I purchased the Caldigit TS4 on June 14, 2023. The included power supply unit has a siren like noise emanating from it. Buyer Beware... This is a known issue which has not been resolved. Caldigit spoke about the issue on their own twitter account back in May 2022 and said that a fix was coming. It's not fixed.I've reached out to Caldigit customer support several times. Their phone support is none existent, and no one has replied to my emails. I've tried plugging the unit into other outlets, and an APC 1500 power back up unit, all with the same results, not to mention that my power supply is apparently the revised (fixed) version with Rev. Additionally the siren noise becomes more pronounced when the unit is plugged into a thunder bolt 4 port on my 16 M1Pro MacBook Pro.If you have a quiet workspace the sound will be extremely annoying. I'll be sending the TS4 back if I don't have any response from Caldigit.

Take that for what you will but it seems to have nothing to do with Caldigit (and no the DisplayLink Manager didn't fix anything either for the Mac mini despite the aforementioned stardock usb-c only dock being able to do 2 with the software running, I think it's a thunderbolt 4/M1 thing though). The construction is rock solid, the metal feels nice and it's actually pretty small for as many ports are packed into this thing. I've been trying to get it since March and it was well worth the wait

If you're looking for a one-plug solution for your new M1 Macbook Pro, then look no further than the TS4. This thing is truly a wonder. As somebody who uses their laptop as a desktop station when at home, it used to be so tedious to eject all the external hard drives, crawl under the desk and retrieve the power-cable, gather all the dongles I still needed -- to the point I was doing everything in my power NOT to ever work on the go.But the TS4 solved all that. Now everything for my desktop work lives in the back of this hub, with a SINGLE Thunderbolt 4 cable that I plug into the laptop when it's time to dock up. I bought the CalDigit TS4 thinking that they were the industry leader and that my dock needs would be met. Unfortunately, the dock isn't all it's cracked up to be-and is particularly not great when used with an M1 Mac.My two biggest concerns are with useless ports and an inability to work with the Cam Link 4K. There's another issue you'll see in many reviews about the M1 only connecting to one external monitor. Unfortunately, the TS4 won't help with that, but that's the fault of Apple, not CalDigit.First, there are several USB-C ports that are insufficient to charge my phone. Perhaps this is an issue of insufficient power, but at $400+ USD I expected this dock to handle it.Second and most importantly, when I plug in my dSLR via the Cam Link 4K, my video source ... Perhaps this is an issue of insufficient power, but at $400+ USD I expected this dock to handle it.Second and most importantly, when I plug in my dSLR via the Cam Link 4K, my video source freezes after a few seconds. This is a crucial part of my setup and never freezes when connected directly to the MacBook Pro. I've seen reports online that it's an issue with the Cam Link, the TS4, and an M1 Mac, so I don't know who's responsible, but the fact that plugging into my computer resolves the problem puts it on CalDigit, in my mind. Ultimately, I'm now back to using an adapter I wanted the TS4 to eliminate, with both ports on my laptop now used up.On the plus side, it lets me use Ethernet to connect my laptop and makes it easier to connect to / disconnect from my home setup, though that is quite rare in my case.
I purchased this after using someone else's CalDigit Thunderbolt hub (can't remember the model). I have had numerous challenges. The VideoPort monitor doesn't wake up after the MacBook Pro goes to sleep. I have to unplug the cable and replug it to get it to recognize the monitor. The USB webcam was just as buggy. Sometimes, it would also not recognize after going to sleep. Dealt with CalDigit customer support who had me try various things like upgrading the monitor cable, resetting SMC and NVRAM. Nothing worked. Finally, I changed the Power Adapter settings so my MacBook doesn't go to sleep while plugged in and that works - even if it doesn't address the root cause.
