There has been considerable discussion on what the actual runtime is on the BioLite 425, including some reports of very short runtimes of less than 30 minutes. The manufacturer claims 4 hours of battery life on “high”. Earlier this week I received two lamps (one for me, one for the wife) and thought I would run them through a battery life test.I stopped the clock when the light became noticeably dim – to the point it no longer functioned well. I found that you had about ten minutes after it started warning you that the batter was low (it flickers three times) before it went into the super dim mode. I’m guessing this is what BioLite calls the “reserve” mode. The spot mode is quite bright. Very easy to do a trail run at night. The flood setting is bright enough to walk with but doesn’t cast enough light to run by. Still, it provides enough light to read by or make dinner at a campsite.Flood only:Lamp A: 4 hours 20 minutesLamp B: 5 hours*Spot only:Lamp A 4 hours 25 minutesLamp B 5 hours 25 minutes*Flood & spot:Lamp A 4 hours 10 minutesLamp B 4 hours 1 minute*For some reason, Lamp B was somewhat dimmer than Lamp A over the duration of these two tests. Not surprisingly, it was able to last longer since it was drawing less current.Overall, pretty solid results. If you are getting noticeably shorter runtimes, you likely have a defective unit. I didn’t check how dim you would have to reduce the brightness to get to the 60 hour mark, but the lamps are bright enough in spot mode to dial back the setting some. I could see 8 hours as very doable. I was a little surprised that the flood and spot together lasted almost as long as each individually. I think the power to each is reduced a little when operating both lamps together.All-in-all, I like this headlamp. No new electronics should be brought to the market in 2023 utilizing micro USB, so I was glad BioLite added USB C to this model at least. Love the rear red lamps. There are two in the back and only one on the front. So if you are doing some night photography or astronomy, you might want to spin the headlamp around and use the two red lamps on the back. Note the red lamps are “flood” and not a “spot” lamp.

The 2 options of brightness for the forward light are great! Perfect amount of dim mode for not blinding your amigos in close quarters, and VERY BRIGHT when you need to turn it too 11! But the back light on the rear placed battery pack is the show stopper on the 425! WHAT!? Great weight displacement as well as the rear high visibility light allows the 425 to stay secure during intense movements and it has kept me safe on my night sprints! So stoked on this product!

The HeadLamp 425 is underwhelming. I like that I'm able to dim the light in each mode - but at the same time this makes it harder to predict the battery life in each mode and the battery life is very underwhelming. It's good that it has a rear red light. USB-C pass through charging is convenient. The build quality is underwhelming. The headband loosens too easily and when tightened, it pulls the battery pack to one side. I'm concerned that this will become e-waste long before it's time. Why did I buy it? Price, and I needed a headlamp quickly when my Petzl died.Would I recommend this to anyone? No.What would I like to see? Improved battery life and build quality with view to longevity and user-repairability.I'm willing to talk more about this to BioLite if ... MoreThe HeadLamp 425 is underwhelming. If you're anything like me, your forehead is curved. Other well-reviewed headlamps I've used are flat. With those flat headlamps, if I secure the headlamp to my head snugly enough that it won't fall off whilst I move, the flat back of the lamp presses into my forehead in a very uncomfortable way, leaving a mark. The designers of this BioLite headlamp took into account that most users' foreheads are curved and made the lamp portion... curved. The lamp itself is nestled into a soft, but durable, fabric strap. This, combined with the aforementioned curvature, ensures a comfortable fit and no unsightly forehead mark. If you have a flat forehead, perhaps a different headlamp would be right for you. The first headlamp I received dims significantly after less than 5 minutes of use. I can hold the button to make go back to full brightness, but after a few minutes it dims again. Biolite support has been helpful, but sent me a second headlamp that does the same exact thing. I'm not sure if there is a bad batch of headlamps or there's a problem with the product overall. It is frustrating because this would be a great product. I am in contact with Biolite and will update this review if they are able to resolve the issue somehow.
Purchased this from an REI staff recommendation after telling them the main purpose was for running. Running in the city, I love this lamp. However, as others have said, it has an exceptional short battery. The dimming happens quickly. With a full charge the light dims after 20-30 minutes. When it dims, it is a generic low flood light. What I love about this light is the fit, comfort, and red blinking back light. If it did not have the back light I would easily take this back simply due to the short battery. I will only use this for city runs. I just cannot trust this in the backcountry or for trail runs.
This is the second Biolite 425 I have had. Sent first one back due to a faulty battery. It would go from full charge to no charge in a few minutes. Then it would charge back to “full” in minutes, and again only last a few minutes. The second one arrived half charged. Turned it on, and in about thirty seconds went to 25%, the a few seconds started blinking, indicating it was almost dead. Sending back. I also own 330 and 750 and have not had any battery issues with either model. Would not recommend the 425
This is my second Biolite headlamp and loving the new model and color options. I’m the type to just carry a headlamp with me all the time, and what jumped out to me most is how comfortable it is - I honestly forgot I was wearing it. The different light intensities give you a nice range and I haven’t had to charge it yet even after several hours of use. I used the lower intensity and red light around camp in Sequoia-Kings, and bumped it up to the highest intensity to wrap up a hike after dark and work around rope systems in search and rescue. The headlamp feels super lightweight and the strap stays securely on my head, even when running or bumping around ropes and rocks! Would highly recommend!
I am really stoked with the performance of the HeadLamp 425. I used it during a 4:00 AM pre-race prep for a runner I was crewing last weekend. It's super slim and low-key, which makes it great for tossing in a running pack or pocket.I found the dimmest setting was plenty for poking around camp in the morning and packing up the car, while the brightest setting was seriously bright - like illuminate all of camp, cars, look for micro-trash serious. The fit was snug and comfortable, while the button and settings were easy to use with gloves on. I also appreciated that even with the light swiveled down, it never sagged or bounced on my head as I moved around. Can't wait to take it out for some dusky/evening trail runs this winter!
I have been impressed with this little powerhouse of a headlamp. In my opinion, a great piece of gear is forgotten about during use. The uniquely designed strap and front-back weight balance means it disappears on your head immediately. Comfortable, easy to adjust, and no dreaded bouncing while running! It only took a week for me to fall in love with the HeadLamp 425. This light tackles it all in stride, from an early morning run, to a fieldwork campsite, to some after-hours mountain biking on technical trails. The battery life has been great so far and I cannot emphasize enough how much I like the simplicity of the single button mode selector.
