfortunately I found the system to be lacking. The pros of the system are that the picture quality is fantastic And the menu is snappy (quick). I love the screen saver feature. The app support is horrendous though. It’s not that there aren’t apps but that they are horribly made. Apple is also shoving its TV service down your throat. After using a Chromecast for the last eight years, I was really hoping that I could just cast from the apps. Although it is technically possible, it works like crap. It’s not that there aren’t apps but that they are horribly made. Apple is also shoving its TV service down your throat. After using a Chromecast for the last eight years, I was really hoping that I could just cast from the apps. Although it is technically possible, it works like crap. For example, you still have to choose the app with the remote and then you can cast inside the app. If you’re someone who likes remotes then the system is great for you, I just find them unnecessary in 2022. Now iOS has a built-in remote for the Apple TV, but it’s still more annoying to use than just being able to cast from the apps. And you can put multiple accounts on the Apple TV, but every time you want to switch accounts you have to go into settings. The system also gets really weird if you have more than one person casting videos. For example, me and my Fiancé will often share videos on the TV with each other, where I would play one and then she would play one. This doesn’t work very well with an Apple TV. It also randomly blacks out and will start playing videos at a random volume. When I want to use AirPlay to play something, It will often start playing the video, go to black, and then play whatever was playing previously. It’s obnoxious. For a premium streaming device, this is a pretty poor experience in my opinion. Again, if you’re somebody who wants a remote and just plays Netflix or buys movies from iTunes, you’ll have a good experience. The overall build is very high-quality and feels solid in the hands. This device just doesn’t work for me. It’s definitely a better user experience than a cheapo Chromecast or cheapo fire stick, but it’s still pretty crappy in my opinion. This experience pushed me to finally pay up and just buy the Nvidia shield and be done with trying streaming devices.

I always believed that apple TV was just another Roku or Fire Stick. I've had Rokus on TVs I owned that were not smart, and I got used to the janky feeling you experience while navigating the menus. I've also owned several LG smart TVs, and if you've owned an LG TV you know how horrible webOS is, but I thought that was the norm so I didn't think anything of it. While I was browsing through youtube, I stumbled across a video reviewing the Apple TV and breaking down all of its features, and I was sold once I saw how seamlessly it operates within the Apple Ecosystem. I went to Best Buy the next day to buy one, and it is the best purchase I have made for my home theater. Apps open very fast and there is virtually no waiting for apps to load. The remote feels very high quality and I love that I can swipe on the touchpad to navigate the menus rather than having to press. Typing text is a breeze because I can use my iPhone to type rather than having to use those horrible janky smart TV keyboards. If the remote is too far (sometimes I am comfy and do not want to move) I can use my iPhone as a remote, which is one of my favorite features by far. These are just some of the many features that Apple TV has to offer. It is a very powerful machine and I highly recommend it if you are seeking to level up your entertainment experience.

Good, not excellent

I own a 4k Sony TV (x900f) with Android TV built in. I purchased this to try to improve the experience (interface, speed) and fill a few functionality gaps (airplay) What it did well: - Controller touchad was very nice to use, easy to zip around the interface - It was nice to be able to mirror content from my iPhone or MacBook onto the TV - interface was speedy and pleasant to use- a nice upgrade over the functional android interface with a very subpar processor that Sony put in the TV - scrubbing through video was quick and easy, no more going back 30 seconds to re-watch something and waiting for long buffering times - being able to easily connect AirPods is a big plus What was lacking - As simple and pleasant as the controller and interface is, it did end up ... MoreI own a 4k Sony TV (x900f) with Android TV built in. I was able to get the TV to power up with the Apple TV remote, but never got it to turn off the TV- it seems that compatibility to turn the TV OFF with the Apple TV remote is dependent on your TV model. - It was also strange having two sets of volume control; the Apple TV's volume and the TV's volume- just one more thing having us reach for a second remote. There were also not any volume numbers, just listen and guess - Screen mirroring from my MacBook to the TV had middling image quality, far lower than directly plugging in my MacBook into the TV. Despite a very fast internet connection, the latest 16" MacBook, a 49" 4k TV, and plugging in the Apple TV into the 4k60 port, it still looked more like 1080p - Screen mirroring wasn't the most graceful from the phone. Eg if I was playing YouTube, I'd see the Apple TV Home Screen while it transitioned between the video and an advertisement - why is the remote remote still using an IR blaster? Why not bluetooth? Our setup is pretty clean, just the TV and sound bar (Sonos) on a stand. At this price point it seems silly that I need to have line-of-site to control it and have a visible set top box with a LIGHT on the front of it- who wants that? - 64gb storage? Storage is super cheap now, should easily be 128gb/256gb as the two options - price barely seemed passable upon purchase, but the drawbacks and added complexity over a sluggish but functional Android Smart TV really didn't make it worth it - The remote's touchpad made zipping through the interface nice, but the buttons felt pretty generic (loud click and cheapish click) and the comfort was meh due to the small size of the remote. Again, for the price point, I'd expect more I ended up returning the Apple TV. While the interface and speed was nice, it ended up making our setup more complex since we still ended up needing to revert back to our TV's remote. Another big motivator for the Apple TV purchase was to be able to use my TV as a second screen, and the quality was pretty poor for that.

