Oatmeal originated in Scotland centuries ago and was different from our modern rolled oats. A coarse meal was produced by slowly grinding the kernel between two large mill stones. Our Scottish Oatmeal is produced in the same old fashioned way and contains all the health giving nutrients of the best quality oats from which it was ground--the germ, the oil and the fiber. The result is a surprisingly unique and flavorful hot cereal.

This is one of those "must have" items in any pantry. The real challenge is making sure that you've got enough on hand. Kept in a cool, dry cupboard, it also enjoys a long shelf life without sacrificing significant nutritional value. This is one of those few grains which has proven over the centuries to be practical, nutritious and requires minimal effort to prepare - water and heat (with a grain of salt) ;)It also makes meatloaf (and other recipes) more filling and hardy. Livestock LOVE this stuff as much as people, without the chemicals and preservatives found in something with long storage life. It's not filler; it's a food stretcher which also adds calories and vital nutrition that's wholesome for man and beast alike! Truly "a gift from Heaven," according to the ancient Scots. The packaging is sturdy and sealed well. Once you've broken the seal, it's a good idea to use a zip lock-style bag to store the rest while you're consuming it, or some other form of airtight container of BPA-Free Plastic or glass. This is for two specific reasons:1. To preserve the oats against spoilage2. Cut off the scent, so bugs and rodents don't "find" it!It's also a good idea that once you open a bag, not to store it with the unopened bags, because once opened, it's always possible that it's eventually going to be found by those creatures you didn't purchase it for, and put your entire supply at risk of unauthorized consumption. All humor aside, it's a life-giving product which is delicious and nourishing. Every home should have some form of oatmeal! The other issue to note is that you do need to make sure that your bags are sealed when storing them. Some make use of an outer container which acts as a secondary barrier. The ancient Scots would use a glass jar to keep the bugs and rodents out.

Where has this been all my life?! I had never tried Scottish Oatmeal until I bought this on accident. Omg. What a happy accident! This stuff is so good and easy and quick to make. Its very filling and everyone in the house likes it. It is not useful for overnight oats but perfect for a nice hot breakfast or protein cookies.

Not sure why this is happening. Followed the directions EXACTLY for the microwave method. Product exploded after two tries! Liquid everywhere.Tried the stove top version; oatmeal was way too thick (followed the directions there, too) so I added milk to make it edible. Added salt too which helped.Ultimately I think we would like the oatmeal if we could figure out the right way to prepare it! Has anyone else had this issue?

This is creamy but also has great steel cut oats texture. Full of fiber and protein. Cooks very fast. Great for a healthy and delicious breakfast. For a well-balanced breakfast, consider these toppings:- PB and banana- chia seeds- greek yogurt- berries- maple syrup and butter- raisins and walnuts- shredded cheese mas poached eggEnjoy!
Creamy and delicious, and of course heart healthy. I'm not a fan of regular oatmeal, but Scottish Oatmeal tastes like a treat. Great with oat milk, berries, and a tiny amount of maple syrup. I just microwave for 5 minutes on 50% power. Delicious! (This is ridiculous. Why are they insisting I write more?)
This Scottish Oatmeal has a nice mix of textures (I think they use different milling process and mix some rolled and some cut oats - the texture is divine) The cereal has a gentle, slightly sweet flavor (to my taste). It cooks quickly and well. I follow the cooking directions on the package - all I do differently is that when the cereal seems to be thinking too much to stir I just turn off the heat, cover it with a tight fitting lit and let the steam/heat finish the cooking process ; these oats are so tender that this finish is nice. The cooked cereal keeps well in the frige and reheats nicely so I make up more than one serving at a time. I have also used these oats in recipes calling for rolled oats. I have ground the (uncooked cereal in a spice grinder to make nice fresh oat flour for making multigrain breads and it has worked nicely for that as well. It is an all around great ingredient. I highly recommend!
Having bought and used a variety of Bob's Red Mill oats for years, I saw the Organic Scottish Oatmeal and added it to my order on a whim. I am beyond grateful that I had such a whim. I've been eating this every morning as my own version of "instant" oatmeal, stirring in hot water which produces a creamy, chewy porridge that is the best oatmeal I've ever eaten, particularly since I don't enjoy mushy textures. I'm writing this review because I'm back to order more, intentionally, no whim necessary!
I love Scottish Oats. I was thrilled to find Bob's Red Mill Organic Oatmeal at iHerb. That's the kind I buy when I can find it, but it's often not available at the grocery store near my home. If you like oatmeal and haven't tried Socttish oats, do yourself a favor and try these.
So...I have tried every kind of oatmeal under the sun. This is hands down the best oatmeal of the century. I liked it so much that when my local grocery store ran out of it and two other sources no longer carried it, I tracked it down and bought a whole case. Who the heck would want to take this off their shelves?!It has a great flavor and because of the fact that it is stone ground and very fresh and organic, it has a texture that isn’t soupy, watery and flavorless but isn’t chunky and chewy like rubber. It’s this perfect texture. Period. My boyfriend feels the same way.I love to make it with unsweetened almond milk that gives it an extra milky smooth flavor without the diary plus a little salt. Have consumed about a U.S. tablespoon mixed with other Bob's Red Mill grains for several years in food jar for breakfast. Even travel with product in plastic baggies.(Amaranth, steel milled oatmeal, ground chia seeds, 1/4 tsp ground quinoa flakes (bitter), Scottish oatmeal, 10 grain cereal, ground flax seed, little butter; or whatever ground Bob's Red Mill product I have). Stir several times with hot water in food jar. Put on lid for heat. Won't upset stomach. Add some salt.m "Cooks" inside food jar in about 15-20 minutes. We use Food Jars and hot water. Mix several times, as mixture tends to glop up. All products currently hard to find. Stay regular. Drink lots of water. Excellent nutrition. Keeps hunger at bay. Soak Jar and spoon with bit of soap.