Okay, so it's been 1 day, so take this with a grain of salt.I've been looking for a multi-thunderbolt dock for awhile that can handle the speeds and efficiency that I need working with video and photos. Speed is money and reliability is a close second. Most are cheap. Most don't work great. Most speeds are terrible.I can always use more ports, but this little guy utilizes them wonderfully. I love it. I have all of the ports connected to SSD external drives, and they are just as fast as connected to the computer. And having an ethernet was a pleasant surprise that I was interested about. I have two NAS's with over 25 tbs of drives in my living room that information travels at the speed of WIFI, so I've been wanting to link them with a hardwire for awhile with ... I have two NAS's with over 25 tbs of drives in my living room that information travels at the speed of WIFI, so I've been wanting to link them with a hardwire for awhile with nothing really meeting my needs. I drilled holes across two rooms and fed a 30' ethernet cable to connect the CalDigit in my back office to my router. Speedy. My NAS transfer speeds went from 200 gig file taking two hours to 23 minutes or so. I hate spending $400 on a dock, but I love the speed and convenience. Totally worth it.Now if you are just dealing with documents, probably not worth it. But my business is video and photos, so I deal with big beefy files, this thing is a necessity and if working like it does on day 1 for a long time, this thing will be my best friend in my office.
I'm an audio engineer, so it's not uncommon for me to be utilizing every single available port on any given machine that I have, in addition to needing some hubs. Sometimes, you do get what you pay for... and this is true with the CalDigit TS4. It's the most expensive, most premium Thunderbolt dock on the market. It's made entirely of metal, except for the rubber stands. It's completely silent (no coil whine, like certain other docks have) and has 18 ports (more than any other dock). All of the USB ports are Super Speed (10Gbps). The Ethernet port is 2.5 Gigabit. Both card readers are UHS II. Literally everything is the best it can possibly be. That's why it's $400.One thing to note if you plan on gaming, the DisplayPort 1.4 will support UHD 4K @ up to 144hz. The DisplayPort on many gaming monitors will support a refresh rate above this, so be aware. Aside from that, any resolution below UHD 4K will be supported @ up to ... I use the TS4 to connect my MacBook Pro M1 Max 64 GB RAM and 4TB storage to my desktop. This is not a technical performance review; this is how I use the TS4 for my specific applications and workflow. I need to transfer large files and use high-demand memory applications. I need this for video and photo editing and probably have products that many others would connect. I do not want to spend time connecting all my accesories when transitioning from desktop to road warrior. The CalDiigit TS4 lets me do it all plug and play. You are spending more on this unit but getting what you pay for. I continue to carry a mobile docking station for connecting accessories when on the road. Still, the only difference between using my MacBook Pro as a desktop or mobile is the ability to use all my accessories, and the CalDigit TS4 is the ticket. When returning to my desktop, I connect my computer to one Thunderbolt cord on the TS4 to get everything quickly connected, including; powering and charging my Mac (I keep the Mac power cord in my bag for traveling), 4K monitor, RODE podcaster, Black Magic video mixer, 2 X SSD Firewire Hard Drives, Bose USB powered speakers, HP large format printer connected by USB print cable, LAN connection for best network speeds vs. WiFi, Elgato Stream Deck XL, Ipad, and iPhone docking stations. I had no trouble connecting all of my devices with nothing weird going on. Everything worked, if not better, than if I directly plugged into my Macbook Pro. The TS4 is like an air traffic control tower for all my computer accessories. I should also note that the speeds of my SSD hard drives did not slow down when connecting through the TS4. I get great transfer rates and could not be more pleased with my purchase.
I've only had the TS4 a week, but it's so much better than the three less expensive docks I've tried. The Mini only has two HDMI and two usb-c so running a second monitor was somewhat hit or miss. With the TS4, I can use two extended monitors. One runs from the Mini HDMI and the second from a TS4 usb-c. This allows me to run a RAID from another usb-c and still have additional usb-c for external drives. There seems to be some quirky things happening very occasionally if I reboot. A few times I had to go to the monitor settings and reconfigure. If this persists, my rating would drop for other M1 mac users. Also, I tried unsuccessfully to connect my GH6 to copy files from the CFexpress card. but this same test worked if I plugged directly to my mini and M1 MacBook ... The SD card worked fine. . I haven't asked CalDigit yet.As solid as it is, I'm a bit concerned with the jiggle on the usb-c connections. Having said that, I didn't lose connection when jiggling the cable. Because of this, I checked the usb-c connectors on my MacBook Pro and they also seem loose, so maybe this is normal.
