Canon 50mm f/1.8 EF II

This lens is definitely the first lens that beginners in photography should buy. By using the lens manually, you can easily learn how the trio of ISO, Shutter speed and aperture work and get higher performance from your camera. You get much sharper photos than a kit lens and at a very, very affordable price. However, the lens is a bit noisy and very slow to focus, especially in low light.

A high-performance bargain

Light, unlike the zoom that came with the Canon kit I received as a gift. Which makes for an eminently serviceable machine on hikes, particularly ones that involve scrambles. Very sharp lens, which I expect to perform well with large (16x20 and greater) prints. We shall see. On the big Mac screen, the clarity is remarkable. The 1.8 is more than adequate for most low-light purposes. And at more than $200 less than the faster 1.4 (which could probably take good available light images of a black cat in a coal bin at night) , it makes the 1.8 a veritable bargain.

Extremely good value for the prime lens-curious

I'm an amateur who has been using zoom lenses for my Canon EOS T5i for awhile now, and wanted to try shooting with a prime lens, but new lenses are an expensive proposal... until now! This inexpensive 50mm lens was well worth the money I spent on it just for the experimentation. What's the attraction? This lens has a minimum F-stop of 1.8 (as opposed to 4.5 on my best zoom lens), which means a better contrast of foreground and background on my images, clean, crisp lines, and beautiful light even at night. I couldn't be happier with the images, I don't miss the zoom as much as I thought I would, and I am excited to look for even better fixed focal lenses. It does take some time to get used to the focal distance, which means you have to have more room between you and the subject (the standard kit lens for the T5i has a minimum 18mm FD), so not ideal for close quarters shooting, but that's the price you pay. But why didn't I give this lens five stars? For what it is, it's great, but it is by no means perfect. It's an EF lens and not an EFS lens, so it lacks image stabilization (which is okay in my opinion) making it best used with a good tripod. Not a big deal, but what is a big deal is the servo noise. Maybe it's because this is such a lightweight lens, but the auto-focus is the loudest I've ever heard on a camera. My tip: if you're shooting video, manually focus EVERYTHING or the mic will pick up the lens sound and little else. My last not-really-a-gripe gripe is that this lens has a 52mm case instead of the "standard" Canon EF 58mm, which means that if you've invested in filters they simply will not work with this lens, and you'll have to buy new ones, which add weight to a camera bag. In fairness, if you move from standard EF-EFS to another manufacturer's lens you will have to contend with this anyway, so it's not a big deal.

Gorgeous, excellent low light, and CHEAP! GET THIS LENS!

Among the cheap DSLR lenses (between the crappy kit lenses, and the super expensive ones) this is the best looking lens money can buy. The sharpness is exceptional. The shallow depth of field (1.8 aperture!) is absolutely gorgeous. If you're a DSLR filmmaker and you don't have this in your kit, what are you doing with your life? Seriously, I want to know. There is no reason not to have this lens. pros:cheap and freaking gorgeous. 1.8 aperture means the low light performance is top of the line for the cost. You can shoot at night and use practicals (lamps etc). Get this and the 24mm 2.8 prime lens and you don't ever need to buy more lenses. Cons: The focus ring is built in a way that's really annoying. Sharp, little to no barrel distortion, and minimal vignetting make it a great lens for street photography, though f/1.8 does exhibit a little lack of contrast and some gnarly chromatic aberration in the corners. That said, stop it down to f/2 and the majority of that goes away, giving you great pictures. That's one of the great benefits of a fast lens: the kit lenses are generally f/3.5 and slower, so stopping this down to f/2 still gives you a huge amount more light than you're used to, and that also means... BOKEH! Not the all-time bestest at it, it still has quite good bokeh. That makes it a perfect portrait lens, which is what I use it for- I have a 28mm to act as my 50. All in all, it's a great lens. Were it not, there wouldn't be a bazillion of them sold. For a cheap 50 mm with an aperture of 1.8 for under a hundred quid it doesn't get much better. At this price I doubt nothing comes close. It is nifty and it is 50 mm! It is made of plastic , the focus ring is not buttery smooth but the results better its very little price. For this alone the lens is worth having your in kit bag.. small versatile and no need for flash indoors unless its extremely dark. Focus a little slow on the canon 700D but still fast enough for most shooters. I personally prefer manual focus most of the time however the lens does nail the shot in auto spot focus mode. Continuous focus hunts a little but it is not painful. Let's not forget the images are sharp, ( not razor but certainly above average) but tend to soften around the extreme edges.
