All-in-one solution for singing acoustic guitarists

This is a great all-in-one solution for singing acoustic guitarists. It's a lightweight package, fairly easy to use and set up. In some cases there are options that need to be accessed via sub menus (e.g. EQ settings) but the manual is pretty clear and straightforward. I use it in my church worship band with a line out to a stage monitor and XLR direct outs for separate guitar and vocal feeds to the PA. The 'enhance' function for both guitar and vocals is great, subtly brightening and compressing the sound to lift it and put it more forward in the mix. I haven't found much live use for the harmoniser yet, and the soft and hard voice correct function is a bit strange, I sing in tune so I probably wouldn't use it anyway, but it seems to me to add a strange doubled ... MoreThis is a great all-in-one solution for singing acoustic guitarists. The reverbs are great and the chorus effect is the typical great Boss chorus sound. I wouldn't use the looper function live, but it could be a useful addition for some, it works well - but you don't get an 'undo' function and, for me, the footswitch is less positive than the one on my Ditto looper, so punching in on the beat takes some practice. I would really recommend this unit, it's got great sound, it's quiet, it's got loads of I/O functionality and, typically Boss, is built like a tank.

Great all in one pedal! I have always been reluctant to use anything "All in one". I resisted this ever since it was rolled out. I have used passive speakers driven by powered heads, Mini passive mixers into powered speakers and Acoustic guitar amps. I tried them all. I am a professional singer/guitar player who has a solo acoustic act. I play A Martin M-36 and a Martin 000-18 both with K&K Pure mini passive Pickups, and I also play a Taylor 814ce. I had been using a Soundcraft UI-16 into a 10" QSC powered speaker for a few years and I bought this for a spare in case my Mixer ever went down. Just for kicks I decided to try it one night just to make sure it was back up and gig worthy. After dialing in the sound with the simple EQ settings I was up and running. The sound is right on par with any mixer or amp I have ever used. The vocal harmonies were jut as good as my trusty Digitech Vocal 2 I've used for 20 years. I pretty much found a use for every knob on this pedal. Great sounding reverb for both vocal and guitar, The guitar chorus sounds great and the looper works good also with the addition of a Boss FS-5U switch to as an off switch for loops. The only button I never use is the pitch correction. Fast forward a few months and I sold all my PA mixers and use only this pedal for a PA. My live rig is now Mic/Guitar into this pedal *into a 10 inch powered speaker. That's it! * The only caveat is: With The K&K Pure mini passive, there is an impedance mis-match with this pedal (as well as many other powered speakers and amps) if you plug a K&K guitar directly into the guitar input. This is NOT the fault of this pedal. It's fine with my Taylor, but the sound will "cut-out" with hard strumming or heavy bass notes with the K&K unless....I put a boss pedal BEFORE the input of this pedal. You can use a Tuner or pretty much any pedal and it will correct the impedance going into this pedal. I use A Boss EQ and have no issues.

Even more impressive than its name
29 February 2024

Although the name suggests this excellent box of tricks is aimed at the electro-acoustic guitar singer-player, with the single exception of the notch filter, it is an excellent tool if the singer plays any sort of guitar. The Vocal side includes three outstanding elements. First, a superior harmoniser creates six different voices that are accurately and reliably guided by a guitar played through the VE-8, and helped by the facility for the key of the song to be dialled in. Second, an intelligent and subtle voice adjustment keeps the tiredest vocal cords in tune. Thirdly, an array of settings adds four styles and levels of reverb to the singer's voice. The Guitar side is equally impressive. Thirdly, an array of settings adds four styles and levels of reverb to the singer's voice. The Guitar side is equally impressive. Unlike other well-known harmonisers, the guitar input of the VE-8 does more than merely guide the chord changes for the vocal enhancement. As well as enabling adjustment to the instrument's acoustic resonance, a choice of eight effects can be applied to the guitar output. These include Chorus, Tremelo, Phaser, two types of Delay, an Octave pitch shift up and/or down, a Ring Modulator and a 'Slow Gear' filter to make the guitar sound more like a violin. And all of these voice and guitar options can be saved in any of 50 memories. Finally, if the performer still isn't satisfied, there's a built-in Looper capable of unlimited overdubs on a live recording of up to 80 seconds duration.Like other BOSS pedals, the VE-8 Acoustic Performer can be set up and used almost straight out of the box. On the other hand, the depth and ingenuity of the features users will discover as they explore the full range of options and settings is testament to the inherent value of BOSS musical equipment.

