Capable gravel bike with good versatility

The BSA BB and ability to swap wheelsets relatively easily (unlike previous assymetric Topstone generation) were important factors. My bike came with 38mm Terreno Dry tyres which work well for many of my rides that are a combination of road and off road including gnarlier segments. I was not impressed by the FSA AGX chainset and this has been changed out for a Shimano GRX 810 chainset. I have since read that many other Topstone owners have found the FSA chainset to be a weak component. Overall, it is a competitively priced gravel bike that will benefit from a few upgrades over time. Those looking for an essentially off road gravel bike may prefer the 1x and possibly Lefty models in the range.Service from Sigma from initial inquiry through to after sales has been excellent.

A solid bike for road touring. It has all the braze ons for low rider front panniers, rear rack, etc. It had enough room to have a Kryptonite cable lock on the seat tube without a 3rd water bottle cage. If I do a rail trail, I'd put back the original tires. Road tires in 30mm width are more appropriate for road touring. There's road and sugar sand around here, nothing between. Hammonton, N.J. 6 foot, this is a large frame, rideable due to the sloping top tube. A bit short in the legs 31" inseam at 6 foot, but long in the trunk and arms. I was impressed by how softly and smoothly this one rides, and I've got the more durable aluminum version. This one is great for riding in a straight line which is what you need for a touring bike. I was impressed by how softly and smoothly this one rides, and I've got the more durable aluminum version. This one is great for riding in a straight line which is what you need for a touring bike. The chainstays are long which provides good heel clearance for rear panniers, and like nobody seems to realize, straighter chainlines if crosschaining. No interferance problems with toes and front wheel due to that long front center on the large size! Cannondale is famous for proprietary components and quirky designs. They definitely stuck to widely available solid components on this one. No need to stockpile components since parts will be available 5 to 10 years from now. The gearing selection is well chosen in general, but with the 11-34 cassette and a heavy touring load, I'd be coasting before using that huge gear. I ordered a 12-36 which offers a lower ratio and a lower 2nd largest cog. The 36 is pushing it a bit on capacity, but this is known to work. This isn't a crit racer afterall! Assembly was near perfect. I checked all the bolt torques, took out the bottom bracket to check if the threads were greased as I've seen unprepped ones with out of square bottom bracket shells from the factory. ( Another brand) The preload on the front hub was a bit excessive. An easy fix, but most low end hubs have similar issues. The wheels are true and round, with even spoke tension. Still is true after 150 miles. Perhaps I'll build a 32 spoke rear wheel for it this winter. Until then I'll be carrying the Stein cassette tool , a correct spoke taped to the front rack, and a spoke key. In reality, with one broken spoke and that wheel/ frame clearance, it'd ride ok like that awhile. At least they chose to build the wheels cross 3 spoke pattern. Durability with what stresses disk brakes put on spokes, is a big priority. Cross 2 with radial spokes on the other side ,24 spokes would be a really dumb choice here. Again, this is no crit racer! If this one breaks down on tour, a good shop will have all you need. I'm very pleased to have been able to test ride 2 frame sizes before buying. Some shops have limited stock.

My only two complaints would be the saddle and brakes. The saddle being very tough on the bum but that was quickly remedied with cycling liners or shorts. The brakes came out the shop squeaking but I’ll check back in at my local REI or Bike Shop and see how that can be fixed, stopping power isn’t an issue though which is more important.I’m very inexperienced with cycling but I have no complaints at all about this bike after 105 miles. Currently I run a top tube bag from REI, a single bottle cage, and a front/rear Bontrager ION100R combo light set for visibility on all my daily rides. Super excited to add hundreds of more miles along with potential upgrades that are available for this platform.P.S.: For pedals since they aren’t included, I bought a set of Bontrager hybrid flat/SPD pedals from a local bike shop to hold me over while I consider stepping into the ā€œclip lessā€ cycling shoe game.

