Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM II Lens
Canon zoom lens EF 24-70mm F2.8 L II USM This lens replaces the previous high quality L-series 28-70mm f/2.8 lens, with a lens of even greater caliber. The range has been extended to cover an ultra-wide angle of 24mm, which makes it ideal for digital as well as film shooters, and the optics are even better than before with two Aspherical elements and a totally new UD glass element. It's now sealed and gasketed against dust and moisture, and a new processing unit makes the AF faster than ever. Internal Focusing The internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary and to easily accommodate specialty filters, such as polarizing filters. Two Aspherical Elements A lens design incorporating elements ground so the curve of the surface does not describe an arc of a circle. Especially useful in reducing distortion in wide angle lenses. UD Element UD glass is one of the new technologies to open new possibilities to develop the zoom lenses with low weight and high optical performance. UD elements make it possible to correct chromatic aberrations whilst maintaining low weight.

I believe that there are many excellent copies of this lens available, but quite a few copies have what is called a "haze" problem (suggesting that the inner elements can simply be cleaned). I bought such a lens on eBay and found that the haze issue is a very serious problem. The problem is often due to glue deterioration within a doublet lens in the 4th (innermost) group. The doublet lens consists of two pieces of glass (known as a flint and a crown) that are glued together face to face. The doublet is sealed in a plastic housing. The entire unit has the serial number CY1-2532. None of these units seem to be available anywhere on the planet. I repaired mine by disassembling the plastic unit with a small woodcarver's chisel. Once I removed the doublet I soaked it in Methylene Chloride for at least 30(!) days. Be careful this is a volatile and dangerous chemical. I then carefully split the doublet apart with my fingernail (the glass can easily crack at any point during this process). I then cleaned the surfaces with more Methylene Chloride and alcohol. I glued the doublet back together with Norland 61 optical adhesive. Properly aligning the two halves of the double is difficult (without special equipment) especially since the flint and crown have different diameters. After the lens is re-assembled it still needs to be aligned (which is a whole other matter). Ultimately the only expense of this repair was the cost of the chemicals, adhesive, a chisel, and a UV light -- but the repair is very time-consuming and a lot can go wrong. In 2020 Midwest Camera Repair gave me a quote of $425 to do the complete repair (using a baking process rather than using chemical solvents) and included aligning the lens.

Customer service is amazing. I received my package on time & checked out the lens I received & I mistakenly noticed a “scratch” on the lens…yea it was not. In fact customer service was super sweet & reminded me about the UV filter & to double check that & if I still had issue they were happy to help me further but thankfully it was exactly that! This lens was amazing to use for a wedding I was hired to photograph as well as some headshots. Definitely will be using this company in the future for my lens needs because its nice to be able to still use very nice/expensive lens without having to drop $1200+. Also, use your lens as much as you can for your rental time! The time goes by quick & I extended my time because I loved using it so much & was able to book another ... This is my second L-series lens, the other being a 70-200mm. For my shooting (mostly landscape and group people shots), this focal length range is preferred. It is heavy: for me that means substantially built and a big glass. Low light shooting and sun flare has been so much better than my kit 18-150mm lens. I have it mounted on an R7 via the EOS-RF adapter. Focus has been fast, silent and accurate. My skill level is best described as 'enthusiast' and 'hobbyist'.

