Like: USB C, no power adapter needed.Dislike: not all of the glass area is captured, absolutely dumb stand for upright orientation.I use this scanner weekly or more often. It is supported in Linux as a PC hosted scanner (EndeavorOS Artemis), no known way in Linux to configure the buttons on the scanner itself. Some tutorials hint it is possible to configure buttons in Linux.Decent for the price, if you accept the capture limitations. But, why offer glass which is not scanned? Document headers/footers get chopped up by this.

Doesn't work with MacOS 13 (Ventura)

So many reviews about whether it works on a Mac, and so few of them indicate which OS version they're using. It works with my Macbook Pro that is still running MacOS 12 (Monterey), but won't connect on my iMac running MacOS 13 (Ventura). The Canon software doesn't work on either, but on Monterey the native Apple software (Image Capture and Preview) work fine.I spent a long time with Canon tech support chat and got nowhere. (Well, they did have me reset the print system, which fixed the issue I was having with my 12 year old Epson scanner but didn't fix the Canon problem.) Their website says it's compatible with Ventura, but it pretty clearly is not.

So why a Canon LiDE 400?Simply, I wanted a second scanner for everyday scanning but more importantly for quick easy scanning of the many totes of photos from my film days. I still use the 9950f for special, more professional scanning of certain photos and/or negatives; sometimes with SilverFast ai Studio, sometimes not as it came with very good scanner profiles. Now, about the LiDE 400. First off, it's $90. It's not top of the line or a professional scanner. It should never be reviewed as such.Having said that, the LiDE 400 scans photos at pretty much equal quality to the 9950f. First off, it's $90. It's not top of the line or a professional scanner. It should never be reviewed as such.Having said that, the LiDE 400 scans photos at pretty much equal quality to the 9950f. Notice I said photos, meaning prints which is reflective scanning. There are really 2 things important to the general quality of a scan; resolution and dmax (optical density value). You definitely want more resolution. The more resolution, the more pixels which allows not only for sizing flexibility but for more reproducible detail. At 4800 x 4800, the LiDE 400 has more than adequate resolution for any of your needs with this type of scanner.Dmax, the optical density determines the ability to capture shades of grey (camera sensors see grey too). The number of shades of grey and the smoothness of the gradation determines the dynamic range and fine detail. This becomes more crucial if your doing transmissive scanning (slides or negatives). For prints, the native density of a photographic print is around 2.0. By contrast negatives are around 3.5 - 4.0. If a scanner lists a Dmax value in its specs it is for transmissive scanning. Most, if not all, reflective scanners will have a Dmax of at least 2.5 which when applied to prints is more than sufficient. From a purely equipment stand point, the LiDE 400 is entirely capable of providing a very good photo print scan. However, the software / driver are other factors.Anyone previously using a Canon scanner will be familiar with the driver. I have found it (on the 9950f) to be very easy to use and powerful enough (in advanced mode) to accommodate most scans for whatever purposes. It is pretty much the same now. They've made some changes mostly in the cosmetics of the interface but it functions the same, which is good. You can enable 48 bit scanning (a must for after scan editing), determine color management (profile use), and image manipulation (levels, curves, etc) based on the color management scheme. What is new is the IJScan utility. This is the launch pad for all scanning unless you are scanning directly from an application like PS or Word etc. Here you select what scan you need from PDF to Photo to ScanGear (driver access) but what is really good, it is here that you determine through the settings the parameters of each type of scan. This includes the location to download image, the file format, and any application you want to associate (like Lightroom for example). What is also good for me, is the ability to launch the ScanGear driver from the utility and work in advanced mode. This was not available in the older application. Also you can perform a 48 bit scan from the utility through the driver without launching from a specific 3rd party application (like Photoshop). These 2 things were a perpetual issue for me. Not anymore. The last thing was installation. I have installed the utility, driver, and scanner on 2 Windows 10 systems. One is Win 10 Pro, the other Win 10 Home. Both are at OS Build 21H1. The installation went smoothly without issue and the systems easily recognized the scanner. The Canon LiDE 400 operates without issue and very efficiently. Also I might mention since it may be important to some; the scanner has a small footprint for a scanner. It is thin and light weight.Ok, it's not perfect, Right? No, but these are not issues of such magnitude to reduce my rating since 2 are documentation flaws.Firstly, the profile provided by Canon is good but seems to be a bit biased red and a bit over-saturated. Now, that is a very subjective point. I tend to scan and shoot more neutral. Canon and other companies generally boost things a bit with their cameras, scanners, and printers if allowed to use default color management. The 9950f did not but with the LiDE 400 I just scan without a profile in play.As to documentation... I don't have clue how I would scan a photo print in the vertical position. Maybe a letter size document would work. There is no documentation on this. Nor is there any reference to the photo stich function. I may experiment in the future but its not a priority.Hope this helps... Bottom line; read the headline. That says it all.

