This latest version of the work mate is sadly lacking from my previous one. The metal frame is made from thinner material and the appears to be smaller and thinner. The clamping mechanism has changed so now the rear section moves forwards and backwards but I don't think that will make much difference. My real gripe is in the terrible instructions because you now have to assemble it yourself. There are no writteninstructions, just small vague pictures with th parts labelled with letters. That would not be so bad if the parts list was also labelled with letters. I had to retrospectively go over. the instructions to figure out which part has which number ( see photo).and I went online to watch some youtube videos to figure out what was meant to happen. Unfortunately there are no assembly videos for this model but I managed to work it out by watching the workmate plus video. Also be aware you will need a metal faced hammer (a claw hammer will do) to hammer in the little pins that hold the handles on. There is also a small diagram that looks like it is implying that you need to cut a thread into the nylon adjusters but I think it is meant to tell you NOT to overtighten the bolts or you will strip the threads.I have given this product 3 stars as it does actually work as a portable workbench, despite being cheaper and flimsier than its predecessor. I will have to wait and see how long it will last.

Assembly was fairly straight forward, although as others have commented, the exploded diagram instructions could be improved upon! The bench is robust and well made with no sharp edges to the metal frame that I could find. It is well balanced, folding compactly for storage and transportation. I bought this to replace an old 'cheapo' work bench that had seen better days. For basic DIY this Black and Decker will do nicely. The foot pad will alow me to steady the bench when needed. I am looking forward to using it!

Having read through the most critical reviews before buying this I settled down to assemble it with my tablet on standby, as I was braced to look up some YouTube guides based on what I had read. It wasn't necessary. The required assembly was both minimal and straightforward and the instructions provided couldn't have been clearer - I'm genuinely at a loss to understand why people have been leaving such scathing reviews, particularly in relation to the illustrations.Anyone buying this product presumably has, at the very least, rudimentary DIY skills so nothing here should be problematic. Even the dreaded pin insertion is way easier than some of these reviews would have you believe..Mine is now happily folded in my shed and ready to see some action. I have used two workmates in my life. One of the old ones which is my dad’s. It is a lot beefier than this one and none of its parts are plastic save for the wedges on the top and the little cone bits on the vice screws (unlike this one where the load bearing screw brackets are plastic, which I am not a fan off). One thing I have always found irritating about these is the fact there are two vice screws, meaning it can be a bit difficult to ensure you are clamping dead square. Even the slightest uneven pressure can cause slipping when cutting/chiselling which is a bit annoying. I understand having a central screw wouldn’t really work with the design as it would get in the way of anything being clamped so this is more just an observation. It works well as a saw ... MoreI have used two workmates in my life. Even the slightest uneven pressure can cause slipping when cutting/chiselling which is a bit annoying. I understand having a central screw wouldn’t really work with the design as it would get in the way of anything being clamped so this is more just an observation. It works well as a saw horse but try to plane anything with a hand plane and the weight of the bench seems to be less than the force of the cutting iron, even with a razor sharp plane, making the whole bench move. It is not a super rigid construction and does have a little play in it when locked upright, the vice also has play in it so when you clamp the bench top doesn’t always stay flat. I do quite fine work which this isn’t really suitable for but that’s not the benches fault as it was probably never built with fine work in mind. The bench has been satisfactory and I have used it to construct a much larger andy fully wooden Paul Sellers style work bench. I have cut mortises and tenons fine with it and not had any gaps in the joints so it doesn’t seem to hinder accuracy (although as it is not the most solid, chopping mortises is not it’s strongest area as a lot of energy is dissipated in the frame movement).I don’t believe I had a problem with using the instructions as others seem to have had. But then as I have used one before I had a pretty good idea of how they are constructed. It’s a bit shorter than the older one I used, so repetitive use did do a bit of a number on my back with having to bend over to chop mortises and the like, and I am only 5’ 10”. So I am glad it is not my main bench anymore in that respect.Overall I would give 4 stars, it’s good value for money. It does everything I would reasonably expect from it. Only let down is the plastic load bearings parts which make me nervous, and the lower height which can be a bit harsh on the back. But I will happily continue to use it as a portable bench when I need it.
This product family has been around for many decades. My father in law had one which lasted for years and years. My own 2022 version has not lived up to the grand history. The fold down mechanism does not operate correctly. It's clear to see what should happen, but the manufacturing is simply not accurate enough and gets stuck or jammed and often takes me several attempts before success. Sometimes, a second person is needed to assist. The assembly instructions are awful, but thankfully found lots of online videos to help with that. Maybe this is just a fault with mine, but I doubt it judging from the materials and construction. I'll keep it as when it's assembled it does offer a good variety of securing work. It's probably just a sign of the times that everything ... MoreThis product family has been around for many decades. My father in law had one which lasted for years and years. Bought this to replace an old one of years. Easy to assemble but if you struggle I would suggest returning the product and calling a tradesman to do the job you bought the workbench for.Overall quality looks ok but I doubt the wooden surface will take the beating my old one did. Hopefully will be able to find replacements when their needed. Basically my old one was 2 planks of solid hardwood. This has been manufactured with 3 layers of cheap bamboo or something similar. But for the price you pay for what you get basically.I am sure replacing the current wood surface with something more sturdy at assembly wouldn’t break anyone’s budget B&D.
I bought this hoping it would be a simple workbench for basic tasks, it is without a doubt the worst piece of equipment I have ever bought. Firstly the construction requires you to insert two pins with a hammer. These pins are vastly too tight and require so much force, that I ended up damaging the product trying to get them in. Secondly the top wooden piece near the foot stand is supposed to screw into the metal railings, however, one of the holes has been drilled too large on the metal railings and the screw just pulls out. Hence if you pull up on the workbench at all the whole thing just falls apart. Can't believe Black and Decker would release such a badly designed and shoddy piece of equipment.
During my 45+ yrs of diy I've come across some terrible instructions but those for this product take the top billing. Not only are there no written guidelines there's just a few nondescript pictures that bear little relation to the construction process. The holes in the pics do not match those in the product and you have to make your own mind up as to what the pictures actually mean. Terrible for what should be an easy process. The bench itself is great.
I mean it's only got 2 stars because 1 seems harsh for something that lets me clamp some wood in it and saw. But the whole thing is so flimsy and we almost couldn't even assemble it because its instructions are so terrible. No text, just really poorly detailed pictures. The pins for the handles required some serious bashing with a hammer - had to get a stronger person than me to help. The step is needed because the whole thing will just move when you try to saw if you're not holding it down with one leg. It's clunky and even painful to pick up and move when folded; there's no real place to grip it when you pick it up, so the metal hurts my hands. Really disappointed by this given the brand name and how it was rated like third in a top 10 list of best foldable ... MoreI mean it's only got 2 stars because 1 seems harsh for something that lets me clamp some wood in it and saw. It’s Black & Decker, it’s a work mate, it’s quality. As a Painter & Decorator I won’t use this often, but occasionally a job (like the one I got this for) requires something to support cutting timber. In this case a loft hatch, previously loft flooring. It does exactly what it should, and at a great price. There is some assembly required, but is easy enough. Over all I’m very happy with this purchase.
