TFT/LCD displays are perfectly flat, a lot thinner and lighter than conventional CRT displays and do not flicker, all this because of the new technology they use for producing images. Do you want to free up space on your desk, or do you want to be able to move your monitor without breaking your back? Then this is the perfect display for you!

ASUS PG42UQ - Follow Up review - It's GREAT!!!

I purchased this monitor back about September 2023. I use it mainly for business purposes in Engineering endeavors. In an earlier rating, I described how I have had problems with auto-dimming occurring, apparently being the nature of OLED type screens to protect from working with mainly static screens. Gamers don't have such an issue with constant screen changes from video content. I described my frustration of not being able to turn off auto dimming, where the screen suddenly and frequently drops to less than half its full brightness. I need the high 450 nits brightness of this monitor, along with its 4K resolution for fine detail work in my professional work. Well, finally I discovered the fix and want to share it. Now, I just love this monitor and I can highly recommend it for both business users, as well as the gamers. Turning off auto-dimming is pretty well hidden, but easy to do. Do this. Start the On Screen Display (OSD menu). Move the selection to System Setup. Navigate to Screen Protection and then to Screen Saver, and then select Off. This disables auto dimming. Users that do this should probably also periodically use the Pixel Cleaning function in the same part of the menu. This cleans up pixels that have been exposed to static screen content for a fairly long time, apparently to prevent screen damage from building up.Now, I am really a very happy user of this ASUS PG42UQ 4K monitor. It truly does meet all of the needs of both gamers, and designers in business endeavors that also usually have fairly static screens for minutes to hours at a time. Wonderful, wonderful!! So pleased!! It's Amazing!! Just get one. You won't be disappointed.

I did a lot of research before making this purchase. My criteria was focused on two things: Had to be large, and had to be OLED. I purchased an Alienware AW3423DWF and this Asus and side-by-sided them. The Alienware with its QOLED panel arguably has the better picture, but in the end, we're talking about comparing a superb picture with a really very good picture. I would have a absolutely been happy with either one. But while I appreciated the wide, curved Alienware, the overall picture was just too small. The Asus is actually a couple of inches wider, while being much taller, making things on the screen larger. Some people say the lack of a glossy screen is a letdown, but the matte finish on the Asus is not at all grainy. Lots of features and ports. Really excellent gaming monitor. Very happy with my purchase and the fast B&H shipping.

Absolutely, let's refine your review with minimal changes:I spend a lot of time on my PC for various reasons; typical collaborative and productivity work, design work, and of course, gaming. For obvious reasons, I love this monitor. It's bright, sharp, and the colors are amazing. I love the fact that it's got a built-in KVM, which was a deciding factor for me. I often do screen sharing as part of my collaboration work for training, and the ability to use the KVM to divide my screen in half means I can share half my screen as if it was a 27" monitor. No need to change the window I'm sharing. So, yes, spectacular for gaming and videos, but if you want something that is also good for everyday use, this is your beast. This replaced a (very capable) Acer Predator CG437K and is a noticeable all round (*) improvement: the pure blacks and whites make everything pop so much more - those dark caves and mountainous reaches in skyrim never looked so good, in Fortnite snow really looks like snow all of a sudden and gave me a pang of nostalgia for old skiing holidays. The accuracy and richness of the colour rendering makes 3D games appear "even more 3D" somehow. Although I was never really bothered by the slight motion smearing of the acers VA panel when panning around, I REALLY notice the absence of it and I think this contributes to the even-more-3D effect I mentioned earlier, it also helps situational awareness in fast games like Fortnite.(*) Although I said all round, we must talk about the limitations of OLED brightness, with auto dimming off I have it set to 90% and thats adequate for me but possibly not for some people. The Acer for example was capable of burning your silhouette into the wall behind you so this is a material step down in theoretical capability BUT not one that I personally care about as I don't need high brightness or care about HDR etc.Value for money: Look if you spending over a grand on a monitor its a money-no-object purchase right so who cares :-)Summary: A solid 5 stars and, IF you can live with the brightness limitations of an OLED ... a noticeable step up from even premium monitors using other panel types.

Do not buy this Monitor

I've been using and building Computers for 35 years. This is hands down the worst Monitor I've ever used. Random shimmering in games and on desktop using both DisplayPort and HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 2.1. I have the very best cables you can buy, 8K Industry Certified and tested. Not a single setting in either Nvidia Driver or on the Monitor makes a difference. At random times the Monitor will go Dark and will not awake with a keyboard input. You actually have to POWER OFF and disconnect power to reawaken it. When I started doing more research I'm not the only User experiencing issues. Either I got a lemon or this is par for the course with this model. I can't even bother RMA'ing due to ASUS notorious awful customer user. Not PCCASEGEAR's fault - I've been buying here since ... MoreI've been using and building Computers for 35 years. Great display for monitor and tv
25 February 2024