Pretty nice, except…
24 June 2022

I’m enjoying my time with the Apple TV streaming box so far. The interface is very quick and the controls are intuitive. It’s pretty neat how I’m able to play games on it, although I wish all the games allowed you to play them through the remote. Only some of them do; the rest require a controller. I also wish more games, specifically Minecraft, were available to play through Apple TV. Not a huge deal, though, but it is room for improvement. What is kind of a big deal is that I can’t get Hulu to work on it! The app freezes every time I try to log in, and there’s no way to log in through the phone. Pretty weird, especially since my TV lets me watch Hulu through the normal interface. That sort of makes me question the value of this product: smartTVs are getting better ... MoreI’m enjoying my time with the Apple TV streaming box so far. That sort of makes me question the value of this product: smartTVs are getting better all the time, offering many of the same streaming services that these streaming boxes offer. New Samsung TVs are also getting Xbox Game Pass built in, which I don’t think Apple TV would ever get. So I don’t think this is a good value if you have a new smart TV and it already has everything you want on it. But, if your TV is older, then this is a great way to “renovate” it, so to speak. Just hopefully Hulu will work for you!

Roku to FireTV Stick to Apple TV
2 September 2022

Started out using the Roku figuring we didn’t need much power to be able to stream shows. Had several issues with these even getting a replacement from the manufacturer. Finally gave up and tried the Amazon 4K stick. It was far better and had far fewer issues with loading and crashes. However the interface isn’t great. It still took awhile to load things. Ironically we had the most issues with Amazon content. Decided to step up to the Apple TV figuring the extra power and Apple’s reputation for quality would hold up. This is hands down the best there is out there. The interface is as simple to use as the Roku but after owning it for over a month now I can easily say it is far and away the best streaming box out there. Side note: Paramount+ still sucks. I think that’s just the app since it has always been bad on every platform. Seriously slow load times and having to restart the app. It’s never ending.

