I was very excited about these poles. My wife and I both got these poles after deciding to move from telescopic to collapsable poles. We had been using Komperdell telescopic poles for 15+ years.Unfortunately, the locking mechanism broke on one of my BD poles 6 days into a 11 day Alpine hut hiking trip. The SAME thing happened to my wife's poles as well on day 11. This is the EXACT failure described by numerous other reviewers and shown in some of the pictures.Clearly, this is a design flaw and absolutely makes these great poles useless. I was able to patch my pole together with a zip tie and a wooden plug stuck in the hole for the remainder of my trip, but I could not fold the pole at all. I Bought these as my first set of serious backpacking poles. Good brand, lightweight, etc. Black Diamond is supposed to be high quality stuff. Mine ended up failing where the spring clip locks the entire pole together. Too much stress on one tiny point of failure. To be fair, I’ve probably hiked 150+ miles with them. But they had hundreds of miles left in them, save for the failure of the spring clip button. I wouldn’t recommend these particular style of pole. I’ll go back to the telescoping style poles.

These poles were awesome while they were intact. Not the most comfortable, but good enough for 50k's and long trail days. No real complaints there.The complaints come with the durability. I had less than 100 miles on these, and the mechanism that locks them open would no longer lock on both poles. Then, one of the pieces that locks them open fell out. And, later on that descent, the tip snapped off of one of them. I didn't notice for awhile so I'm not sure when it happened. They were still vaguely usable, but they broke during the part when I want them the most.I'm heavy on my poles and use them aggressively to help reduce the strain on my knees. They seem stouter, and are only 4oz heavier so I am hopeful I have no more pole issues.

I needed new poles for an international trip. These poles are lightweight, easy to put together, and easily adjustable. However, I have arthritis in my hands, and especially my thumbs, so I found the small width of the handle uncomfortable. I had to grip tighter to hold on. The straps are not soft or padded so they were not the most comfortable either. I am not sure if I will take them and make adjustments by padding the straps , or bring my old, heavier poles. If you don’t have my issue, they are great!

I say that only to highlight that I know how to take care of my equipment and what is user error vs. faulty production.My first set of the Black Diamond FLZ poles failed 9 days into their use. The tip broke off on a relatively flat trail exposing the cord that keeps the tension on the pole. I kept utilizing the pole when the tip broke as I was in a remote section of the Italian Alps. Predictably, due to this exposure, the cord eventually was worn down from use and snapped, rendering one pole useless.REI graciously and quickly replaced the pair upon my return to the US. I've just purchased a pair of Leki poles today.
I like my new poles a lot. I also have the BD Trailback non Z poles. Just to share some info. My Z poles are 2023 aluminum version, the baskets have a smaller hole than the regular non Z pole BD baskets. The clip on black snow baskets that are available at some retailers for the Z poles will also not fit properly, unless you maybe remove the tiny blue baskets first. They will slip off the bottom or top if you just clip them on. Those snap on snow baskets actually fit the 2018 version with the black non removable mini baskets that have a little flange above the basket to prevent the snow basket from sliding off. You can adjust the tension on the Z poles by adjusting the little grey adjuster between the bottom and middle pole section when the poles are collapsed. I ... MoreI like my new poles a lot. I am not sure why BD does not make screw on baskets with a proper thread in them, as I have some non BD baskets that screw on and of my non Z poles with ease, while the BD baskets require a little force and eventually will strip out and be a loose fit, requiring replacement.
Sadly the newest version of this pole is no good in wet weather country. I had a pair of Distance FLZ for about 7 years and loved them. I tripped over my poles last year and bent one to the point I could no longer use it. I went and purchased the new version of the Z pole. 3 times I have returned them under warranty and received a new pair. The push button used to hold the pole straight and used to release the pole to fold broke on each of the 3 set I used. It took me until my 3rd set of poles to figure out that the poles worked perfectly in dry weather, however after wet hikes, even though I did my best to dry to poles out, the mechanism became stiff and then failed completely. Black Diamon, please fix the change you made so the metal inside survives damp conditions.

They're all aluminum and very light with a decently comfortable grip and I personally prefer this standard wrist strap design and material more than the ones found on their Trail and Alpine series. It does its job just fine and dries fast. My poles (105-125cm) weighed about 215g each (15oz total) with the mini baskets which is a little over spec but I'm happy with that considering they're all aluminum. Usually poles this light are Carbon Fiber which requires a bit more diligence and care. As of this writing REI has an incorrect weight published of 12.7oz. BD actually markets these as having a weight of 14.7oz for the pair (210g ea).On the downside I found the grips a little small in girth and I personally dont have big hands so something to keep in mind. I also prefer cork but these are built around saving weight so I understand why they have used, and continue to use, EVA foam for this series.All in all whether you're a trail runner looking for poles or a hiker looking for a very lightweight yet sturdy pole I'd recommend giving these some consideration.
Solid, lightweight, strong and very packable. I love these trekking poles - a huge improvement over my Lekis from 25 years ago. I find the poles to be very strong and solid, and I'm a 6'4" guy leaning on them. You do need to learn how to set them up extended. The directions are not super clear and I had to watch a video on YouTube. But once you figure it out, they are easy and very strong. I think the people that have trouble are not getting the poles fully extended until the silver locking pin pops out to secure the telescoping sections. These poles Z-fold to be very compact. I find them to be so much better than poles that only telescope.

As a result, the pole length would slip during use, which is unacceptable when relying on them for stability when descending steep, uneven terrain. I tightened the screws, which helped, but they would loosen over time. I’m 130 lbs; it was worse for my friend, who is 180 lbs, and has the same poles.They are light, and since they collapse and fold down, are very compact and packable.
