Awesome tires! They roll very smoothly on the flats and are quite stable on descents. I ride the SoCal roads and get 1,200 miles on the back tire and 2,200 up front. I could probably stretch it a bit farther, but would rather change out a tire on a lazy Saturday afternoon than swap out a flat tube on a crucial training morning! :-). Highly recommended.

Purchased a Project One Emonda less than a year ago. Bike simply fell over in my garage onto my bike stand causing a small chip in the paint. What I thought was just a chip turned out to be a crack as well. A bike of this caliber should not have cracked under this circumstance. Unfortunately, I'm not getting adequate support from customer service and I need to purchase a new frameset. After 25 years and a few dozen trek bikes I will no longer be purchasing or representing the brand.

I felt it necessary to write a review to help clear up some of the 'issues' others have mentioned in their reviews. First, I ran these tires all last year, my current set (I swapped wheels so my original set is on a bike that is not my every day ride anymore...but those tires are still in good shape too) has over 1400 miles on them. The rear has had two serious punctures that required plugs (I use Stan's Dart plugs...work great), and is still going strong. Front has never gone flat from a puncture. I ride in Portland which is the city of broken glass, so I wasn't surprised at all when the punctures happened. Had I been running tubed tires I'd have flatted more, judging from other little holes that the sealant has fixed sans plugs. These tires are fast rolling, very ... MoreI felt it necessary to write a review to help clear up some of the 'issues' others have mentioned in their reviews. Can't have everything in life. Tire is either lightweight with a good compound that feels great but is more puncture prone, or it's a brick that feels terrible but hey no flats.Another person said the grip is good in dry but sucks in the wet, but they weigh 150lbs and run the tires at 70psi. No kidding. You think they are grippy in the dry now, then perhaps try running them at the correct pressure for your weight and be truly amazed. I weigh 187lbs and run the rear at 50psi and the front at 45. If I weighed 37lbs less, I'd run them much lower. 70psi is like a rock for 32c tires. What's the point of running tubeless if you can't enjoy the benefits gained from running lower pressures?? Come on.If you're going to run a nice tubeless tire, please know how to properly utilize it before you go writing reviews that make it clear you don't know what you are talking about. This tire is one of Bontrager's best tires ever produced, period.

A tyre for the modern road conditions
19 August 2018

I've been using Bontrager tyres for years. They are light, tough, virtually puncture-proof, and hold the road well despite having very little in the way of tread. On a "maiden ride" using these new tyres I hit a rock in the road at about 25 mph, resulting in the tube bursting, so great was the impact. However, close examination of the tyre revealed no damage whatsoever. A change of tube and I was on my way in 10 minutes. Great tyres, perfect for the modern road conditions.

Only ordered this again because none of the tyres I wanted were available. Replacing the same tyre which developed a small puncture which, no matter what I did would not seal. Maybe it was the Effeto Mariposa Caffélatex that was rubbish. Either way, extremely frustrating and, ultimately, expensive. I have no idea on how good the original tyre was. It seemed to have enough grip but seems to have little or no puncture protection despite getting good reviews.

Excellent all around road tire.

I have run the 32 in the past and it was an excellent, durable, fast, grippy, and comfortable tire. It’s fast and smooth on pavement, can take a few gravel sections, and will even get you through dry and smooth dirt (harder clay) if you drop the pressure a little but I wouldn’t say it’s a gravel tire… just a slightly more capable road tire. I just got some new set after wearing through the tread at over 3000 miles. The 32 is 120tpi, while the 28 has the “TR speed 170tpi casing.” I’m glad the smaller sizes are finally tubeless!

Great tyre

I’ve had 3-4 of the R3 hard case tubeless tyres. They are a good solid performing tubeless tyre. Quite tight to get on the rim, quite reasonable performance, I haven’t found anything better.

Mixed Feelings
23 March 2023

On my rear wheel I’m on my third one of these in eight months. The first one got slashed by unknown sharp thing while riding through a puddle, so not really the fault of the tyre. The second one got pinch punctures in the sidewall when hitting not a very big kerb going not very fast. So while the grip, comfort, ease of fitting tubeless etc is great they don’t appear to be very robust.

Not fit for purpose

Had these as OEM tyres on my Trek Domane. Original tyres blistered badly. Replaced them and the same as happened with the replacements. Have replaced them with Conti GP5000's and have had no issues. Subjectively they did feel slower than the Conti's. Only plus side was puncture resistance seemed good and delivery from Sigma was quick as usual

I fitted the Bontrager R3 tyres to my Trek Emonda as a replacement for the Bontrager R2 tyres. They feel more plyable and still offer excelent grip and low rolling resistance. I don't notice the lower weight but I feel less vibration from course road surfaces. After 650 miles in the last 6 weeks I think they're a great tyre for an average MAMIL like me.

Bontrager Tyre R3 Hard Case Lite 700x28c Black

The Bontrager R3 Hard-Case Lite is a racing tyre with low rolling resistance and excellent cornering grip. Are you a race rider? Then the Bontrager R3 Hard-Case Lite is definitely worth considering. The Bontrager R3 Hard-Case Lite is equipped with Aero Wings. Aero Wings reduce air resistance. Tubes and regular tyres have a small recess where the rubber touches the rim. Aero Wings fill the gap between the rim and the tyre. With this, it creates less air resistance than tubes and regular tyres. Aero Wings therefore provide better aerodynamics and make this tyre ideally suited for races. The fur bearer R3 is equipped with a 120 TPI carcass. This carcass is common for racing tyres. The carcass provides less weight, low rolling resistance and good riding qualities. At the same time, however, these tyres are more susceptible to damage. That's why the Bontrager R3 is equipped with Hard-Case Lite. This is a light, additional layer of protection against punctures. This makes the Bontrager R3 a worthy race tyre for the performance athlete.
