Good fast lense for the price. Was able to get some nice boka. This lense on a crop sensor camera is more equivalant to a 70mm so if you are shooting with a crop sensor body and need wider coverage you will have to be further back for group shots or landscape photography or usr a smaller focal length lense. You won't have this issue if you sre shooting with a full framed body because it will have the focal length of a 50mm. This lense on a crop but works grest as a lower cost portrait lense where on a full frame camera this is a good fast general purpose lense for the money.

The Canon 'Nifty Fifty" has been around for a while. You can't beat prime lenses as value for money and this one is no exception. At f/1.8 it is significantly brighter than Canon's kit zooms. It is compact and lightweight with good sharpness. 50mm focal length lends itself to many uses, from landscapes (provided you don't want to go very wide) to group shots and portraits. Closest focus distance is about 1 foot. There is no image stabilisation but I haven't missed it. Another nice thing is that it has been around for a long time, so even going back to Photoshop CC2014, correction data is included. This lense is a good match to any Canon DSLR, full frame or APS-C

The optics are said to be very similar, but with the new lens there is a clear improvement in centre sharpness at f/1.8. Focusing is also faster, smoother and quieter thanks to the Stepper Motor (STM). Incidentally, the STM provides much-improved video focus tracking. The focus is smooth, quiet and most important accurate and although not quite as rapid as the USM focus mechanism, still more than adequate and impressive for a lens of this budget. The bokeh on this new version is also lovely and circular, thanks to an additional 2 aperture blades compared to the previous version. It does suffer from a little CA and fringing in areas of high contrast (backlit detail near the edges of frame for example) but even my L glass exhibits this and with Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4 software (or the appropriate lens profile uploaded to the camera), this can be well controlled. I've seen good reviews of the cheaper, Chinese brands that compare with this lens and I'm sure they can produce good results. But for me, I prefer to stick to a brand I know and trust, and generally I've been happy with Canon lenses and did not want to diverge from the brand. I'm glad I didn't as this new version of an already great value lens ticks all the boxes, and for me, solves all the shortcomings of the previous MKII version. With the exception of focus speed, I also think the STM focus drive has almost all of the advantages of the USM mechanism, hence why I didn't consider the more-than-twice-the-price 1.4 50mm USM from Canon, which seems to get mixed reviews. The focus ring on this lens is fully electronic, which means there is absolutely no mechanical connection between the focus ring and the focus drive mechanism. Instead, the ring sends a proportional focus control signal to the camera body, which then in turn proportionally drives the auto focus gear in accordance with the ring movement. This makes the focus ring beautifully smooth, seamless and continuous, and also means it can be complete disabled in the camera software (assuming your body supports turning off manual focus override) which means you cannot bump the focus whilst handling the lens during shooting. If like me, you want a lens to take beautiful portraits with, I can only sing this lens's praises. As the cheapest lens I own, it also now ranks as one of my favourites and it's very easy to forget how inexpensive this lens is, when you see the quality of images it can produce!

The fixed 50mm focal length is great for getting you to move around and work your shots until you find that perfect angle rather than relying on zooming in or out. The 1.8f aperture is great for evening/low light shots and you can get some awesome boka and blur effects with it as well. The Autofocus works fine, but for some reason I can't seem to focus at all on manual. Thats probably just me but I was pretty good at using manual on my other lenses, might just have to practice more with this one. I've held on to a 1.4 for years, have stubbornly attempted to have it repaired for a few years a time or two and it has never been a lens I could truly depend on. It was just too erratic and soft. I shoot a ton of theatre and I need a fast 50mm lens. I had pretty much given up on it and finally, for some reason I figured why not roll the dice on that cheap little nifty fifty.So I finally got it and yeah, all the hype is real. It's a fantastic, dependable fast lens. I recently shot a show, super dark with very saturated colors and follow spots. It's definitely a go to lens for me now. It's a hell of a bargain. I strongly recommend it.
Just got this for Christmas to increase my lens inventory and I have no idea why I went this long without it.If you ever need a lens for portrait shots, this is an excellent one to have in your bag.The ability to control the focal length and to easily achieve the Bokeh effect of crucial when you want that subject to be sharp.The price can't be beat for what you are gettinng.The quality build is good. The mount is metal.Under $200 for what this can do? Yes please.Ease of use is subjective given what the lens offers and it is a fixed focal length, but it allows me to focus precisely what I want.
I wanted a reasonably priced wide-angle lens for family group photos. It appears to be about what I needed. I use a Canon T6 as a good point and shoot camera with auto focus. Strictly amateur abilities. This lens is wide angle with background details clearly copied. The kit lens which came with the camera is ok, but is too narrow for group shots closeup. Haven't used the lens much but have taken random pics of neighborhood homes and it appears to be worth the money. An entry level camera does not need an expensive lens. Happy with the purchase. B&H is the go to place for photo equipment, as far as I am concerned.