Fantastic bike but FSA components are terrible
5 September 2023

The good: The bike itself is great, rides smooth and is confidence inspiring on dirt/gravel. Now for the bad: I want to preface that I know buying the cheapest carbon option won’t have top spec components but, the FSA crankset and bottom bracket that Cannondale slapped on this bike are complete garbage. It worked great for almost 100 miles, then the crank broke apart and fell off my bike mid-ride. I had read online about people having issues with this crank and the bottom bracket but I thought, at the price point of this bike, it can’t be all that bad. Boy was I wrong. Replacing the crank with Shimano GRX as Cannondale should have put on the bike from the start. From my understanding I could get a warranty repair but it’s not worth it to be out a bike for a month ...Ā MoreThe good: The bike itself is great, rides smooth and is confidence inspiring on dirt/gravel. I saw this bike online and went to see it in the store. The sales person said I have your size in a medium that was returned and is almost new and it’s at a discount. Turns out the discount was applicable to this model whether new or not. I put aside my misgivings and paid the new bike price for a used bike. I’m sure it’s a great bike but it wasn’t nearly new judging by how it performed. Loud front brakes are a common problem on this model. Also the shifting wasn’t ā€œnew bikeā€ smooth. I took it back and the manager was offended I was returning the used bike I paid the new bike price for. On muddy wet trails I would not feel confident, this might be a rider issue, but this won’t allow a novice to hit the trails overnight.Having riden 100milers on the bike, I can confirm the geometry is perfect, it’s very comfortable and easy handling. When riding solo on the drops, the position is a little wide and stretched out, so it is a tiring after a while. Average pace on the bike will be rider dependent. But if you can hold 18-20mph solo on a road bike you should see 16-17mph on this, so it is a good road option even with the fat tyres on.If you want this for road only (i.e. winter bike) I would recommend swapping the tyres, as they are a drag.Bike has good components, only cheap part they’ve skimped on is the bottom bracket, FSA parts rust after 1 season, so be aware that this will need changing quickly.

Much love for my Topstone 3!

Opted for the Topstone 3 (S) given the decent price and my nostalgic affinity for Cannondales that dates back to the mid 1990. Given my weight (currently 230) I'm really pleased with how its handled. Same time, I'm currently putting together a second wheelset with proper road tires because my Topstone has become my primary bike for exercise and group road rides, and because I don't want to buy a third bike. Not to mention, I simply want to try out some decent carbon rims to go with the carbon fork.Feeling so-so about the Fizik Aliante Delta saddle, especially when the miles hit north of 15 on a ride. Haven't had any chaffing but my discomfort starts to increase a bit more than I'm accustomed to. I will probably try out a few different saddles in the near future but I'll give it some more time/miles first. The Shimano Sora gearing/FSA Tempo Adventure cranks have been smooth and problem free, and didn't get messed up even when I changed gears on an uphill under pressure. The Promax mechanical brakes are decent enough. They haven't failed and I haven't felt nervous about them at any point However their stopping power is noticeably inferior compared to the Shimano hydraulic brakes on my mtb. Then again, I don't plan on using my Topstone for chunkier, steeper downhill trails near me, at least not regularly, where such a difference would be magnified.Overall, it's a pretty bike to my eyes. I've long opted for more muted colors on my bikes. However the grey paint job seems much darker than depicted in the above picture. I was liking hard on that lighter gray and feel a little disappointed by the difference between what my eyes see in the picture and what I see now. It is what it is. Already over it. Bottom line is that for me, the Topstone is a capable bike on and off road. I'm stoked about it and any upgrades I might make beyond perhaps the saddle, are more about improvements specific to my needs, not about any true deficiencies or limitations of the bike.

