This camera performs as expected. Beautiful image quality, awesome dynamic range and color reproduction, lots of recording options. the most intuitive menu system I've seen on any camera, plenty of A/V inputs, easy to use hardware. It has a lot of good things going for it. This was my first cinema camera and it was a matter of minutes to figure out how to operate it and get to shooting. This thing is a beast in a relatively small package. Like many others have said, this camera is not a low light beast like the Sony A7 cameras. The ISO only goes up to 1600. I haven't found that to be a problem though, and a lot of my filming is done in low light places like clubs and lounges. I shoot almost all handheld (not shoulder mounted), and the Ursa Mini's size and weight is very manageable for that style of filming. The only things I've attached are a Sigma 18-35, a top handle, a Blackmagic Video Assist, and an Aputure AL-MX light. I replaced the stock side handle with a SmallRig side handle as it fits my hand better. It's a pretty simple setup for mostly run & gun type of filming. I highly recommend getting a CFast to SSD kit and recording to SSD's. It is much, much cheaper than recording to CFast cards, and it works just as well. I'm using the CCtech Cfast 2.0 to 2.5" Sata3 SSD mountand so far so good. It is permanently attached between the camera and V-mount plate, like Blackmagic's OEM SSD adapter. If you want to save some money, you can jerryrig a SSD enclosure with a CFast to SSD cable and USB power. It looks ugly but it's perfectly functional. Overall, the Ursa Mini 4.6k is an exceptional value. I highly recommend it if this camera is within your budget and you don't need a ton of ISO boost.

Black Magic Design hits a home run with the UMPro!
27 March 2017

This is the camera I was waiting for Black Magic to build! Like their other cameras, it is constructed like a tank; metal body, heavy duty connections, quality components and beautiful finish. I have owned the 4K production camera, pocket cinema camera and mini cinema camera. Of course, they are all substantially different but this model has a highly professional look and feel. The addition of an SD storage option along side the CFAST slots is perfect for those that will not always be shooting in 4K/4.6K RAW. It is easy to switch between the two storage types. I'm already using my wide angle lenses without filter threads in bright scenes, thanks to the built in ND filter wheel. The menu system is highly intuitive with touch screen management. I'm already using my wide angle lenses without filter threads in bright scenes, thanks to the built in ND filter wheel. The menu system is highly intuitive with touch screen management. There is redundancy throughout the camera for control of virtually every aspect of the camera. If you are familiar with the BMD 4.6K sensor, you know it will not shoot in the dark, but with fast lenses, it is impressive just how little light you can work with. I was immediately impressed by the feel of the flip out screen. The articulation is solid and secure. The screen is bright, detailed and easy enough to use even in sunlight though for simple configuration changes, referring to the LCD screen on the outer portion of the flip screen might be easiest in bright sunlight. My only reservation with this camera is the mini toggle switches used for on and off operation and some setting controls. They seem solid enough but are mini switches and could get a LOT of use, especially the on/off switch. There are various and redundant ways to manage each of these operations though should any of these toggles eventually fail. The ability to use a hardware switch for on off operation is quite nice and the camera responds very quickly. There are NUMEROUS features, all outlined in the product description and specifications. Suffice to say, I am entirely pleased with the features and functionality of this new camera.