Have had this monitor for a month or so and I use it as a Computer Display, TV and as a reference monitor. I think it provides great value for all three.I usually calibrate all my displays with an i1profiler (the one ASUS bundles with their higher-end displays) and this monitor and a couple of other ASUS displays (ASUSXG32UQ) they are good enough to not calibrate. Don't get me wrong, you have to calibrate any monitor for color critical work. It is just that I don't currently do work that requires 10-bit displays or pinpoint accuracy for a specific color space. For all other purposes, it is nice to see the displays are sent calibrated with a color response graph printed out and included. The monitor is also quite bright right out of the box, I would probably lower ... MoreHave had this monitor for a month or so and I use it as a Computer Display, TV and as a reference monitor. For all other purposes, it is nice to see the displays are sent calibrated with a color response graph printed out and included. The monitor is also quite bright right out of the box, I would probably lower the brightness if using it 100% as a computer monitor, especially if you use the pc for email, browsing the internet, showing the desktop and doing spreadsheets. I think this monitor is better suited if you show videos 80% or so of the time.Haven't had any issues with the remote, connectivity (I have connected display ports and HDMIs) and the monitor hasn't shown any issues. The sound is better than ok. It has come a long way from several years ago, when any monitor or TV would sound muffled, garbled or coming from a drawer under the TV. Now, while it will not win any awards, the sound is well positioned to identify stereo, dialogue and relatively good 3D space in a movie or a good sound mix.The monitor is very appealing to the eye and to me, what makes it even better is that it doesn't have TV functionality. i.e. I don't have an Operating System to deal with to watch a signal (that drives me crazy with several Sony TVs I have -- have to connect to the internet, create an account, have a password, update the TV either OS or firmware, and more nonsense) and I think the TV is good enough for a reference monitor (i.e. you don't have to spend several grand on a monitor) -- I just added an AJA HDMI to SDI adapter and I would gladly have the combo than spend extra to just have a monitor with SDI 12G built in.Gladly recommend this for everything and anything but showing a static image constantly. For that, you may risk burn in. Otherwise, play, work and watch videos to your hearts content!

Out of the box, it looked amazing and it honestly took me a few hours to adjust to 4k from 1440p because I wasn't used to the detail. The good: Freesync works great, HDR looks good, darks are amazing. Movies and games look great. The bad: Auto-dimming, color distortion (and, in my case, the G-sync sticker)I don't think OLEDs are there yet for regular workstation use. Anytime I'm working on an excel document, in a chat, or generally any instance where the screen has a mainly static image, the auto-dimming feature kicks in to prevent burn in which is extremely annoying and distracting. With HDR enabled there is not a ton you can do. You can enable the Brightness Adjustable ... MoreAfter hearing great things about OLEDs I decided to splurge and give this monitor a try. Anytime I'm working on an excel document, in a chat, or generally any instance where the screen has a mainly static image, the auto-dimming feature kicks in to prevent burn in which is extremely annoying and distracting. With HDR enabled there is not a ton you can do. You can enable the Brightness Adjustable setting and turn your brightness to 70% or below, but this affects the PQ curve and the entire image looks dark and doesn't completely negate the auto-dimming.I thought I'd make an interim solution of having 2 custom profile, one for movies and gaming with full brightness and another with reduced brightness for work. Unfortunately, the custom preset shortcuts don't work. As soon as you hit the preset button to adjust and then accept the change it reverts all of your preset settings back to their defaults. I've updated to the latest firmware and installed the latest drivers.A second problem is that, even if you are sitting a fair ways back (say ~3ft/1m) from the monitor, the screen is large enough that you can recognize a decent amount of color distortion due to you not having a straight-on viewing angle. For example, the screen appears to have cyan colored vertical bands on the edges because you aren't seeing the edge pixels from straight on. If you were to sit in front of the right side of the monitor, the left side would appear to have a band/gradient.Finally, it's not really a rag on the monitor itself, but the stupid G-sync advertisement sticker that comes on the base is ridiculously strongly glued on and they really don't want you taking it off. I peeled mine off and thought there was glue residue remaining, but in fact it had stripped the paint off of the stand!

Absolutely loving it - really easy to set up, initial settings look great (and better still after using Nvidia settings), working perfectly for both gaming and productivity. The OSD is excellent and easy to use with the remote. A tip - I had to install the Asus drivers to get my PC to recognise that the monitor has HDR capability.Negatives? Well, there are some very minor ones, none remotely deal breakers though. The sound quality clearly assumes you have some other speakers, as it's not great. But I do have other speakers, so I'm happy not to have paid extra for speakers I had no intention of using.I'm having to find a workaround to get it on my existing Vesa arm-mount, as the screws that fit the monitor are too wide for my mount (I have some thread inserts on ... MoreAbsolutely loving it - really easy to set up, initial settings look great (and better still after using Nvidia settings), working perfectly for both gaming and productivity. And finally, while the continental kettle plug is right angled, the UK one is straight, which means the lead when plugged in is clearly visible to the left of the screen, so I've ordered a 'left angled' kettle plug.None of which detracts from my enjoyment of a superb monitor that I don't expect to be replacing for many years. If you are thinking of buying, do.