The BEST Apple TV yet…period
23 February 2022

* TL / DR * - If you are or have been on the fence about upgrading an older Apple TV, just do it. Period. Buy this and just enjoy how incredible this new version is. Ok, so here is my take on the new 4K Apple TV. I have a long history with Apple products, including the Apple TV, all the way back to the first generation, yes, the large Mac mini looking one, all the way up to the previous 1080p version (not current 1080p version). I have a Roku 4K as my primary display, but was not using an Apple TV on this as I really like the Roku layout, the abundance of apps, and it’s generally flawless. I had a theater room with a projector, 110” screen, 7.2.2 Atmos, but it was 1080 (where my 1080p Apple TV lived). Well, I moved and combined my theater to my living room and now ... More* TL / DR * - If you are or have been on the fence about upgrading an older Apple TV, just do it. Period. I had a theater room with a projector, 110” screen, 7.2.2 Atmos, but it was 1080 (where my 1080p Apple TV lived). Well, I moved and combined my theater to my living room and now just use the 4K and figured I’d also upgrade to the new 4K Apple TV. I had not really wanted the new one, as the 1080p version was literally perfect, and from my viewing distance, the 55” 4K looked phenomenal with 1080 OR 4K, so I initially held off…until I wanted to try Dobly Atmos audio & use my AirPods Max. Fast Forward to replacing the 1080p Apple TV with the newest 4K model and holy cow, the increase in speed, the new remote (it’s worth it alone to just upgrade the remote), AirPods instant connection/transfer, Apple Music integration, Home Pod integration…it’s awesome. Again, I had no desire at all to replace my old 1080p version because I didn’t really feel the updates would be worth the $179 price tag, but for real, it’s worth every bit of that and more. I have found myself discovering old music that’s been updated with Atmos via Apple Music and it sounds incredible (something Roku can’t do). I now have the hub that Roku was for my theater, but with the added benefit of including the Apple stuff I use all the time on my iPhone & iPad Pro (Apple Music, movies purchased or digitally redeemed when I bought 4K or BluRay copies, private listening via AirPods, instant log-in and account connection via iCloud Keychain…the list just goes and goes). If you are a diehard Apple user, this really does make more sense than a Roku, and I LOVE my Roku. But there is no going back for me. Again, this new model has absolutely been the best home theater upgrade I’ve done is years and I really didn’t *think* I wanted one, even going as far as asking why anyone would…then I bought mine. Probably one of the best features is all of my older movies redeemed with Digital Copy are now in 4K, contain the Atmos tracks and I no longer need to use my Xbox One S as a dedicated BluRay / 4K player UNLESS I don’t have a digital copy of that film. That means I can sell or trade in my physical discs of those movies, putting some money back in my pocket and potentially paying for the Apple TV just by doing that. If you’re on the fence about buying one like I was, just get it. Picture quality is obviously amazing (and to be fair, this higher end Roku 4K provides identical replay quality - 4K @ 60hz), Atmos support system wide is awesome, AirPods connectivity is awesome, the new remote is awesome, iCloud photos (if you use that) is great, and lastly, all the major player streaming apps are there and the layout & speed is incredible VS some other platforms, especially Amazon Fire devices (BARF). If you are in the Apple Ecosystem and want to try a different streaming platform, this is hands down the best way to do it.

Very fast processor

I bought this Apple TV on a friend’s recommendation and because I own an IPhone and find it’s interface easy to use. For at least the last 5 years I have streamed using either my Roku or my TiVo. I have the TiVo as I primarily watch OTA programs. I recently bought a new tv with google tv as it’s smart tv platform. The TiVo noticeably loads and responds the slowest of these streaming devices. I have had the TiVo for the longest of the devices so probably strongly out of familiarity the interface is the easiest for me. The Roku I have owned nearly as long as the TiVo. I used it as my primary streaming device until recently purchasing the new tv and appletv. I used it as my primary streaming device until recently purchasing the new tv and appletv. The Roku interface is my preference of all 4 devices and I found it’s remote simple and the the easiest learn. The google tv is my new tv’s operating system interface. I have only had this tv for about 2 weeks longer than the appletv. The google tv responds very quickly compared to the TiVo and Roku but the appletv seems to respond even much more quickly than the google tv. I haven’t used the google interface much as I still primarily watch ota using the TiVo. So I have not used the google tv interface and remote enough to have any opinion of use. The appletv seems to process so much faster than the other devices I have mentioned. When loading any of my streaming services they nearly instantly appear. I still haven’t owned this very long and as I said don’t stream alot. My impression so far of the interface is it is apple and having owned only iPhones very familiar and easy to navigate. The remote is simple physically a similar simple minimalist buttons as the Roku remote. I am experiencing a slow learning curve mastering the main combination cursor and/or mouse button. It’s used as the primary navigation for the interface and as the forward, reverse, pause, play and etc. for streaming. It takes some finesse to not get unintended responses. I haven’t spent more than 20 hours streaming and spent a couple hours playing and exploring. When streaming one feature the appletv does l know my Roku or TiVo won’t do is skip back or forward by 10 seconds like a dvr. The other major preference I am having is owning an iPhone gives options to share apps.music,etc. Overall the appletv 4K will be my go to streaming device. At this point as I haven’t owned it for long this is based on it’s impressive processing speed. As I don’t stream that much I don’t believe l needed this in any way but I so far it’s my preference and each time I use it I am finding that large button does something I hadn’t learned it could do.