Great upgrade from URSA Mini Pro G1
24 May 2019

I run a production company and rental house in LA and had the original URSA Mini 4.6k, followed by the URSA Mini Pro G1 and now the URSA Mini Pro G2. The G2 has significantly less noise than the G1. ISO 800 looks clean. 1600 looks good, but some noise. 3200 has quite a bit of noise, but still usable in my opinion. Anything above 800 on the G1 was unusable and even at 800, if not exposed properly, some fixed pattern noise was visible. on the G2, at 800 and 1600, I see no FPN. At 3200, theres a little, but it looks more organic (its more like regular noise, rather than vertical lines). In my opinion, its still usable in a pinch. So were very happy with the improvement there. The increased frame rates are awesome! So were very happy with the improvement there. The increased frame rates are awesome! The color tones are excellent, perhaps slightly better than the G1, but not noticeably so.There are some things I would have liked BMD to do differently this time around. I dont like that they took away Cinema DNG from format options, as BMD RAW is still in its infancy, but seems great so far. Id have liked to a see a 3rd SDI output and an HDMI output (for people without SDI monitors, though ours are). The XLR inputs are in a stupid place, as is the USB-C port (behind the screen). I would also have liked them to make the cooling grills more accessible for cleaning, or better yet have a removable filter that can be replaced, and would mean stuff wouldnt get sucked into the body in the desert (for example). They also should have adjusted the rear SDI port position so that a P-TAP can be plugged into the battery plate on that side of the camera. As is, the P-TAP port on a plate gets blocked off when you use the SDI out. Weve now got around that problem with a Wooden Camera D-Box. They should also have made the monitor reversible, so you can easily change settings when the cameras shoulder mounted. Anyway, all minor gripes really and no camera is perfect. Id still highly recommend it as nothing can really compete in this price range. Our G1 URSA Mini 4.6k and Pro matched well with our Alexa (if exposed properly) on bigger shoots as a B Cam, but was used as a great A Cam too. We expect the G2 to be used even more.Bottom line, at this price point (and far above it honestly), there really isnt anything that produces such cinematic, beautiful footage. It really is a baby Alexa! Its not as forgiving as an Alexa, but if exposed properly, its near impossible to tell the difference between footage. For that reason alone, despite our minor gripes, it deserves 5 stars. A few things to note: its called a Mini, but this is not a light camera, especially when rigged up. Its still not a great low-light camera. If you plan on doing a lot of night shoots without proper lighting, you should probably look at other options.

My review got very long, so I decided to shorten it considerably and just say I absolutely love this camera. The colors, dynamic range, NDs, great internal audio, sharp screen, solid build quality, everything. So rather than repeat everyone else, heres the stuff I wish I knew before buying. But first, a little about me to give some credibility to my opinions here. Ive been using the Sony FS7 and FS5 for about a year and a half, but never liked their colors. Ive been shooting professionally since 2008 on everything from DV tape to a Red One MX, spending most of my career with DSLRs. Ive been using the Sony FS7 and FS5 for about a year and a half, but never liked their colors. The Ursa easily beats any other camera Ive worked with for my needs doing high end corporate video and the occasional short film.First, codecs. Coming from DSLRs, I was hugely concerned about file sizes. Rest assured, theyre not that crazy. On a 500GB SSD, I can shoot over 200 minutes of DCI 4k BRAW 8:1. This coded seems to be the sweet spot, as I cannot notice any loss of quality compared to other BRAW or DNG formats, but the files are tiny by comparison.Im using Blackmagics SSD recorder with great results. The drives work exactly like other cards, with the ability to play back media, format (OSX of EXFAT) and rename media in camera just like an SD or CFAST card. My pair of 500GB Samsung 850 EVO drives have been perfect, only dropping frames at lossless DNG 4.6K 30FPS, which I cant fathom a use for. Ive been shooting loads of 24, 30, 60, and 120FPS in 4K, 4.6K and 2K without a single issue in BRAW 8:1. These drives are not officially supported, but since they were available I gave them a try and plan to continue using them.Audio is surprisingly good! Easily on par with my DR100 MkII. My only complaint about audio is the lack of a limiter like the Tascam has. I have a background in pro audio (theatre, live music, and as an engineer in a recording studio) so setting levels is not a problem, its just nice to have an extra level of protection as the clipping in this camera sounds particularly hards.I dont mind the continuously rotating volume controls like I thought I would. It just doesnt bother me at all. Noise floor is great, preamps are strong, and phantom power works with everything from my B3 lav to large diaphragm condensers.Battery life is good with the IndoPro kit. A 98Wh lasts me 5-6 hours on set. I have no concerns at all about 2 batteries going all day, and they easily charge faster than this camera uses them. Plus, the camera can be powered from the wall, so in many cases I dont need any batteries at all.So in conclusion, I had nothing to worry about all along. It was a huge change moving from a DSLR to this, but absolutely worth it for my needs and I am extremely satisfied with my decision to upgrade to the Ursa Mini Pro.

