Breville - Smart Fryer

(91 reviews)

The Smart Fryer from Breville is flexible enough to adjust time and temperature depending upon what you need to cook. French fries require a higher temperature and longer time, while a delicate food like calamari requires a low temperature and a shorter cooking time. The Smart Fryer's technology has 7 preset functions that adjust the temperature and the time. One of the functions is the twice-fried option for restaurant style French fries with a 2 stage frying process. It also makes adjustments for fresh or frozen ingredients and there is even a custom setting that allows you to program exactly the options that you want for your favorite dish. The Smart Fryer is made of brushed stainless steel and has two handles on each side of the fryer for easy lifting. There is a minimum and maximum line for filling the oil and the heating element and thermostat can be lifted from the base for ease in cleaning.

My kitchen is filled with only Breville appliances, so when it came time to getting a fryer, I knew where to look. I purchased this and was worried by the reviews stating that the heating element couldn't be removed for cleaning. When we unboxed the fryer, we saw that that was not an issue at all. Breville must have fixed this in the newer models, as the element is easily unhooked to make cleaning the oil tub easy.My parents have owned mainly tefal fryers over the years which have been great, and if you're looking for oil filtration functions I'd look at those. However if you're like me and just want a fryer that heats up the oil and perfectly fries your food, you can't go wrong with this one. The whole appliance isn't as solid as other Breville appliances or other fryers, but it's holding up alright.

Surprisingly light and easy to clean.Just abit bulky in regard to storage. The operating instructions are essential and the digital screen connected to the heating component is very user friendly. It would have been great to have more information in the operating instruction regarding the pros and cons of the different oils.Weighing up the healthiest, storage and as well as the best fry was the most time consuming aspect of using this kitchen appliance.

Not perfect but we're very happy with this fryer
8 June 2020

We use this often enough for fresh-cut shoestring fries that we mostly leave it out on the counter, so it was important to us that it not be a total eyesore and also we were keen for it to match our other Breville small appliances, so this was a pretty easy choice once I saw that it was very reasonably priced.Looks: It actually looks even better in person, so we are thrilled with that. We're able to leave it on the counter and it blends right in.Performance: We've only used it for fries, and I generally end up overriding the "smart" settings, but the end result is freakin' delicious homemade fries which was 100% the goal.Size: This one is a trade-off. The folding basket handle and small size make this ideal if you're planning on storing the fryer between uses or if you're mostly cooking for a couple or a small family. Since we leave it out and we're feeding a family of 6, I do wish the capacity was larger.Cons: After about a dozen uses I've noticed the lid is a bit wonky and doesn't sit completely flat anymore. Also as the fryer isn't as deep as more the industrial style fryers we've used in the past, I learned the hard way that you have to monitor carefully to ensure that it's safe to close the lid once fries have been added... do it too soon and it will boil over and create a hot oil volcano that bubbles over all sides (that was about as fun to clean up as it sounds!)Overall, despite these flaws, we are very happy with it and would purchase again, though I would suggest to Breville if they tweak the design, they need to make it deeper (more "dead" space above the top of the basket) with a sturdier lid. And preferably offer a greater capacity version.

I got this small fryer in December of 2023, I only used it twice. When i tried to fry in it today the temperature only got as high as 195. When I reached out to customer service, they said the part I needed they no longer sold, so now it's useless, and I ended up buying a different deep fryer from another company. DO Not buy this!! It is a waste of money. I will NEVER buy anything from Breville again! Very Disappointed

Say goodbye to greasy mess!
1 January 2022

I got the deep fryer for Christmas. Its my first time using a deep fryer. Used it once to fry calamari. It worked like a charm.I used the program setting for calamari and it came out delicious, better than restaurant.Clean up was not too hard. Basket and inner bowl went in dishwasher, the rest hand washed easily. The best part was there was no grease splatter anywhere around the fryer. That was the main reason I bought a deep fryer, not to have a greasy mess around my stove and counters to clean up. I should have bought one years ago!The construction is light weight but sturdy. I think if handled with care it will last a long time.I would recommend this product.

A great product although the basket is a tad wonky lifting it out. Chips came out perfectly. Made the mistake of putting larger pieces of fish in and they stuck to the basket. Cut the size down and worked perfectly. It does take a lot of oil. Buy two large bottles

Solid Performance/Value - Could Be Better

I am a Breville fan and have been for some years. The build quality, is great and normally so is the innovation. The Smart Fryer is well made and performs very well. Oil heats up quickly and stays at temperature as you'd expect. Controls are easy and well thought out. Safety features include magnetic plug which some have criticized but I personally think is a plus. Deep fat fryers are inherently dangerous and this safety feature is a good idea though I would appreciate about 6" more cord. Big side, 'keep cool', side handles are also a very welcome feature. I also love the big top handle and well fitting lid with viewing window. The basket is a good size but might be a bit bigger if you're frying for a family and want to avoid multiple batches to get your meal out ... MoreI am a Breville fan and have been for some years. The basket is a good size but might be a bit bigger if you're frying for a family and want to avoid multiple batches to get your meal out without some of it getting cold. That's where the innovation story ends I'm afraid and that's a shame because apart from the control panel there's not a lot going on here that's unique in comparison to the competition. It's a shame because these things have really not changed in form factor for decades. Here's a punch list of what I'd suggest...-finish/fold over all edges of the steel; internal outer shell edges are sharp-use thicker steel for the exterior shell-the heating element should/must be detachable from the control console and it should also dishwasher safe; total no-brainer as getting underneath it to clean next to the control panel is a pain-research and use a better material for the exterior of the control panel enclosure; the dull grey/black/brown plastic is difficult to get oil off of especially with the gangly/delicate heating element permanently attached-increase the capacity-make the tank deeper so that splash and aerosolized oil is absolutely minimized-consider reusable filters for the lid-perhaps an optional lid that allows for the raising and lowering of the basket in a fully enclosed manner to reduce oil mess in the kitchen-mold one of the tank corners for more direct-stream pouring

Temperature & plug

Works great. Keeps temperature after adding food. Allows higher fry temperature than some other fryers. Relatively easy to clean. Only issue is you need to wedge something in to insure magnetic plug stays in place.

Best Deep Fryer I have owned. I had to replace the last one . This was a step above the last one in price and attributes. It has a great digtal display , I know what temperature the oil is at all times. Heats up super quick. Has great pre-set temperaturs and chip cooking facility. I love it !!
