On top of the macro capabilities this lens can serve as an interesting portrait lens with its spherical aberration control (similar to a Nikon's defocus control), however it's not something that I personally use much.The only downside that I've experienced with this lens throughout the three months that I've owned it occurred when I was testing autofocus with macro shots. Though its focusing is actually a bit easier and more quiet than a lot of other lenses when taking further distance shots, it definitely struggles when trying to find and hold a subject that's fairly close to the lens. For me that's not really an issue as I will just pull the focus almost as inwards as possible and then slightly shift myself, leaning in and out, in order to find the perfect focus.All-in-all, it's easily worth it if you have an interest in macro photography. The only reason why I'm rating this a 4/5 is because 9/10 isn't an option.

While I initially used an EF-RF adapter and was completely satisfied using 'old' glass on the new bodies I have found that pairing RF lenses with RF bodies takes every aspect of the photography experience up, out, and beyond expectation. That, and obviously its somewhat limited use do to being a 100mm (ie you will have a hard time shooting larger subjects in confined spaces). I also thought that SA control would be neat, but I found out I really have no need for it. For the bulk of my day-to-day macro work, I typically use the Laowa 100m 2:1 macro adapted to my R7 for stills of insects and other invertebrates. However, the Laowa lacks any image stabilization. I looked to the RF 100mm to fill this void, specifically for video use. I knew it would take me time to get used to a new lens, since they all have their own idiosyncrasies. However the responsiveness of the manual focus on the RF 100mm is something hard to adjust to. The focus settings in the camera offer only 2 settings, rotation speed & rotation angle, both of which I have qualms with. Rotation angle is the logical approach, but it requires an exorbitant amount of throw to even get from 1:1 to 1:4, let alone the full range. Insect photography is very unforgiving.. you have a small window of time with certain subjects, and the longer it takes fumbling around with the focus, the more likely you will miss your shot. There's no room for these hurdles, the more shots I miss because of focusing delay, the more it stay in the bag, it's that simple. Autofocus is usually where most lenses face scrutiny, but in the world of macrophotography, manual focus is crucial. Sure, it's cool that you can change the focus direction and rotation acceleration with focus-by-wire, but it's not a good sacrifice for janky responsiveness and the input lag along with this design. It's hair-pulling, and I don't recommend it, especially to a professional or hardcore enthusiasts. Implementing settings variables in the RF bodies to make these features work better/customizable could be a viable reprieve, but until then I'm sticking with the Laowa (for stills at least). Another downside is that I must view the screen/EVF to see the magnification, rather than simply looking at the increments on the lens barrel and turning to the desired number. I instinctively know what magnification I need per subject and quickly glance and adjust on the fly while keeping my eye on the subject before attempting a photo.. can't do that with the RF 100. I'll also echo the negative sentiment toward the SA control; it's pointless, undesirable, and a waste of engineering. It also ruined some of my early photos before realizing this was even a feature.The lens has some pros though, the image stabilization is great and makes videos far less shaky, especially at higher magnifications. It offers .4x more magnification than most 100mm macros on the market, that's a plus. It's quite sharp too, maybe a hair less sharp than the Laowa at ~f/13, but still quite good. Despite manual focus being an issue, it's very smooth. It's also quite light, which is useful for taking photos with one hand, and posing the subject with the other. Focus breathing is a tad less than the Laowa as well.

But while I could have saved some money by going that route, nothing else came close to giving me this much value and creature comforts. It's this lens or 20yo glass designs or full manual. In fact I Tried the 85mm f2 rf lens by Canon for $500 and while I enjoyed that lens it just didn't do enough things great enough to justify it's price. It's my first L glass and boy o boy is it luxurious. Very well made and internal focusing is something I had read about but never had. It's just next level where you don't feel worried about it getting bumped around in your bag when the exterior is fixed and rigid. Aside from some focus shift at max magnification there isn't anything else to ask for from this lens. GET IT, even though it's a 100mm prime lens that you really can only use outside or for macro photos. You won't regret it.
I read and watched many videos prior to purchasing this lens. People have said that it would not focus correctly on eyes due to focus shift. What's strange is, despite Canon saying this lens has focus shift, I have not experienced it beyond f2.8, despite my pixel peeping. This could be because I updated the firmware? Completely worthless* A little plasticky feeling* ... MoreI read and watched many videos prior to purchasing this lens. People have said that it would not focus correctly on eyes due to focus shift. What's strange is, despite Canon saying this lens has focus shift, I have not experienced it beyond f2.8, despite my pixel peeping. This could be because I updated the firmware? No idea, but it's not a problem for me.Pros:* A relatively fast aperture macro lens* Good portrait lens* VERY sharp, like razor sharp clear down to f2.8* Auto-Focus is zippin'* Stabilizer works better than the EF version's didCons:*A little bit bigger than I'd like it to be* SA control ring seems like a design flaw, possibly leading to the focus issues some have complained about? If you JUST want a macro lens, maybe look at the Venus optics lenses first, (mucho cheaper), as this one is a little pricey for someone who wants to do just bugs and such. Those lenses are VERY sharp too, and you can get more magnification.

Turning SA to +2 enlarged the subject without moving the lens closer (Photo 5). SA -2 made the subject smaller without moving the lens farther away.I used the lens with a Canon R5. Later I looked at the metadata for the JPEG and CR3 files, but didn't see any indication of the SA setting. I'm not sure if the SA setting is stored in the metadata, or what software would be needed to view it. Pressing the INFO button on a Canon R5 displays a great deal of data about an image, but SA setting does not appear. If you want to keep track of your SA settings, you may need to write it down.
Bought this lens get into some Macro photography and am I delighted with the results I've achieved so far. I've only had the lens for about a month but have taken some incredible photos with it already. This lens is everything and more it was billed to be the price point is great as well.B&H staff were awesome to work with and suggesting everything I'd need to get into macro work. The lens has already been out in a good rain to capture some shots of Tulips as I was on a day trip to a garden with over 4 million Tulips and wasn't going to pass the opportunity to get some stunning photos weather sealing held perfectly on my lens and R5. If you're looking at this lens I'd recommend it to family. I have been utterly disappointed with this lens. Let me get the minor issue out first: the SA control ring gets in the way and I have to keep it locked so that I don't grab it when I am using manual focus ring. Personally, I think that SA-modified photos just look wrong and the whole shebang is a gimmick. I don't have any use for the SA ring.Now, to the main issue. The lens has focusing issues across the entire focusing range. I have to manually refocus it before autofocus can lock. This has been happening every time I've used this lens. Bringing it to an actual event like a wedding is out of question for me because I will be missing shots.I used Canon warranty and sent the lens for repairs. But the biggest annoyance is that RAW file metadata of pictures I take with this lens only identify the lens used with the number 279 in the EXIF data instead of Canon RF 100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM as all my other lenses do (with their respective identifiers). I instead have to search my lens data base and manually select the appropriate profile to correct lens distortions. Not only is this time-consuming, it prevents the use of other software that reads the EXIF data to determine the lens profile to use (i.e., DxO PureRaw).