I really want to love you
16 April 2021

Ok, I have been dreaming about this camera for ages. I wanted a pro body so I wasn't having to add on so many things to our DSLR rigs but my desires were also high. I needed 4k internal, good codec, non proprietary storage, and slo mo. This camera has it all! Shoots RAW which I thought was my save all for the future. WOW it burns through storage fast! No fault on its own, I just question now if I need that in my workflow. Color looks great to my eye. A little flat and desaturated, giving me room to go in and grade as I need. EF mount is standard so it took my existing lenses pretty well. Sigma 70-200 was having some peaking issues but that might be an easy fix, need to find out. Ok, here are my gripes. 1st- include a US power cord. It's $5 retail so I can't imagine ... MoreOk, I have been dreaming about this camera for ages. It's $5 retail so I can't imagine how cheap it is to include one. 2nd. build. Within two weeks an audio nob broke off. Easy fix hopefully but wow that was quick. 3rd- Media slots are exposed once the monitor is out in the open. I shoot in not perfect conditions so the fact that there is a port open there scares me. Imaging shooting in August on a New York hot sunny day and some AC rain comes down at the wrong moment.... I really wanted to love you , I hope the G3 will be what I need.

Professional User, best value
27 January 2017

Me: Professional Videographer, Director, Editor and DP for films Went to film school I own the Ursa Mini 4k, with prime lenses. Got this camera for an even lower price from a production house that bought two of them. Must say after a years use, extensively, this camera's image is 50x better than any DSLR. Now some of you will disagree, and thats fine, but for film, corporate and documentary stuff this gives a film look not video. All those a7s users will rage now, but the a7s is a nice image for weddings, and music videos and videography without the expertise of lighting but will still look videoish even with the best color grading. Some will say the a7s is good because you don't have to light, even at a wedding you need to light sometimes, just to achieve a nice ... MoreMe: Professional Videographer, Director, Editor and DP for films Went to film school I own the Ursa Mini 4k, with prime lenses. Some will say the a7s is good because you don't have to light, even at a wedding you need to light sometimes, just to achieve a nice depth of field. This camera is definitely not for the ignorant non-lighting, out of the box types. It's for professionals or students wanting to learn how to light properly for quality. Best Pros: 4K image quality is outstanding and very cinematic if done properly, the body of the camera is beautiful feels good and works well, XLR inputs on camera Best Uses: Controlled film sets, corporate sets, commercials, music videos, outdoors with IRND filter, with prime lenses. To achieve good lighting, you must light the blacks and what you want to be lite, this camera is about achieving contrast, then in post, you bring down the levels and you'll have a perfect image. NO FPN, no horizontal lines, if you do it properly. I have only experienced FPN once, when i literally had no light what so ever, I shoot nighttime downtown Toronto all the time with just available light and no FPN. I have not had problems with turning the camera on, or any of the ridiculous problems people are speaking about. Maybe they mistreat the camera? or maybe it was defective to begin with and I got lucky? I don't know. My fan is quiet, cannot even hear it in scorching hot weather or freezing cold (I have shot both).

Unreliable for professional use
22 March 2019

This camera produces a beautiful image, but sadly it is not reliable enough to use as a professional camera on productions. I suppose for hobbyists it's great. We were hoping we'd be able to report back positively, but after receiving the camera it displayed very prominent fixed noise pattern at 800ISO which was totally unacceptable and would never pass any QC. We contacted BMD support who were very quick to respond and replace the camera. We dove back into some tests on the new camera and lo and behold the same issue was happening. I'm waiting now to see what BMD's solution is, but we're now more than a month behind on our production and don't know when we'll have a functioning camera. I would have loved to give this camera a 5 star review- it's functionality and its image (minus the fixed noise pattern) are superb. In the beginning we decided to take a bit of a risk and purchase this camera for a production rather than rent an Alexa (an Alexa is roughly the same rental cost as an Ursa Mini Pro purchase for the shoot duration), but in the long run we are regretting it. I will update this review once we have a final solution that involves a functioning camera from Black Magic. After reading multiple negative reviews on various forums I am seeing that it's a crap shoot- some Ursa Mini Pro's have this issue, others don't. It seems like a Quality Control issue at Black Magic, which in my mind should be very easy to avoid- before shipping the cameras do a 2 second sensor test! It's just a shame we didn't luck out on 2 rolls of the dice so far, even after I was assured they had thoroughly tested the new camera.
