Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Standard Zoom Lens
Canon zoom lens EF 24-70mm F2.8 L II USM This lens replaces the previous high quality L-series 28-70mm f/2.8 lens, with a lens of even greater caliber. The range has been extended to cover an ultra-wide angle of 24mm, which makes it ideal for digital as well as film shooters, and the optics are even better than before with two Aspherical elements and a totally new UD glass element. It's now sealed and gasketed against dust and moisture, and a new processing unit makes the AF faster than ever. Internal Focusing The internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary and to easily accommodate specialty filters, such as polarizing filters. Two Aspherical Elements A lens design incorporating elements ground so the curve of the surface does not describe an arc of a circle. Especially useful in reducing distortion in wide angle lenses. UD Element UD glass is one of the new technologies to open new possibilities to develop the zoom lenses with low weight and high optical performance. UD elements make it possible to correct chromatic aberrations whilst maintaining low weight.

I am so excited that I decided to purchase this new version. I've had an older version for quite some time that has been soft, despite being calibrated. I've had it only for a couple of weeks, but so far am super happy with the results. My primary use is in my studio with strobes because my space is small. I love the flexibility of being able to zoom in and out and to be able to rely on nearly 100% in focus shots makes my job easier!I also use it for family photo sessions! I have a session this weekend that I'm super excited to do with this lens and will be able to find the sweet spot. Again, the flexibility that it affords is perfect when I want to carry just one lens!

I bought this lens for it's useful focal length range and its constant 2.8 maximum aperture. It is my daily carry lens, and suits a range of uses. I use it on a Canon 90D which has a crop sensor, so the focal lengths I get are 38mm-112mm. Decent for landscapes, street photography, and portraits, and the Boca is nice. This will likely remain my primary lens, followed by the Canon 70-200mm. The locking feature on the lens that prevents it from 'zooming' while carrying it in the downward direction is a nice feature. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the Canon 70-200mm lens has built-in image stabilization, whereas this lens does not. For the price, that's unfortunate. Overall though, I think it is a solid lens choice and a good buy if you're serious ... MoreI bought this lens for it's useful focal length range and its constant 2.8 maximum aperture. My original first gen version of this lens finally crashed and burned. I had to have the 24-70 in my kit so I purchased the last gen made og this lens in EF mount. I await the next 1-Series release before moving to RF sooooo. This lens is fast and focus is tack sharp. Caveat- can not interchange the lens cap nor the lens hood from prior version - bummer!

