Betrayal at House On The Hill (3rd Edition) Board Game

$67.00

(134 reviews)

The missions in the game are horrible, often strange and almost always brilliant. The players must work together to survive the nightmare they have created, problems are solved and battles are fought together, but one of the players is indeed a traitor. The new version features new characters, updated detailed and unpainted miniatures. Innovative, memorable, unpredictable, and never boring, one of the best board games ever. The game can be played over and over again. In terms of game mechanics, Betrayal at House on the Hill is a cooperative game, but there are traitors among them. The previous version has been on the market since 2010, players thought the game was great, but the quality of the game components was poor. In this version, that shortcoming has been corrected and the quality of the game components has been invested. 3-6 players. Game time 60-90 min. Age recommendation 12+.

Overall, I loved the new designs, the are beautiful, as well as the new way to figure out which haunt it will be, as well as many of the new mechanics. Thing is, there a re a lot of issues. The rules are as confusing and convoluted as in the previous versions, and leave many loopholes to be exploited. This can result in a one sided beatdown for either the traitor or the explorers, which isn't fun at all. The flavor text for winning on many of the haunts, at least for the explorers, are dull and boring, taking out part of the satisfaction of victory. We also get to the haunts far too quickly, leaving us ill prepared for the haunt. The upper floor is basically a death trap because of how many omen rooms there are, and me and my friends have to avoid it like the plague ... MoreOverall, I loved the new designs, the are beautiful, as well as the new way to figure out which haunt it will be, as well as many of the new mechanics. We had to add a rule where we can choose to ignore the haunt 3 times in order to have enough time to prepare ourselves, as there really aren't that many tiles, especially on the upper floor, meaning more of a chance to get the omen cards. Me and my friends ended up getting a grand total of zero event cards on our first game before the haunt started. That's just completely ridiculous! We got absolutely wrecked because there literally wasn't anything we could do with our nonexistent items and stats. Overall I somehow ended up still enjoying it, although it definitely needed some improvements. Should be rating it 3 stars though to be honest.

I got Hasbro Gaming - Avalon Hill Betrayal at House on the Hill and I love it. I had never played before so at first it took a lot of reading and figuring out to get started. But once we figured it out we all had a lot of fun. The game board and pieces are well very made. I like the variety of characters. If you love everything horror related you should try this game. It will have you on the edge our seat waiting for your next move. Game night with friends is now a thing at my house.

The Avalon Hill betrayal at house on the hill third edition is such a fun game. I have played the first edition but the rules are much more clear and simple in the third edition. It is horror-based content and is better for older children as it can be complicated. This has new rule books and content. There are 50 different scenarios that haven't been seen before. The game describes itself as a haunted house traitor game which is exactly right. The game can be quick or can take hours. It can be very challenging but also very exciting. I think this is a great game for older children and adults.

