Everybody knows about the nifty fifty! It's a wonderfully small prime lens that has a fast aperture for a cheap price. The STM variant does seems quite a bit better from the previous version. I have used this lens on my Canon T3, T5i, and now my R8. It works perfectly for portraits or if you need more light in darker situations. It is softer at f/1.8, but sharpens up around f/2.8, which is still perfectly usable. It's a little tight on crop though, but I felt it was was easier to use on full frame for more everyday situations. I'm mostly planning on switching to the RF 35mm, but the 50mm is still an invaluable tool to have in most photographer's and even videographer's bag.

I use this lens mostly for portraits in family events and as a walk around lens when I travel. I pair this lens either with my Canon M50 mk II or an older Canon 3000N film camera. It fits nice and snug when adapted to the M50 with zero compatibility issue. All auto focus functions of the camera works flawlessly. It also fits the older film camera even though it's a "newer" lens.However, the lens produces a soft images when used at its widest apperture (f/1.8). This is particularly noticeable in lowlight condition for digital images, (mostly) a non-issue for films.

Although this is not the latest Canon camera the EOS D5 mk IV remains a top choice for professional photographers. The range of lenses and accessories available for this camera are top range and will keep the system current for many more years. I would not recommend this camera for the occasional user There are many others in the Canon range for them. Technically a very capable camera but I will not go into depth and leave this for the reader to confirm from the many camera revues on line. My own experience so far has been positive and I am enjoying the learning process. I would suggest new owners spend as much time as possible learning all the capabilities of this camera before exploiting it's wide artistic merits. Keith Gerrard

Everybody knows about the nifty fifty! It's a wonderfully small prime lens that has a fast aperture for a cheap price. The STM variant does seems quite a bit better from the previous version. I have used this lens on my Canon T3, T5i, and now my R8. It works perfectly for portraits or if you need more light in darker situations. It is softer at f/1.8, but sharpens up around f/2.8, which is still perfectly usable. My main focus is sports photography, so I was hoping to find a cheap lens that would perform good in low-light situations so that I could take decent photos in gyms and/or outside when it is darker. I'm a nature and wildlife photographer but got asked to take my grandson's high school graduation photos. Although I have 4 lenses, not one of them would be good for portraits. Since this may be the only time I ever have a need for this type of lens I decided to go cheap. I think I made the right decision. I've read that some of these are noisy when focusing. My lens is pretty quiet and the focus isn't that slow even indoors, the only place I've tested it. I just tried a few random shots from my couch hand held and at AV 1.8 and ISO 200. If you have the Canon EPS Rebel T7 camera, then you need this lens. It has been a game changer for my photography business. The only downside, which isn’t much of one, is that YOU are the zoom for this lens meaning that if you need to get closer you must physically get closer to your subject. Same method for if you need to be farther away. This is because this lens has the ability to have super low aperture which helps create that beautiful bokeh effect that everyone wants, while also maintaining a super crisp clear photograph. Once you get used to that, using this lens is a breeze. I don’t regret purchasing this at all!
This lens replaces a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II that I word out. The latter's plastic helicoil wore to the point that the lens was flopping around in it's mount, leading to some disconcerting focus shifts across the image.The current lens, with it's upgraded diaphragm, metal mount, and better coatings will hopefully have a more sturdy helicoil! Time will tell.This is my favorite lens. It's light, very sharp at f/4.0 and below, and f/1.8 in low light is a real advantage over slower zooms. Although my Sigma Art f/1.4 50mm lens is far sharper wide open than the Nifty Fifty,it's 8 times more expensive and 5 time as heavy. And to see that sharpness, I need to use my Canon 5Dsr with it's 50 megapixel sensor, on a tripod or very fast shutter speed. On my 6D, both lenses ...