Good Starter Kit

I've enjoyed using this pedal especially to add harmonies when I'm out and about doing weddings with my electric harp. The harp works nicely through the guitar input and it's great to add effects to the harp. There's a separate reverb, then you can choose from chorus, tremolo, etc. Works well as a tuner too, even for the harp.If you're doing simple single loops, it's fine. There's just one loop track, so if you want to add some rhythm through the sound board of your instrument, or with the mic, or if you want just one constant additional melody line then it works great. I enjoy doing Teardrop by Massive Attack as I can set that repeating melody line up, and a percussion loop using my hands on the harp soundboard, and then play and sing the rest of the song over the ... MoreI've enjoyed using this pedal especially to add harmonies when I'm out and about doing weddings with my electric harp. I enjoy doing Teardrop by Massive Attack as I can set that repeating melody line up, and a percussion loop using my hands on the harp soundboard, and then play and sing the rest of the song over the top. Thank you Massive Attack for having a constant line that doesn't need switching on and off!Because that's where this pedal falls short! Dive deeper, and you'll get frustrated, mainly because of the limitations of the looper. I didn't really appreciate until I started to get looping more and more, how limiting a one-track looper is. But this is compounded by the added problem of switching this single loop on and off.Imagine this. You've taken ages to build up your loop:Click once to record (Light goes red),click once to stop recording and leave the loop playing (light goes blue),click once to overdub the next layer of your loop (light goes purple),click once to stop recording and hear the new loop (light goes blue again).Want to stop the loop without deleting it? Click twice! TWICE! (if you get it right you'll get a blue flashing light - IF!)As it turns out it's super easy to think you've clicked twice, when actually it only registered one click (either by clicking too quickly or too slowly) and that triggers overdub. You then get the purple light of doom - adding an unwelcome layer to your loop. The only way to get rid of it is to delete the WHOLE loop and start again! To delete the WHOLE loop you hold your foot down for a few seconds until the loop stops! So you need to figure out when in the track is the best place to put your foot down in order for it to end when you want it to end! It's hard to avoid crash-landing endings to songs because of the hold it down till it stops (and hope for the best) method. The reality of course is that this must be a set amount of time, perhaps 2 or 3 seconds, if I measured it I'd probably figure it out. However, bear in mind that the user is playing in 3/4 or 4/4 or whatever time signature, coupled with whatever the relative tempo of the song is, so at least for me, it's impossible to switch brain and start counting in seconds! It must be said, however, that my usage means that I have a repertoire of songs edging towards 500 for weddings. If I was practising a specific set of 30-40 mins then it might be possible to get these clicks worked up in the same way as the vocal line or the harp/guitar part, until I know it well well enough to click at the right time. That just does not fit with my working life, however. The problem is, looping is like chocolate. You can't just have one bit, you have to eat the whole bar! You get the bug and pretty rapidly this bit of kit is not going to cut it. I'm exploring replacing this with two/three units. An effects pedal for the harp, a looper, and a dedicated vocal effects pedal for harmonies and for the octave effect (which I can't believe this little box does NOT have!)TLDR.Good for beginners but you'll rapidly get frustrated with it.No octave effects on the vocalsGood all rounder, but with serious limitations if you want to take things a bit further. The idea of a one-box rig is compelling, but I'm not sure this is it.

Great Vocal and Acoustic Guitar Processor for Many Applications
30 July 2021

This is a great vocal and acoustic guitar processor that can be used for live playing connected to a PA system, for recording using the USB computer interface, and for practice sessions for yourself or with a band. The vocal processing includes multiple reverb, delay, multiple harmonies, and pitch correction enhancement. They all sound great and the effects can be mixed with the lead vocal as needed. The acoustic guitar sound processing can be adjusted to get a realistic acoustic guitar sound. There are guitar effects for reverb, delay, chorus, octaves, and more that also sound great. After searching the manual for quite a while, I was able to find that input sensitivity could be turned up using Advanced settings in the Appendix. The manual should explain this feature as one of the first possible adjustments because I may have sent the pedal back if I had not found this. It is physically well made like all Boss pedals. It provides a lot of value and quality for the price.

Nooooooo
19 August 2023

Overall:Not a reflection on sounds. There is so much that is not user friendly with this pedal. The looping….It’s a double tap to stop. What? You’re playing live and need a quick cut for a vocal break or whatever and you’ve gotta double tap? Then to undo a bad layer you just.. oh wait. You can’t. You have to delete it all. The harmonizer. Having it in the middle of the pedal leads to MANY misclicks. And just is not user friendly. You can’t do a double voice and a higher voice option. It’s just so far behind the decades old Digitech in that aspect that it’s laughable. Stay away.

Returned it
1 December 2022

I was initially excited, however that quickly went away. 1) The mic input distorts if you have a powerful voice. Currently, I run a Shure 87A into a Digitech Vocalist Live 3. I have absolutely ZERO issues, but I was looking for something newer and I liked that the Boss had separate effects for the vox and guitar. Nevertheless, I can't have my vocal distorting. 2) The vocal enhance. I do like SOME pitch correct. I found with this that if you want more "enhancement", mean EQ, compression, etc that is in the enhancement effect, you have to have more pitch correction. That is not acceptable, either. It needs more flexibility in adjustment. The guitar sound was good, but not good enough to destroy my vocals. I returned it.

Simple and clean, but could use a little more flexibility

This unit seems like a great unit from a reputable company, and it is. I think it could use a bit more flexibility with a screen instead of knobs, but it pretty much does the job it says it will. Sturdy and road-worthy. Prefer the TC-Helicon Acoustic Play, but that's now outdated...

Unbelievably Valuable

The VE-8 has been a game changer for me. It gives me the ability to add texture changes from a verse to a chorus, using the layers of the effects, the harmonies, and EQ changes. That makes my live solo performances much more interesting to perform and hear. The "under the hood" options on this thing are incredible, like the ability to globally EQ the guitar, the voice, and adjust things like input gain on the guitar, tremolo speed, delay times, etc. This thing is really well-thought out in what it offers the artist, and it's also easy and intuitive to operate at the surface level. The harmony section offers some very useful features, such as you can simply cue harmonies off the guitar chords, or designate the key, or a hybrid of the two. The harmony section offers some very useful features, such as you can simply cue harmonies off the guitar chords, or designate the key, or a hybrid of the two. I have found that for some of my songs I like one method, but on others I prefer an alternate because of how the VE-8 creates harmonies for that specific song. The VE-8 provides lots of features, lots of flexibility, and seems extremely well thought through.I have also found the programming to be really efficient and easy to engage. Sometimes that's not true of stuff like this, and although I have years of audio engineering and studio experience, I hate being in the position of pushing buttons to get through menus, setting parameters, repeat, repeat, and all that. The VE-8 is so nicely knob-based that you really just need to check the manual to find the "entry key" commands, get into the parameters, change them easily, and voila, you're right back to playing. The VE-8 was a superb investment in my capacity to share my songs, music, and creativity with audiences. I highly recommend it.