I have been a professional photographer for 25 years. This quickly became my go to lens for events and some portraits. I bought several of the version 2 lenses that are still the current model. I broke them all in the course of my business. Never dropped, just broke. I have worn out a couple of these and had one stolen, but this is a solid work horse. A bit heavier, possibly a fraction slower in focus. But these are built better, last longer, have as good quality glass and is my preference. Hope this helps.
I have a way of telling myself nothing new unless I use everything I old. I have an canon 70D, 6D, & also a 7D. I love all of them. I had. Them for some years now & haven't upgraded. Honestly stop being serious about it. But I tried to video my son basketball game & the lights was terrible. Hopefully it' helps so far I have gave it a test run & I love it. Of course the pictures are more sharp for me
I have both the first generation of this lens and also the 2nd (this one.) IMO, optics on both are ok but not great. My biggest issue is the degree of distortion at the wider focal lengths, consequently I avoid going too wide with this lens. With the first generation lens my other issue is the design of the lens shade. It constantly falls off and goes flying. That said, it is sturdily built and hasn't broken yet. But I do question the build quality of the 2nd generation lens and I wonder what has been sacrificed to make this one lighter. Both rubber rings stretched and eventually fell off. When I brought the lens in to my local repair facility they said oh yeah, this happens all the time so we bought a giant shipment of the rings to keep in house. This has never been a problem with my other lens. It is a shoddy quality issue and I assume Canon is well aware at this point since this lens has been in circulation for quite a while. Fix the issue Canon! Also the lens shade is of low quality and broke rather quickly from normal use. Hey, these things happen, I get it. But if you're marketing a top of the line lens and selling it for almost $2,000, fix the issues!!!
I've been using my Generation I Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens for years as my primary lens for video production on a SONY FS-100 until some Bozo on set damaged the lens. The USM motor slowly shorted out over a five month until the lens ceased to work in some of the apertures and crapped out on Day 2 of a 10 day shoot. I overnighted the Generation 2 lens and the difference was noticeable. Not all change equates to improvement, but the changes in the new 24-70mm are a considerable improvement over the prior generation. The Generation 2 lens now works properly with the Metabones lens adapter and my smallHD monitor so I can take advantage of all the features that the Generation I lens could not support. Improved image quality is quite apparent. The Generation 2 lens now works properly with the Metabones lens adapter and my smallHD monitor so I can take advantage of all the features that the Generation I lens could not support. Improved image quality is quite apparent. Heads up if you upgrade from the first generation lens (77mm) to the newest generation (82mm) you will also need to upgrade to larger filters. But I guess that's just the cost of doing business. The only gripe I have is that I much prefer the larger first generation lens hood over the hood that comes with the newer lens. That's a minor caveat in light of everything else I gained with the newer version lens. If you're still using a Generation I 24-70mm f/2.8L series lens and are satisfied with it, it may not justify the cost of an upgrade. But if you try out the Generation II lens I'll bet you'll find the money somewhere in order to make the upgrade.
'I was quite disappointed when my original Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM croaked unexpectedly. And although it took me a couple of years to really appreciate this lens, it has since become my favorite go to lens especially when I do test photoshoots requiring multiple focal lengths for differing perspectives - 24mm, 35mm, 50mm & 70mm. So when it croaked - I was sad, I took a deep breathe, I jumped onto my bookmarked B&H Photo website & ordered my new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM.Within two days (all the way out here in California), I had my new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens. I put it through its paces on my 5D Mark IV & was immediately grinning from ear to ear. As the sun was setting quite fast, my initial shots were in low light. I was impressed w/how quickly & accurately the auto focus performed. I was also pleasantly surprised w/ the sharpness of these impromptu shots. The next morning I did a quick walkabout around the neighborhood & took a few random shots. As anticipated, the auto focus performed efficiently & very well in daylight.Upon returning home, I wrote some notes down in my photography journal. I commented on how solid the build was yet discretely lighter than my old 24-70mm lens. I also noticed the new lens was slightly less than half an inch shorter. The biggest thing I was impressed with was the standard zoom out direction from 24mm to 70mm - my old lens zoom out direction was reversed from 70mm to 24mm. And although the filter size is 82mm (instead of the usual 77mm), I am convinced the larger optics lends itself to its excellent performance.I have already done several test photoshoots up & down Hwy 111 of several vintage iconic signs & buildings. I have only uploaded them onto my external hard drive hopper for review. However, my initial cursory reaction was - WoW! I can't wait to get hopping when it starts warming up!So, my overall impression of the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens so far - although I am still grieving over the loss of my old lens, I know this new lens will be my new fav field lens for test shots. In fact, maybe I will steam line my process & eliminate the step to do final shots w/my prime lenses! Thanks B&H for yet another excellent shopping experience!
I purchased a Canon 90D with a 32.5 APC-S sensor, and while having the EF-S 18-135mm lens, which is good, it wasn't good enough. I struggled until I purchased the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens, and then the quality of my pictures went up big time. It is now my walk around lens. I also plan to purchase a full frame camera, but I only take photos, so mirrorless may not be where I go yet. Used DSLR maybe.
I have been frustrated using my Tamron 24-70 f2.8 (with image stabilization) and finally bit the bullet and upgraded to the Canon f2.8L 24-70 ii (without image stabilization.) The lack of stabilization along with the stellar reviews for Tamrons equivalent is what originally drew me away from purchasing the Canon. However, I have had nothing but issues with my Tamron - extreme backfocusing (despite sending it in to Tamron for calibration), soft focus, terrible AF when photographing moving subjects, etc. So I finally got over my concern about the lack of image stabilization and got the Canon ii. Wow! Its worlds different! First off, photos at every focal lengths are tack sharp. Wow! Its worlds different! First off, photos at every focal lengths are tack sharp. Being a perfectionist, this made my heart happy after dealing with soft focus images from my Tamron. Then I tested it out on moving subjects, and whereas my Tamron would give me nearly 75% of my images out of focus, the Canon gave me around 95% tack sharp images. Ive also hand held this Canon in some fairly low light situations, with slower shutter speeds, and I have yet to run into an issue with camera shake from the lack of image stabilization. I truly believe it is not a necessary feature on the lens of this focal length. I, however, I do appreciate it on my canon 70-200 f2.8L ii. As always, my order from B&H was smooth sailing, and I couldnt recommend them enough. They also had a fantastic deal that allowed me to get a 4 TB Western Digital Passport hard drive for free with the purchase of my lens which I loved. Usually lens kits come with 75-80% w/ things that you will never use. I am absolutely beyond thrilled with my purchase, and Im so happy to not deal with the stress of wondering if my images will turn out, like I did before. I shouldve purchased the Canon to begin with, but I thought with the savings of a few hundred dollars plus IS, that the better option was Tamron. I was wrong.