Good product, but doesn't play well with Windows 11
16 March 2023

So far I only have performed a few scans, works as advertised, output looks good, price is good, delivery quick. My negative comments stem from the issues getting the unit working with Windows 11. I spent a lot of hours searching the internet for solutions, mostly looking for the application IJ Scanning Utility. Oddly enough, I found the scanning utility on my C: drive in Program Files(x86), Canon, Scan Utility, IJ Scan Utility. In that directory a fair piece down the list, is the application SCANUTILITY. If you double click on that file name, a little window will pop up and you can control the scanner. Sadly I don't remember which driver download I installed that put the scanner utility in that directory as I only much later in my search for the app happened to discover it in the Canon directory. I would start with the driver CD that comes with the the scanner and download that driver and check to see if the scanning utility has shown up in Canon directory under Program files (x86).The Canon Website is irritating at best, it consistently stated that my system was a Win 10 version along with irritating help screens for using a inkjet printer even after I got the Lide 400 scanner entered as the device I was searching for help.A google search for IJ Scanning Utility gives you a few choices for downloading drivers that might contain the actual app SCANUTILITY.I don't hold B&H photo responsible for the trip into download hell, it is Canon's doing.

IJ Utility Scan inferior to CanoScan Toolbox 5.0
3 April 2023

We replaced a 600F with this 400. The scanner is more awkward to use, but acceptable. The IJ Scan Utility though is far inferior to the earlier CanoScan Toolbox 5.0. In the Toolbox all the settings I change regularly, mode, scan type and output file name are on one pop-up, not on a layer below. Also, I should have total control over the output file name. I should not have to remove date/sequence nbr every time I scan something. Both the hardware and software are a step backwards. If Canon had Windows 11 drivers for the 600F we would still be using a perfectly operating scanner and a well thought out interface.

LIDE 400 scanner, absolutely satisfied with the performance

After comparing the output from various options, I decided to do all my scanning work from Advanced Mode tab of ScanGear. I think I got the best scanned images (from photo papers) from this tab. My work was done diligently; first previewing, then adjusting the settings and then final scanning. I avoided making too large files.I have used it only for one month, which has served my purpose. I do not know the performance-life of the scanner. Scanning speed was not my requirement.

Not excited
1 November 2022

It works so far, but connection to computer is hit and miss. Either the port on the scanner or the provided specialty cable is iffy, so getting it to come on is a breath-holder, and I doubt getting a replacement cable is likely. Scans look fine, but when scanning multiple spaced-out photos at once, sometimes I get multiple individual scans (that's the goal), sometimes it turns all the photos into one single picture, and sometimes it only scans one or two of the group. My old Pixma printer/scanner was more reliable until it went toes up.

Perfect, 200+ photos scanned
19 November 2022

I'm using this to digitize old (some 90 years old) photos. Depending on size, I can scan up to 4 at a time. Using Image Capture on my Mac, it is simple to crop and rotate, and select a save to folder. 600 dpi seems to be adequate; good resolution, but reasonable file size. The scanner worked immediately after connecting to the computer. FYI, the 2 phone apps that I tried before purchasing the scanner didn't come close to providing a decent image. Lack of wireless connection isn't an issue since I want to correct an image before sending it to the cloud. Very glad that I didn't go with the more expensive options which I considered.

Solid scanner but one irritating quirk
4 June 2022

This is a solid scanner with good scan quality, though not much different than my LIDE 220 that's six years old. I bought this one because my Mac Studio wouldn't recognize the LIDE 220, and I wanted a scanner that used USB-C. This one does. However, it has one irritating quirk: it will regularly "wake up" and run for a few seconds. You can hear the scan head moving back and forth. This happens multiple times throughout my day when I'm not even using the computer it's connected to. It got to be so irritating I've now unplugged it and will only plug it back in when I need to use it. My old scanner never did this, so I'm not sure what's going on. But overall I'm happy with this scanner other than that one issue.
