I was pleasantly surprised at the warm ultra clean sound from both analog and digital sources. I am using CA Solo MM phono stage so I can't comment on the internal phono stage but I would expect similar, which is great! As one who usually buys flagship-1 models, I took the chance on this one based on CA's reputation for warm accurate sound and imaging, and all the top reviews for this genuine bargain receiver. The AXR100 hasn't let me down. I also favor the digital display, as simple as it is, for dB sound level volume, and the ability to tweak the tone controls for my room. So all in all, it had everything, more than the integrated amps I was considering for double the dollars, and makes me a happy camper. My "analog+" system consists of a modified Thorens MK166MKII turntable, Ortofon Super OMP Stylus 30, Cambridge Audio Solo MM external phono stage, Michael Green Rev6i speakers and a Yamaha CDX-1100U CD deck. I use the internal DAC from the AXR and the sound is superb! 3.5MM AUX is tied to a tube based headphone/pre-amp. "lovely sound" Thank you Cambridge Audio.

I had almost decided to give up on a pair of B&W DM580 speakers that did not sing under the power of my Yamaha RX-V483 receiver. Lucky a friend who has already taken the HiFi plunge recommended a higher end amplifier and matched the Cambridge Audio AXR100 with my needs and budget. I was even more delighted to find this refurbished unit being sold directly by the manufacturer. This amplifier produces amazing results with the speakers and you cannot beat the $400 price tag. Thank you Cambridge Audio for making such a high end option available to those with a modest budget!

First time buyer
21 November 2022

I really do not know what to assume with receivers just yet. Being a 1st time buyer makes this tough. My experience with it was...awesome directions to get things up and running. I had no clue the plugs in the back for speakers had to have the middle plastic cap removed to insert the banana plugs, so that I saw in a you tube and was like...AH HA!. Otherwise, it hums a bit and makes noise when used. It isn't extremely special or over the top amazing, but it does a good job and I am glad to have this for now. I think I will upgrade in the future. Its not like I didn't do research, so I was aware this gives a nice warm sound, and I think it is as advertised.

Great amp for the price.

Very pleased with the axr100 might not get the press like some amps but its certainly one of the best for the money. Great clarity and detail with controlled base. Nice softness to it but still has plenty of punch if you need it. It gives a great sense of space to the music. I bought this amp only after a demo. was going to purchase a denon pma-600ne after much research and had not given much thought to this amp but this amp out performed it on many levels. Thanks to the staff at the oxford store I didn't need to book a demo. The guy set the amps up I was interested in and similar speakers to what I have at home very efficiently he was excellent in the demo and did a great job.Amp sounds great at home and it's settled in now after 36+ hours of play. Great amp with great service!
8 September 2022

I recently bought some hard to drive speakers and went through three amplifiers in quick succession feeling very disappointed with the results. I eventually called the guys at the Southampton store and they listened, heard and then guided me through some options. We went in and they patiently waited why we listed to it and we immediately pulled the trigger. It was expensive but super worth it! The one thing I would note is that it has a cooling fan which isn’t something I’m used to. It isn’t silent and raises the noise floor a bit. We didn’t realise that until having it at home but there’s a simple solution, listen loud!

Great value overall. Crystal clear highs, dynamic lows, muted midrange.
16 March 2021

I was disappointed with the sound out of the box, it was dull and muted, but after playing it for a half hour or so, it started to warm up and sound more dynamic. Ive always read that some electronics need time to burn in and Ive experienced that now with two pieces of equipment, both from Cambridge. After a break in period its continued to sound better and better. Im replacing a 45 watt Rotel integrated amplifier with this receiver. The Rotel has more natural sounding and dynamic midrange with vocals that are more realistic and clear, but 100 watts per channel from the Cambridge definitely has its advantages. When you play this receiver moderately loud, the sound really opens up. When you play this receiver moderately loud, the sound really opens up. The high notes are crystal clear and the speakers react quickly to the lower frequency music. The muted vocals at lower power levels improve significantly when you turn up the juice. All things considered, Im pleased with the purchase. My only disappointment is the midrange vocals sound like youre listening through a veil, especially at lower volumes. Interestingly, the vocals are a bit less muted on vinyl than CDs (I have it mated with a Music Hall turntable and a Cambridge CD player, which also has an understated midrange, and they may not be the best match for each other in that respect.)Cosmetically, there is a small, barely noticeable scratch on the volume knob. Otherwise, I would have had no clue the item was a refurbished unit. Of note, the rear speaker posts are pretty cheap on my unit. Ive seen at least 3 different type posts in various pictures on the internet. Unfortunately, I got the one kind that doesnt allow the use of banana plugs. Overall, Im pleased with the purchase, it was a screaming bargain for $350 refurbished.

I'm very pleased! I needed to replace a twelve year old Onkyo 8050 receiver that lost the right channel. I did a ton of research and comparison. I'm retired and on a fixed income so my budget is tight. I really couldn't afford the ARX 100 new and was going to buy a Yamaha AS 301. Thankfully I discovered the Cambridge Audio site on Ebay. A refurbished unit fit my budget and after reading the positive reviews I decided to pull the trigger on this model. Boy was I glad that I did! When the receiver arrived I inspected it and found it to be indistinguishable from new. I hooked it up to my Mirage floorstanders and ran a coax digital interconnect from my CD player to the DAC. Incredible tone and soundstage. I'm impressed with the amplifier. Fantastic rhythm and pace. Much smoother than the typical Japanese tuning. I'm delighted with the sound. The bonus is that I effectively get a new CD player because the built-in DAC is quite good. All in all I'm one happy camper! Thanks Cambridge Audio for having a great product at an affordable price.

Smooth sound, intuitive controls

Very nice modern receiver, with intuitive controls; FM station programming, tone/bal adjustments, BT pairing; everything was easy to master. The sound quality seems quite good, glad to see it is still class AB, not a switching amp.Overall: positive impression. It's not perfect though; there is no true tape loop function, only a "record out", so there is no way to monitor the recording off the tape. The tape output needs to use one of the regular inputs; A1/A2/A3; on the receiver, so if you select that input you immediately lose the source you are recording! Major shortcoming for those old school tape recorder users. Also, the inputs are not hard switched, i.e. they seem to be analog switches (IC-based), so that if you accidentally or inadvertently drive an unselected input too hard, with too much voltage, it breaks through with this gut wrenching sound. I found this out when I turned up my tape recorder's output, which was plugged into the AXR but not selected (as mentioned earlier), which was shared with the headphone jack on the recorder, so I could monitor the recording off the tape, and it must have overloaded the AXR switching circuitry and suddenly broke through to the speakers with a God-awful sound. This doesn't happen with old technology hard wire switching found on vintage gear.Just a couple of minor negative issues, not a deal breaker, by any means. Finally, wish it were not made in PR(C)C. Seems that all the better British audio manufacturers use mainland Chinese plants, vs. Taiwan or other. Minus points.

great sound
13 July 2023

Being severely hearing impaired I decided to go to my nearest store and have a listen to a couple of different ampliers, cd players and speaker combinations. The staff were very helpful and I loved that they WERE NOT at all pushy to upselling to a more expensive system, I could genuinely tell the sound quality between the two amplifiers for my hearing impairment I decided on the Cambridge system for my personal preference. If I had normal hearing I would have most likely have chosen the slightly less expensive amplifier but the DAC made the choice easier for me as the sound quality was much clearer at a lower volume .Thank you to the staff at the Nottingham branch for thier professionalism
