I heard about BioLite while I was a Scout Master in 2012 from a fellow Scouter. I purchased one for myself after hearing about his success. I have used it over and again. The first ones were not as powerful as the newer ones, but I still enjoy taking it in the backcountry and not having to worry about fuel. It does take time to start when the weather is damp or in the snow, but once going, it does well. I raced my Scouts to boil a liter of water against their Jetboil. The Jetboil was faster by a minute, but it used a lot of fuel.I did make a shield to guard the power unit during high winds. That would be the only drawback I have with the CampStove.

Great concept! Not for all camping styles however.

That is a lot to hoof when backpacking. An alcohol stove with a week of fuel will be under 6 ounces. A gas backpacking stove will be around a pound and the weight falls off for both as the fuel is spent. This is not a concern if you are car camping or canoeing around. For car camping you don't need a back up charger and for both you can carry a propane stove with two burners, easy. To top off the battery took me longer than was necessary to boil the water but if you need the electricity you'll burn it longer to get the charge I guess. The weight of the stove is more than a backup battery for a phone and I can get 3 charges out of my backup. My guess is backpacking solar panels weigh in under 2 pounds but I don't own any so I can't say for sure.Bottom line, for me, this is a cool concept but the weight makes me balk at using it for backpacking again unless the hike is under 5 miles or so. Would I buy it again? Probably. It is a good backup stove for sure. But it is more for the gadget factor than its applicability for the way I camp. For myself it is more of a solution in search of a problem to solve.

Great stove!

I'm skeptical of gadgets, and I bought the CampStove 2.0 kit without inflated expectations. The stove, while a bit heavy to pack around on typical hiking/camping trips, isn't too heavy. I took the full kit on a overnight trip and grilled steaks that night, made pancakes and eggs and coffee the next morning and had zero issues with performance. I should note that it was 55-60 degrees F that weekend, so I didn't not get a test in wintery conditions. As for the charging, I was able to get a fire going that kept charge quality meter between 3 and 4 consistently. The fan never seemed to affect the overall charge of the battery. When I plugged my phone in, the charge started depleting quickly. When I plugged my phone in, the charge started depleting quickly. To be fair, I did plug in my iPhone and was watching a movie on it at the same time. I wanted to stress the system. Typically, I carry a dumb phone and a separate GPS device. The dumb phone didn't affect the charge at all.As for the smokeless operation. I found it very smokey at first. After experimenting a bit I learned that I was stacking the wood in a way that hindered air flow and caused undue amounts of smoke. Once I figured that out, I was able to eliminate the majority of smoke and quickly get clean burns. If you've ever used a wood gasification stove with success, build your fire that way. That said, there is no way to eliminate smoke when starting the fire. That's just physics and is an unrealistic expectation. Once you're past that stage, the burn is clean and hot. There is some discoloration of the plastic closest to the stove body, but it's minimal and there is no sign of melting.Overall, I am very happy with the stove and will buy more BioLight products.

OG Stove
7 June 2021

I got my OG Biolite in 2012 when they launched. Its been boxed up for probably three years I need to break it out and see if she fires right up. Used it probably 4 weeks /year until we bought the Glamper. I never had an issue other than having to empty ash often which only a problem when using it for a heat source, rather than a cooking source. Also IT IS HUNGRY, there's very little walking around working on your campsite when running it. it takes nearly constant attention. Those two things should be expected in a unit this size. A #10 can full of pellets will easily get you through a weekend of cooking. Never have I had issues with charging (I wish I had the 3 amp) either the battery or outside components. Though that will cost you more fuel. ALL IN ALL I love it.

Perfect outdoor companion

I bought this stove for my hunting, fishing and kayaking trips. I wanted something that I could leave packed in my gear for an extended period of time without having to worry about fuel storage, leakage or any of that. I also really liked that all the parts of the kit work together and pack down very nicely into a easily portable package. I keep it in a single dry bag that I can stow in my kayak, or just scoop up and throw in the rig to go hunting or fishing. It works splendidly with sticks, pinecones and foraged materials, but I prefer burning pellets. They're easy to start, burn for a long time, burn evenly and are easy to add when cooking long meals or just wanted to keep fire going. I was so pleased with my Biolite, that I bought one for each of my son-in-laws!

Real good, except

It's great. What an idea. Well done to the development people. It does exactly what it's designed to do. Right from first receiving my biolite campstove 2 I used it to not only provide myself with electricity to charge my phone but also a few other people. As well as to keep others warm and my self. Everytime I go out on a bike ride, especially in the evening or at night, I take my stove with me and I'm always saving someone from a dead phone or the elements. My one issue is the fire owl itself. This is made very well with the best materials but it's just a bit small. The fuel is often used up quickly especially with the fan going. I've been thinking over a few plans I my head to make a bigger bowl to burn the wood in. Even if it was shaped like a bell with the top ... MoreIt's great. What an idea. Stove is great, powerbank - not so much.
1 March 2022

The stove works perfectly, it's fuel efficiency is way higher than expected, but...The only thing not ok is the capacity of the internal powerbank. The specs say that it's 3200mAh. Usually the real capacity is approx 2/3 of the one declared, because of the energy consumed for powerbank's electronics. So - the 10 000 mAh powerbank in reality "juices up" other devices with no more than 6600 mAh. In case of CampStove 2+ the real capacity is only 50% of declared, not 2/3.Take a look at the photo - the device was charged from zero to full, with mAh meter attached to the cable. It shows only 1563 mAh transferred from power grid do the powerbank. It should be at least 2000 mAh, considering the "power cost" of powerbank's electronics. That is my only disappointment. ... MoreThe stove works perfectly, it's fuel efficiency is way higher than expected, but...The only thing not ok is the capacity of the internal powerbank. Very handy piece of gear!
10 April 2022

Excited to finally get one of these to add to my camping gear! We did a 3-week trip on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon last November and I used one of these to charge my phone and Garmin in-reach after my charging bank ran out of juice. I'm really happy to have something to both charge needed safety equipment and heat water that isn't dependent on fuel canisters, just use whatever is available to burn! You do need to watch it to be sure you are in the correct temperature range but I didn't find that difficult. Even heated soup while charging!Highly recommend if you will be off-grid for any length of time! 4-stars because it is a bummer that you can't replace the fan should it go out...

Won't charge Samsung S21 Ultra
10 October 2022

Won't charge Samsung S21 Ultra, or other "fast charging" devices apparently.I reached out to support to find out why, and they explained that it's a "compatibility issue" between the two devices, that "S21 is a fast charging 25w, the CampStove2+ is only 3w", and "CampStove 2+ cannot support fast charging smart phones." I've tried turning off the "fast charging" battery settings in my phone but no luck.So 2 stars for me, because yes the stove is nice... but I literally got it to just charge my S21 Ultra. Honestly now, it's a $150 piece of bulky extra equipment in my camping supplies - waste of money.
