The images are very sharp even wide open at f/2.8, comparable to quality prime lenses stopped down to f/2.8. There is one better lens than this lens which is Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L USM IS Macro Lens. I have used that lens and ended up selling that lens to go back to this lens. Here are my reasons. Image quality wise, they are so comparable. There really isn't much to improve upon the image quality ofUSM non-L version. L is better but so marginally that image quality isn't a good reason for upgrade. Two biggest reason for upgrade is weather sealing/build quality and image stabilization. I didn't need either of those. I don't shoot macro shots in the rain or snow. USM version build quality is more than good enough. As for image stabilization, it's great for non-macro low light situations. I found it still difficult to hand hold even with image stabilization for critical macro shots under less than ideal light. You still want to use a tripod even with image stabilization for sharpest reliable results. (Perhaps I just have too unstable hands ...) I also found that I don't really need image stabilization under normal situations to get sharp images using 100mm f/2.8 handheld especially with modern cameras. Now there are other reasons, perhaps more important reasons for the L version than the two mentioned. It looks very nice. It's much more attractive looking lens than the USM version. Also, since it a "L" lens with the red ring, you can take pride in the fact that you are shooting with the very best that Canon is offering. Peace of mind with no other macro lens to upgrade to on an EF mount. (Until you "need" to get the RF version...) Well, there you have it. Since none of the reasons really attractive me to the L, I got rid of it and got 135mm f2 L USM and 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro instead. I had to go to YouTube University to get insight into how to do macro photography. I tried making macro photographs in the bright Arizona sun but they didn’t turn out, even at f16. The depth of field is so ridiculously shallow that you need to be f22 or smaller in order to realize the awesome potential in this lens. Of course, even in bright sun this means a flash is necessary.This is a great learning experience and I strongly recommend it.

I was on the fence about getting this lens for the past couple of years. I finally decided to purchase it for use with my R6 via a Canon EF/RF adapter. It is definitely as tack sharp as many other reviewers point out. I tried it out on a few small flowers and bugs, and it performed flawlessly. I also did a few portraits, and the bokeh was probably one of the best I've seen.I also tested it out on my older Canon 7dmk2, and it performed equally amazing!If you are on the fence about getting this lens like I was, go for it!
I used to own the original non L version and I was very happy with it on my 5D II and 6D. But then sold it as I lost interest in photography. I am back now with a R5 and a RF 85 f1.2.Now I am slowly buying lenses again, and this EF 100 Macro tempted me due to it's price and I already have the Canon EF to RF adapter that I use 9n my EF 50 f1.4 and EF 16-35 F4 L without any issue.Upon inspecting the 100 macro lens, I see a dust spec under the front element, but I just tried to ignore it. 5 minutes after mounting this pens to my R5, the camera froze up, even turning the on/off switch didn't do a thing. I had to pull the battery out.This might be a one off, or will be a nightmare and I don't have time to deal with this issue, so I am returning the lens. The same with lenses, this again by far is in my TOP choice of lenses.It's extremely versatile, incredible optics, my Proof, my clients who rewarded me with plenty of $$$$ for their happiness. What's there not to like about Canon's 100mm 2.8 macro? 100mm gives you terrific focal length compression, which allows F2.8 to squash background and foreground details that can distract from the subject. Macro capability allows for endless creativity for composing images, and the autofocus through the lens is quick and precise. My rental arrived in beautiful /respected condition- therefore, I make to sure to send back as such. Thanks, Lensrental.
This lens is my favorite in my kit. I've owned it for a couple years before writing this and I was fortunate to get it before it went up in price. I'm not too technical when it comes to rating lenses but this does everything you expect without much effort. I love taking pictures of bugs and they turn out great with this. Ive used it mostly with my 80D which makes the zoom factor slightly larger with the 1.6 sensor. Pictures turn out great with that setup. It also works well for portraits with the wide aperture.Lately it's been working well with the EF to RF adaptor for my newer EOS R mirroless. I'm still testing everything with this setup but so far so good, which is great for anyone who is transitioning to Mirroless.