This business goes above and beyond. I am really young, still in college, learning about gear, and don’t have the money to own a lot of my own equipment. Not only has lens rentals been such an amazing resource for my creative outlet, but it’s also helped me build my knowledge and experience on using different cameras. I get so excited to be hired for a project because I’ll come straight to lens rentals and look for a new camera or a new lens to try out. But they just don’t stop there. The customer care is absolutely unbelievable. When I’ve interacted with employees on the phone or over email, I can just tell that they love their job. They are so kind and understanding. The customer care is absolutely unbelievable. When I’ve interacted with employees on the phone or over email, I can just tell that they love their job. They are so kind and understanding. I forgot to send some gear back the other day and I messaged them as soon as I realized it—immediately I received such a kind email telling me that I didn’t need to worry and that they understand everyone makes mistakes. What that employee didn’t know, was that my car had just broken down and I found out my transmission needed to be replaced, I had just started back at my third job, and I’m a full time student. What may have seemed like a simple routine email to them, was such a gracious interaction for me to experience. I have felt so blessed to be introduced to Lens Rentals.Ps- I LOVE the tape that we get to send our packages back in. It genuinely makes me laugh every time.
I rented this lens for two shoots. The first shoot, an engagement session, it worked without a hitch. The second was for a wedding.Part way through the day, the ceremony, it out of the blue, brought up a connection issue. The lens had not left my camera since the first shoot, a few days before. I thought perhaps, it could be an issue with my camera. My second and I switched camera bodies, but the issue persisted. Unfortunately, I had to retire the lens for the rest of the day, which was exceedingly frustrating because I had rented with the main purpose of using it for the wedding.
This was the first lens I bought with my first professional body (canon 5d mkiii)I still own this lens 10+ years later. The auto focus is so sharp and silent, the zoom ring is smooth and looks great on all focal lengths. In post editing; I’m still impressed how often this lens hits its target. The lens itself is light, yet it’s incredibly sturdy. It’s great to take out on a day out to give you the flexibility various focal lengths without needing multiple lenses. I also have an SLR (Canon Eos1) & this lens loves to live on there. An absolute staple item for your collection
With my Canon R5, I compared photos taken with the new RF 24-70 2.8 L to the EF 24-70 2.8 L II lens. With the R5 the difference in these lenses is quite small. The in body R5 stabilization is excellent with the older EF lens and for me the RF lens based stabilization did not support slower hand held shutter speeds. This may be different for you. Both lenses were very sharp and comparable in the corners. The RF lens does allow you to get a bit closer to the subject, but for me this is not that important. If you are using a non stabilized RF body ( original R or RP ) I would recommended buying the new RF lens as the built in stabilization is very handy. If you have an in body stabilized R3, R5, R6 or R7, you might be better off buying an excellent condition used EF ... Both the EF and RF lenses are impressively good. In closing, if you have a stabilized body and own the EF 2.8 24-70mm II lens, I would find it hard to justify an upgrade.
All I can say is WOW. The lens was great, as always but the upgrade you guys pulled off is amazing. Particularly with the packaging. The hard case that came with the gear I rented was perfect…what a great idea. Serious thought has gone into how it all works together for us in the trenches trying to get the work done. When I can rely on a camera equipment rental company that’s this good, it's huge. Thank you for raising the bar for quality. I can’t wait until I can rent from you again!
The star attraction to this L series (Luxury) Canon lens is photo detail clarity which is amazing! This 24-70mm is an EF lens series meant for full frame bodies. I am using it on a cropped frame Canon EFS series so that gives me an effective 38-112mm lens which works great. The automatic focus is fast and nimble, and the barrel action is tight giving testimony to high quality seals. The deal breaker for some is the lack of IS or image stabilization. If you have shaky hands, consider a different lens with the IS feature. It may also be a good lens for fast action shots using a higher ISO and shutter speed. I only use this lens on a tripod to photograph artifacts and for that purpose, I could not find a better lens. The clarity with which I can zoom in to pick up ... 'I was quite disappointed when my original Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM croaked unexpectedly. And although it took me a couple of years to really appreciate this lens, it has since become my favorite go to lens especially when I do test photoshoots requiring multiple focal lengths for differing perspectives - 24mm, 35mm, 50mm & 70mm. So when it croaked - I was sad, I took a deep breathe, I jumped onto my bookmarked B&H Photo website & ordered my new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM.Within two days (all the way out here in California), I had my new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens. I put it through its paces on my 5D Mark IV & was immediately grinning from ear to ear. As the sun was setting quite fast, my initial shots were in low light. I was impressed w/how quickly & accurately the auto focus performed. I was also pleasantly surprised w/ the sharpness of these impromptu shots. The next morning I did a quick walkabout around the neighborhood & took a few random shots. As anticipated, the auto focus performed efficiently & very well in daylight.Upon returning home, I wrote some notes down in my photography journal. I commented on how solid the build was yet discretely lighter than my old 24-70mm lens. I also noticed the new lens was slightly less than half an inch shorter. The biggest thing I was impressed with was the standard zoom out direction from 24mm to 70mm - my old lens zoom out direction was reversed from 70mm to 24mm. And although the filter size is 82mm (instead of the usual 77mm), I am convinced the larger optics lends itself to its excellent performance.I have already done several test photoshoots up & down Hwy 111 of several vintage iconic signs & buildings. I have only uploaded them onto my external hard drive hopper for review. However, my initial cursory reaction was - WoW! I can't wait to get hopping when it starts warming up!So, my overall impression of the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens so far - although I am still grieving over the loss of my old lens, I know this new lens will be my new fav field lens for test shots. In fact, maybe I will steam line my process & eliminate the step to do final shots w/my prime lenses! Thanks B&H for yet another excellent shopping experience!