I haven't played the new edition yet because my excitement quickly turned to dissappointment upon receiving the delivery. The edges of the box are damaged, the outer box was fine so I'm presuming this happened before transit. In addition to this, someone decided it would be a great idea to put stickers sealing the box instead of shrinkwrapping it. This leads to further damage as you need to remove each sticker to access the contents of the box. I've only punched a few of the pieces so far and seen damage on one already. The plastic tray doesn't fit the components great and feels really cheap compared to the one in the 2nd edition. I'll be returning this and hoping that they improve future prints when I buy it again because I love Betrayal at House on the Hill and ... MoreI haven't played the new edition yet because my excitement quickly turned to dissappointment upon receiving the delivery. The edges of the box are damaged, the outer box was fine so I'm presuming this happened before transit. In addition to this, someone decided it would be a great idea to put stickers sealing the box instead of shrinkwrapping it. I bought this in a bit of a hurry, looking for a family game for Christmas. The only criteria was to be teen+. This was one of the first suggestions in the results, and, under time pressure, I made a quick decision that it sounded good, and suitable to play with my 15 year old daughter, my 23 year old son, his girlfriend who would be staying with us for the first time, and myself (all board game fanatics) and my husband (less so). It wasn't exactly what I was expecting - I had somehow managed to overlook that it was slightly horror based, and when we opened it, I was worried it would freak my daughter and I out and keep us awake at night. However - in no way did it disappoint us. It has a slightly similar underlying idea to an old childhood favourite still played ... MoreI bought this in a bit of a hurry, looking for a family game for Christmas. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting - I had somehow managed to overlook that it was slightly horror based, and when we opened it, I was worried it would freak my daughter and I out and keep us awake at night. However - in no way did it disappoint us. It has a slightly similar underlying idea to an old childhood favourite still played (and remade in various incarnations) amongst all my family today - the now out of print Sorcerer's Cave - but built on this to add many new ideas and dimensions. The twists are clever - that one player, chosen by a random set of criteria, turns rogue at some point in the game, is an idea I've not seen in any of the bazillion games our family have played over 40+ years. That we could play this over and over and each time the scenario played would have a different story, a different layout, and a different set of sub-rules is also genius. We only had time to play twice before my son and his gf went home, but the two games were very different. All in, this is really good game pretty much unlike any other games we have. Although the way the game is played means play is different each time, the initial play is the same, and we picked this up very quickly from clear well presented instructions. My only negative comment would be that the little plastic markers used to mark attributes such as sanity and strength were too loose and got easily dislodged. I would absolutely recommend this game to a family with older or adult children, or to any family like mine who laughs and fights over board games and wine whenever grown siblings get together. Just be aware, it is a bit horror/ghosty in its storylines. Leave the lights on. But buy it.

Love the game, beautiful components, but…
14 August 2022

I ordered this from Hasbro Pulse the minute it was available for preorder, and it arrived safely and in great condition except the Traitor’s Tome is a little crunched up. Nothing game breaking, purely an aesthetic thing, but the game itself is absolutely phenomenal! The Haunts are easier to navigate and the artwork is gorgeous. The gameplay is sped up slightly and overall, it’s incredible. It doesn’t completely replace 2nd edition and Widow’s Walk, but for new players, it’s an excellent entry to the series 😀

Quality service and product!

I was super worried about ordering through Iwoot, lots of negative reviews online in regards to shipping and quality control. Glad to be able to say that none of these reviews hold weight based on my experience. Goods arrived within a week of ordering, (I’m in Australia for reference) and the product is exactly as described. 3rd edition of Betrayal looks and feels great in terms of quality, gameplay has been streamlined and is thoroughly enjoyable :)

Rare horror game
9 April 2022

I received the Betrayal at House on Haunted Hill 3rd edition. I have never played this game before. Great for groups of people that have plenty of time (ie: beginning of pandemic). Minimum 3 players, maximum of 6. It is recommended for ages 12 and up. I have a house full of teenage pranksters that kept them busy for a couple hours. It’s a little creepy, but if you are into horror stuff, I’m sure you will like it. This version has 50 different haunts and 12 new characters that the previous versions did not have. Based on my kids engagement, they do recommend it.

Scenario game that calls for attention to detail
29 April 2022

Avalon Hill Betrayal at House on the Hill is a great mystery game for your family or friends! We played with our neighbors for the first time and it took about 2-3 hours to play. It says 60-90 on the box, so I’m sure after the first time, it becomes easier. The concept is fun as it makes you utilize your critical thinking skills. The game had quite a few instructions and can be difficult at first. I would recommend playing with older teens and adults. The playing board is small and compact to accommodate any space. The pieces were good quality and the scenarios were creative. Overall, this was a great and unique game to play with family and friends!

Who needs TV ?
9 April 2022

I absolutely had a fun time with this board game. My husband has played another edition before and I am a new player to this game, but we both loved it. The game needs at least three players. There are players who are the heroes and if that isn't your style, then you can be the traitor that works actively to sabotage the game. You get to control monsters and have your own playbook. The game rules are detailed and easy to follow. I love how each character has his and her own story. I love the artwork in each room, and the scenarios that comes with it. We played for hours during family time. The longer you play, the better it gets.
