The extra inches of the 7-inch Jerk Shad will attract just about any predatory species that swims and eats small baitfish - cobia, samson fish, kingfish, trevally, golden snapper, tuna, barra, jewfish, and big flathead. Even a sailfish has been taken on Gulp Jerk Shads. This is fantastic soft bait for larger species in the bluewater and estuaries, and they are also extremely effective while casting into the washes off the rocks, or deep gutters on the beach. Reef fish to pelagics cant resist the combination of baitfish profile - Gulp scent and darting, fluttering, wounded baitfish action that can be created with a simple, jerking retrieve technique. They can be rigged on a number of different jig heads. They are also extremely effective while casting into schools of feeding fish and retrieving them in a stop-start action. Watch out for the explosive takes as they stop. Also try ripping them across the surface for kingfish.

A favourite for snapper, flathead, and unfortunately for the little pickers... When searching for the better fish, 5" is great. When the pickers get too annoying, downgrade to 3".

Hands down best soft plastic for catching Snapper and occasional Kings. Expensive, do dry out quick and do tear easily BUT they actually work. Do your self a favour buy the Bulk container of jerk shads and fill the container up with Yakka Snaks! Just google Jeff "Scratchie" Thompson podcast about catching Snapper. Use a 5/0 1/4 oz TT Jig heads.

I have used this product very successfully in the past and recently bought 6 containers. One container was completely void of fluid, the others were sealed properly but the shad were hard, as if they had gotten dry before being packaged and were packaged and sold anyway. Bottom line is all were unfishable (or at least would have really poor action in the water because they were not soft like they should be). Also, I tried to give Berkley this feedback by email through the "contact us" and their ridiculous "I am not a robot" would not let me through even after at least 12 tries. Then my attempt to reach them through the 800 number was abandoned after being on hold for 15 minutes.Too bad. This is an effective bait when handled properly at the factory and delivered ... MoreI have used this product very successfully in the past and recently bought 6 containers. I use these gulp saltwater jerk shad for fun drop shot fishing off Southern California coast. What i love is it seems to fish best deadsticked so i can effectively fish two rods at a time and when bite is on it keeps me very busy.I like to use a lockspring on a octopus style hook so that bait lasts alot longer and has more natural action. The cool thing about gulp baits is fish will go in for a quick taste an then usually comeback an wallop it and get the hook.Very effective!
I have now used these fluke fishing off the jersey coast. I know they say fresh water but I just don't tell the fluke that's it's not for them. They seem to like it just as much maybe more then the "saltwater" ones. They are a bit softer and while yes they rip easier they also move better and seem the get a little more attention from the fish. So you go threw a couple more but you catch more also. Put it on a jig and start beating up the bottom. Use it as a teaser above a jig on a 6/0 hook and hold on. Put it on both the jig and the teaser and be ready for double headers.
Listened to Jeff "Scratchie" Thompson podcast (Google it) about catching snapper and these get a big recommendation. I've been using them for months and have caught heaps of snapper and also Kings. Pair up with 1/4" Oz, 3/0 or 4/0 TT HD Jig head. Recommend 20 pound main line with a 3-8Kg rod and your good to go. I also run the 7" and they work too.
The Gulp! Jerkshad just keeps on getting bit when other baits don't. We fish it low & slow on the breakwaters & jetties here in Southern California. We also fish it fast through the kelp and shallow eelgrass on the beaches along the coast and at the islands as well. We don't leave home without a few packs on board. PS: don't let anyone tell you it's only a small fish bait, we've caught some really nice large calico, sand, and spotted bay bass on the jerkshad. We usually rig it on a lead head, with weights ranging from 1/4 to 1/2 oz. Some guys drop shot it here as well.
I've been using Gulp for both fresh and saltwater fishing for years now. I'm willing to say it works as good as fresh live bait and sometimes it's better. I don't think color makes any difference so I just keep on using the same chartreuse, and new penny colors. No reason to try anything new with the great results this bait supplies. I do have some issues with the packaging. The bags and the jars leak, eventually. You have to treat them very carefully to maintain the seal.PS got this beautiful Drum on a 5-inch new penny Jerk Shad. Little bait, big fish. Tight lines.
Your new Gulp products are much too soft and flexible. They are easily destroyed by small trash fish. They must be re-rigged on the hook or jig head constantly. They last 20% as long as your “old” Gulp products that apparently you no longer make. They are not worth the price. Please bring back your firm, wonderful and dependable old Gulp products. I will be using your competitor products until you do.
I am very disappointed in the quality of the jerk shad I have purchased. The watermelon red glitter jerk shad is now too soft and the color changes to a dark green when exposed to sunlight and hot temperatures. Something has changed in your manufacturing process. This is my go to bait for flounder and I purchase many packs each year. I have older packs from previous years which still hold their color and have a much more rigid texture that don’t get bit in half every time a pin fish hits it.
