First impression. Not as well made as my previous Workmat plus. Instructions were next to useless. Using the workmate. With the one handle operation with the plastic belt drive it was impossible to tightened the jaws enough to grip the wood. After going on the forum I found it was a common complaint and could only be resolved by disabling or removing the plastic belt. This done with both handles operating independently it solved the problem. Because of the functionally built in it feels very loose and flimsy. Conclusion. Its quality and functionally do not come close to my old workmate plus.

It performs this latter task reasonably well facilitated by the 3 position moveable jaw which provides enough room for the router to hang through. In other respects the new Workmate is very disappointing because generally the construction is under-engineered. The top is too thin and bends under light pressure so I intend to bond a supplementary layer of plywood to this to improve the overall stiffness. The handles for operating the vice have too much play, are made from soft plastic and have a very sloppy feel - I anticipate that they will fail prematurely, time will tell. I had a Black and Decker bench for 18 years. It never let me down and used it till its time was up. I had absolutely no problem replacing it with the same brand and have to say that Im pleased that the features remain virtually the same albeit with a slightly modern twist. It provides a great stable platform and has a robust but relatively light to carry construction. I delighted with it.
I had to give up on the assembly instructions which were a series of diagrams without words which seemed to bear no resemblance to the parts which came out of the box. However there are loads of videos on YouTube showing you exactly how to assemble it, so Id advise you to head straight there for instructions, and its actually quite straightforward to do once you know which order to do it. Once assembled, Ive loved this workbench. Its sturdy, and grips on to any length of wood well (Ive been cutting 3.5m lengths of wood and it holds them steady. And the bench folds up very smoothly into a deceptively flat shape - great for hanging up on, or leaning against a shed/garage wall without taking up much space.
Having previously been the proud owner of an earlier model which lasted in excess of 25 years I have little faith in this new model with its plastic bits and relatively lightweight steel matching my earlier product. Pros & Cons:- Horizontal clamping facility possibly useful however the same facility is achieved with G clamps which will not malfunction. Plastic parts have replaced sturdy metal parts, not very reassuring of a long lifespan, accompanied with a warning of not to tighten too much. Night extending feet no longer lock off when in the closed position. Have had to adapt using original components to secure the rear table in a fixed position. Would not recommend at any price.
Purchase replaced a workmate that is around 40 years old. This new one isn't as sturdy as the old one, but the structure is basically the same. The changes to the winding gear, and removable deck have not added to the product in my opinion, but it's still an essential in the garage/garden shed. However, the instructions are absolutely useless, and Black & Decker ought to be ashamed of them. This has been a common theme in other reviews, so why do they ignore them, and fail to re-write them? It was only after one & a half hours of frustration that I resorted to u-tube. My biggest regret is that I didn't do it sooner! It's pretty simple from then on.

The primary reason for not giving it a 5-star rating was the problem of assembly. Fixing the handles was, I felt unnecessarily difficult. I am not happy about hammering any piece of equipment hard, particularly when it is brand new, and I had to hit the metal dowel pins very hard indeed to get them in. Another problem was that the 'assembly instructions' were simply a waste of paper and ink. It was only by constant referral to my old one to see how it went together that I finally succeeded. That aside, I am a reluctant D-I-Yer and have used it only once so far, but I would think that it will be up to whatever I require it to do, plastic 'lugs' notwithstanding.
As a regular DIYer I have used a Black & Decker Workmate for many years. My old Workmate finally became unserviceable after more than 30 years of usage. (The tilt section broke off the main body) I have replaced it with this WM825 and I am very impressed. The quality is as good and has even been improved upon. Portable work benches dont get better than this. I love it and would recommend it to anyone whom should ask. NB. Even though the tilt section is no longer attached to my old bench I have kept it as it is now a perfect height to hold larger pieces with my newer version. You dont just throw away this quality)