So close to great, but brake alignment ruins it
28 July 2023

The Cannondale Topstone 4 looks terrific, is pretty light for the price, and very comfortable to ride for a few hours straight. I purchased it to see if it would motivate me to get back into cycling for exercise and exploring- and it has! I really like that it only has a single (rear) derailleur that shifts crisply, as this both simplifies the ride and the maintenance. I was a bit worried about the gear range, but for my level of fitness it is perfect: I haven't met a steep enough hill climb to require the smallest gear, and the largest gear is perfect for a reasonable cadence on flat ground at 20mph or downhill at 30mph.So why one star? I drove two hours to pick it up at REI, and in the pre-release checkout the tech spent an hour trying to align the rear disc ...Ā MoreThe Cannondale Topstone 4 looks terrific, is pretty light for the price, and very comfortable to ride for a few hours straight. I drove two hours to pick it up at REI, and in the pre-release checkout the tech spent an hour trying to align the rear disc brake so that it would not rub the disc. He ultimately gave up and said the brake mount was not properly ground at the factory, and promised to have a more experience tech fix it. So I drove two hours home empty handed. They called the next day to say it was all set, so I drove back two hours to pick it up. Honestly, this is 5+ stars for service, but... I just finished a 50 mile test ride (almost entirely on a paved rail trail, not gravel), and everything was great* EXCEPT there was an increasingly horrible grinding sound when I used the rear brake. I checked it out at home, and the caliper is once again clearly misaligned to the point it bends the disc when closed. So now back to REI for a third maintenance attempt to fix it. If it can't be reliably fixed, I'm likely to return it. Although I'd consider another Topstone model that is aligned and perhaps with better brakes.* Other than the rear brake, the only thing worth mentioning is there is a fairly loud 'clunk' when it drops down a gear. At first I found this disconcerting, but I am starting to like it because it shifts cleanly and the clunk is positive feedback of the gear change.

Solid, fast, comfortable and versatile.

The Cannondale Topstone 1 2023 is a solid, fast, amazingly comfortable and versatile bike. On the road I am able to keep pace with road bikes. The bike abdords road bumps and remains stable in rough roads riddled with potholes. It has some subtle compliance which makes it feel amazing on tarmac. It climbs reasonably well. On the flat, it accelerates faster than expected and holds on to its speed satisfactorily. It takes quite a bit of fiddling with the saddle angle and seatpost height to get a perfect fit. Once dialled in, this brown beast is exquisitely comfortable. It feels a bit heavier as you clock in the miles but with good sports nutrition and hydration, you can keep going for hours without feeling any pain in the backside. Once dialled in, this brown beast is exquisitely comfortable. It feels a bit heavier as you clock in the miles but with good sports nutrition and hydration, you can keep going for hours without feeling any pain in the backside. For a racier feel, it helps to install a longer stem and slam it right down to the headtube. The brakes take a few miles to run in and once done, they bite without pulling hard on the levers. The gear changes are smoth. It takes a bit of effort to master a 2 by drive train when coming from a Shimano slx 1 X 12 system on my XC MTB. Once harmony between man and machine is synchronised, the 2by drive train is predictable and reliable. This bike made me stay out for more than 2 hours when my original intention was to test ride it for just 1 hour. I am finding excuses to go out for a ride more often than usual. This bike is excellent as a fast commuter's companion. On gravel roads with loose rock debris, it's stable enough to stay upright. However, wider tyres would make it more capable on gravel roads with jutting roots and larger chunks of rocks. I will run this bike with a lightweight road wheelset and tubeless 32mm road tyres. For off road useI will run stock wheels with 47mm in front and 45mm rear gravel tyres. The tyre clearance is generous enough. I will add a suspension dropper seatpost for more comfort. At the moment, a shock stop suspension stem is not needed. The stock bar tape and flared alloy handle bars and surprisingly comfortable 😁.

The perfect gravel bike
19 August 2023

When I decided to buy a new bike. I decided on a gravel bike. After reviewing many articles and videos, I decided on the CANNONDALE TOPSTONE CARBON 3L bike. The manufacturer recommended a Medium frame based on my height of 6'0, although their size chart said that I could use a medium, large or an extra large frame. I choose an XL frame. In retrospect, a large frame would have been the best size for me at 6' tall, 210# and a 32" inseam. I would have liked to seen, rode and be properly fitted for this bike, but my closest stocking dealership was 3.5 hours away. I opted for the home delivery. While to bike was almost fully installed, I had to do modifications for a perfect fit. My legs are fully extended at the bottom of the stroke and my arms are comfortable riding on the hoods, shifters or the handlebar. While riding the bike the front spindle is directly underneath the handlebar. Do download the CANNONDALE app. I installed a computer on the stem , two bottle cages and a seat post bag. The Smart Sense lights are great. I keep them on strobe mode. Do order pedals as they are not included. In conclusion, this is a very easy bike to ride and it is very nimble.
